Hello everyone. I finally decided to start a build thread. A lil' history on the car: I bought it off of Evil Bay in 2005. "All it needed was paint!"
I didn't have a plan and just wanted to drive and enjoy her.
I now have a plan... daily driver with some autocross and maybe a track day or two. I'm just tired of seeing her sit in the garage! All work will be/has been done in the garage.
It's going to be a budget build until I get the go-ahead from the wife. Right now we're going through infertility treatment and that can cost a lot more than building this car.
I want to get her done by this August for Hot August Nights and what was going to be the Camaro Performers event. I'm tired of spending the money and not having the car at HAN! :nopity:

Orignally I didn't think I was going to take the windows out. Therefore, I replaced the floor pan in two halves. This was going to be my first time welding sheetmetal with a mig. I figured it was going to be covered with carpet anyway. How hard could it be and it was a nice place to practice! Afterwards, I covered the entire thing with Por-15. I know it's only for rusted metal and there was still some in there, but what's a lil' added protection. Fatmat will be installed as well.

Yeah Ron it has been awhile. I just don't get around to posting very often. I figured it will help keep me motivated to get this done!

I took the motor and trans out so I could prep and paint the compartment. While this was going on, I also added a few goodies to the subframe and freshend her up a bit!
The LCA were powdercoated and delulum bushings installed. Hotchkis 2" lowering springs with swaybar. SPC adjustable UCA with Power Performance tall balljoints. Single adjustable Varishocks. I think that's about it. I've already installed the IROC box before the tear apart!

Oh yeah, the wife onboard comment... as you can see the wheels are Rushforth brushed superspoke with clear. 17x8 up front with Nitto 555 245/45/17. Not bad for a Christmas present this past year! :1st: :jawdrop:

Oh yeah, I forgot to post my rendering I had done by Shawn at Mascoll Designs. Great guy to work with. Also a lil' practice on my mailbox. The wife wasn't too sure about the color so what a better way to show her the true color! She's not too sure about me painting this thing in the garage. Isn't that what a home built (budget) car is?

Loving the color and rendering..if ya paint in garage just make sure if its a attached garage to keep the thing sealed up from house my buddy forgot his vent went inside house and it smelled for a week..lol

Randal, progress yes! I'm saving the hard stuff for last. That should begin in a couple of weeks. I'm replacing the quarters and maybe a lil homemade mini tub. I can't spend $400 right now for the DSE tubs. I just need an inch! lol... leave that one alone!

Darrin, no probs on the garage. That would suck though. I remember my wife complaining of the paint supplies my friend and I took to work smelling up her car! Working graveyards we had a lil' down time! That's where the mailbox was done. Then I brought it home and cleared it a few hours later.

So I was looking over the 7 acres the other day and found a pick up bed that was used as a trailer for dump runs. I decided to haul to more suitable ground and remove the rear end. After a cuople of hours, I found a 9 inch with 3.25 gears, 31 spline axles and posi... according to the tag info! My question to you is, do I use it? It is 61" from mounting flange to mounting flange. The camaro is 60"? correct? I have an 8.2 10 bolt peg leg with 3.08. If it was a 8.5, I would keep it and build it up. What's going to be a better route to go? Easier? Cheaper? I know I'll have to reweld some mounts and I believe the pinion is going to be a bit off center. How much is okay? Then again when I take the third member out, it might not even be worth it. It's been sitting for some time but nothing was locked up.

Robert, If you stop by, here is a pic of the firewall I was talking about. You can see the patch job right above the heater core area. My question was should I just seal the seam or use filler and semi smooth the area and seal the rest of the seam. I'm not building a show car. The patch job was filled and the rest of the seam had sealer on it. Thanks.

You might be able to skip the mini tub and just roll the fender lips. That should give you nearly an 3/4th's of an inch for your rear wheels. ANd how big do you plan on going in the back is the other question.

Also I don't know about the rear end. I have 8.2 in my camaro too. So basically, I just bought a rebuild kit with all new interns except the axle's and went from there. But I don't plan on launching mine on a drag strip much. Not really me. Now the question what will you be using yours for and how much can u get the axle for??? looks like your making good progress too.

Hey randall thanks for stopping by. My problem is with the inner wheel well area! I have a 1/2 inch of room... not enough. I'm sure there will be rubbing. I won't be launching mine from any drag strips either. Some autocrosses and maybe a track day or two a year. Mainly a daily driver. I want to see some heads turn! :twothumbs:

Well I've been working on the firewall for the last few weeks. It's only taken me about 24 hours actual time. Just been confused as to what exactly I want! I have to keep telling myself that I'm not building a piano! Here's what I started with after some grinding.

After some primer and some Eastwood Underhood Black, this is what I came up with. No sanding between coats... I'm not building a show car. And it looks a helluva lot better than when I started.

Then I was able to roll the subframe back in underneath. I feel so much better that I finally completed this part. Solid bushings installed as well!

The rear wheel is 17x10 orginally made for a 69. I won't run anything bigger than a 295 on it. 275 now. It fits but once I start driving the piss out of her, there will be some rubbing!
As for the rear end, who knows. If it was an 8.5, I would rebuild it and make it stronger. With this 8.2 I have there really isn't a way to make it much stronger.

Haven't posted in awhile. This is what I've been working on...
I had some Eastwood underhood black left over so I decided to paint the inside of the fenders for a lil' added protection. Why? I don't know... something to do!

I picked up a can of the Rustoleum undercoating for $7. I'll let you know if it's any good in a few months! It went on nice but after two coats, the can was empty. Enough for one inner fender.

It was worth the lil' look I got from the wife when we got home from work and the box was at the door! lol :naughty: I told her this was one of the less expensive kits. Everything was okay until I told her this was just for the front! :help!:

With Sharpie in hand, I grabbed the hub and went to the wheels to make sure I installed the studs in the appropriate holes!

Now the problem is how do I tighten these things to 77 ft. lbs.? I can't grab on to the hub good enough. I tried to put a wood block between the studs. I'll ask the wife for a hand.

Question... does the seal sit flush with the hub or does it bottom out with the lip inside the hub? The bearing has some movement.

The way I've put studs in before is to slip a larger nut down over the stud, then tighten a wheel nut onto the stud. That will pull the stud into place on your hub. It may, however, mark up the finish on the hubs.

After the bolts were torqued to 180 in lbs, I attempted to safety wire for the first time...

The next three attempts were much better. I couldn't say that for the pliers though. They broke! That's what you get for $20 off of Ebay. Nothing the weldr couldn't fix though.

All done with the wiring. I almost want to go back and re-do the first one. I don't think it's coming apart and no one is going to be looking at it!

I like safety wiring and do it quite a bit -- some info for it, should be between 7-12 twists per inch with a ~1/2" pig tail folded under itself in a way that also tightens. Not bad for a first attempt and should be fine there, but a couple are somewhat neutral :dunno: So long as its pretty tight, should be good

And I think this convinced me to get those brakes as well! :cool:

I'm having fun keeping up with your progress, lots of fun stuff you're doing. I noticed the aftermarket A-arms in the build but saw you didn't perform the Gulstrand mod while the subframe is out. Are you using a tall spindle or ball joint to help out with the suspension geometry?

I read the 7-12 twists per inch somewhere. I was worried about breaking the wire. I guess it's pretty strong stuff! The brakes are nice... a lot better than the old rusty looking ones! I'll post some more pics later today.

Yes, I have the .5 in Power Perfromance tall ball joints. My other subframe I had I did the Guldstrand mod on. With everything still in... piece of cake! Cheap too.

Thanks for looking guys. I'll be posting some more pics today. I had issues with the dust shield yesterday. I don't think I'll be running one. Also have to go get a new bolt for the spindle. The last brakes I put on came with a long bolt that I had to take a hacksaw to so it wouldn't interfere with anything. The Wilwood kit didn't provide this one bolt! So to the hardware store for a proper size bolt!

In this pic you can see where I had issues with the dust shield. Even if I cut the circular area out, I would still have to do some more cutting or pounding to make it work. Therefore, i'm going shieldless!

Next I installed the rotor assembly along with the outer bearing.

I had some issues with this. When I went to tighten the spindle nut down, it ran out of threads! I was no where near to the point I needed to be. So I decided to use the old spindle washer along with the new one. The one that was in the kit was thicker but obviously not thick enough. I will contact Wilwood on Tuesday. Do any of you see a problem with this? I was able to adjust everything to OEM specs afterwards.
Another issue was with the dust cap... awesome by the way. A lot better than trying to tap the damn thing in like on the old ones! What a PITA! Anyway the issues was with the cotter pin. It was hitting the dust cap and i could feel it when i was turning the rotor. A lil' massaging of the cotter pin and all is well.

The caliper was next. Pretty straight forward.

In this pic you can see the bolt at the top (pointing down). They provided you with many shims but suggested you start with two to begin with. Two shims betwen the caliper and the bracket. This was to center everything up and to make sure the bolt end was even with or just protruding from the bracket. Two shims did the trick.

Are you talking about doing the inner fenders? If so, you could mask off the fender but I don't know how well the coverage would be inside on the inners. make sense?

Okay, yes you can just remove the entire fender. It's attached in the front to the header panel and the lower valance. Don't forget to count the shims and where they go!

I went out early this morning to try and beat the heat. Got the driverside done and it wasn't too bad knowing what I was in for. I only had to use one spindle nut though. I tried it with the two and I couldn't even get the spindle nut to the hole. WTF? Oh well. I'll be contacting Wilwood tomorrow and see what they have to say.
I put the caliper on and bolted it down and something wasn't right. The bolt end was about to hit the rotor! I used the same amount of shims (2). I was ready to add another shim and as I was reomving the bolt, I looked over and the box of shims and what did I see... two washers that I forgot to use with the bolts. Duh! Problem solved.
I safety wired the caliper bolts and it wasn't as bad as I expected. It was just a weee bit tight in there.

I then installed the pads. Wow talk about easy! Remove fancy pin, drop said pads in, reinstall pin, Done. I can see how nice it would be to change the pads, say for a track day. Two minutes then some bedding in time.

I spoke with Wilwood the other day about the spindle washer issue and they seemed surprise also. They said it would NOT be a problem with two washers on. As long as it's (bearings) adjusted right.
This weekend... cutting quarter panels out and homemade mini tub? We'll see and post pics of course!

I need to get to the quarters but something always comes up. I need to make a list and start with number 1! I had some left over Valspar primer so I decided to spray the inner fenders and the radiator support.

I attempted to weld the cowl panel on and had nothing but problems. First the heat was too high. Kept burning holes in the new, thinner metal. Then turned the heat down, welded, beautiful weld, then 'pop' it didn't hold! I blame it on the weld thru primer! lol When I welded the inside I first removed all the primer (being inside) who cares, and I had no problems with the welds... beautiful!

I was cleaning the cowl area today and have a few questions for all of you.
1. What are your thoughts on painting the dash the same as the body color?
2. What type of seam sealer did they use in these areas. It's not your typical sealer as it was applied to bare metal. I thought you primered first then put down the seam sealer.

Some other problems I ran into. When I installed the Wilwood flex lines I turned the tire to make sure there was no binding or clearance issues. Come to find out I did have some clearance issues. It appears the 245's on 17x8 wheels are going to hit the UCA and the subframe. I was thinking these would clear with no problems. That's what I get for thinking. I'll have to investigate this. David Pozzi asked if I could move the wheels out more? Not quite to that stage yet! I guess I could throw a fender on and see what happens. but then again there is no motor in it. Would that really matter?

IMO if your doing a black interior then do the dash black, im putting epoxy primer on cowl and firewall than the seam sealer that way the primer gets into the seams for protection im using a sealer in a tube like caulking, thats a big bummer about your wheels sorry to here it

That's what I was thinking... black! But I wanted to get some color on there and since I was doing the cowl area, I figured I could just continue into the dash and spray some Tangelo! I don't know. The sealer thing has thrown me. The sealer I used previously was in a caulking gun also. I applied it after the primer. This stuff I removed was black in color and there was no primer under it. Just plain metal as you see in the pics.

The back spacing is 4.875. I really didn't think I would have any problems with this. I'm not too concerned yet. I'll let the build get a lil' further.

So now I got to thinking how I was going to get in there and remove the inner without screwing it all up to make my mini-mini tub? I have an idea where some of the spot welds are for the deck lid support but I have to deal with the rollbar.

I've seen in other threads they just cut the inner and outer at the seam. Are there numerous spot welds holding these together? I found two where I started removing the undercoating.

I'm thinking it might be easier to buy new inners and not worry too much about destroying these. I'm only looking at gaining an inch on the inside to fit these 10" wheels. They fit now but I'm sure once the rear starts articulating (sticking w/ leafs) there is gonna be some rubbing. I've decided to do away with my mini tub project. I don't have the time or the money and all I do is look at this thing sitting in the garage. I know it would be more difficult to do it later but if I want to I can later! Anywho, I can't stay on one thing too long. As I can't finish it before moving on to something else. My last coat of clear and WTF was I thinking! I got too close with the gun and the all mighty run appeared. Oh well it's only the glove box door. Should be easy enough to repair. It's the perfect time for "run" practice.

I also got the Hotchkis leaf springs in. Pretty straight forward, but nothing goes as planned for me. I had my issues but got it all straigtened out. Working on routing the brake lines now. Will post some pics once I get them installed. I do know that these newer brake lines are a lot stronger(harder) than the old. Either that or unless you spend $$$ on a flaring tool they all suck!

I had to make a piece for the prop valve to mount to. I've seen these mounted to the fromnt of the MC, just below it, and on the firewall. I decided to mount it just behind the booster.

I used one of the booster mount studs to mount the prop valve. I made sure I wouldn't have any clearance issues with the fuse block.

I tried to use all the stainless lines I had. This line originally went to the front left. Now it supplies the tee.

The first 3-link will be for the 2nd Gen F-Body platform, which will be launched at SEMA. That will be followed shortly thereafter with a 1st Gen system, but that is still in the R&D phase and won’t be available until (early) next year.

So I'm at a waiting period now. After I got the new clutch and tranny bolted up and the engine dropped in, I found out that the clutch fork hits the fire wall. After doing a search over on TC, the consensus was wrong clutch fork. But it worked before the swap of the clutch and T/O bearing. Then I saw the warning on the Centerforce paperwork:
CAUTION: IF YOUR VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH A CAST IRON
THROWOUT BEARING ARM, CENTERFORCE THROWOUT BEARING
N1430 WILL NEED TO BE USED.

I installed the other T/O bearing. I took a grinder to the fork and it threw sparks like a "sparkler" on 4th of July. Cast iron correct? Not the long streaming ones when cutting steel body panels. I had a few say it was the wrong bearing. I'm going bearing route first. If it doesn't solve the problem then I'll replace the fork.
I'll let you know what i find out. Any thoughts?

Well not being able to finish one thing before starting another I almost got something else done! After I got the new clutch assembly(wife's Christmas present 2 years ago!) bolted in and the tranny bolted back up I dropped everything back in. I was laying under the car and noticed that the clutch fork was going to hit the firewall. I had the wife push in on the pedal and sure enough wasn't going anywhere! I did a search and found that I had the wrong clutch fork. Why did it work before? Centerforce said if I had a cast iron clutch fork I needed a different T/O bearing. I did a spark test on it and thought I had a cast iron fork. Bought the other T/O bearing and went to work. We removed the tranny and compared the two bearings. They looked identical! WTF? So thanks to another TC member, I modified the clutch fork.

We buttoned everything back up and it went together sooo easy. What a surprise! I went inside pushed in on the pedal and I had "gobs" of room! His words.

I said I almost got something done. The next problem was when we went to bolt the crossmember back in and get the tranny lined up. The previous owner had modified a turbo 400 crossmember, I think, to make it work with the Muncie. There was no way the tranny was going to line up with the mount without seriously tweaking it into place. No need for extra strain on it!

I will remove both of the mounts and re-weld the original mount onto the right side where they had welded the homemade channel mount. I will get the crossmember back in and line everything up and tack the mount in place. Remove and finish welding it. Photos and progress to be posted later today... hopefully!

Didn't realize how long it's been since I posted! It's like I fell of the face of the Earth! There's been a lot of honey-dos, trips to Disneyland, birthdays, holidays.... no excuses. Let's get caught up. Spring is right around the corner... or is it here already in California? LOL

Here's a pic of the finished xmember. That was not as easy as I was expecting. Keep this, toss that, re-weld done... NOT! The original mounting bracket that I was going to keep ended up being too short. I had to get some new metal and make my own. After tacking it on a few times and realigning it under the car, I was able to finally weld it up. Hopefully it want be under there too long as I want to go with a 5 or 6 speed tranny.

The wife also bought me some Spaghetti Engineering LED tail lights. I couldn't just put them in the stock bezels so I took out the bezels and had them powdercoated. I wanted to get some billet ones but I couldn't see spending $400+ right now. This cost me $80! I really like the way they turned out. Who knows how long it will be before I purchase the billet ones now! :yeah:

It's been long enough! the wife just gave me the okay to pick up a used 12 bolt from a 68 Camaro so I won't be doing any fabrication on the 9 inch I have. I started the wet sanding process on the 2" cowl hood... it looks like 6" in the pic! I found some low spots during the process. Nothing the glazing putty can't take care of.

Color compliment #327 checking in. Looks great. When I go back upstairs I will have an orange creamsicle in honor of the occasion... unless all the orange are gone, then you have to settle for lime or maybe root beer but I am good with that too.

They're never really done but close enough! I still have to sand the clear and lay the stripe. Install the mirrors and headlight buckets... all the small details! I worked out my issues with the horrible brake sound. Just had to keep bedding them in. She's no show car but I wasn't buiding a show car.

Ha! As you can see by Mike's comment, not so good. Engine issues, timing, electrical, ignition who the f*^k knows! I'll throw some pics up of what I have been doing with her though.
Almost had or I did have an electrical fire the other day. Keep blowing the ignition fuse so I have to hunt that issue down now.

The electrical fire I smelled turned out to be the coil. Burnt to you know what! Not normal? Just left the key on for a bit. I've done it before with no issues. Brand new distributor too. Ugh. There would be no where for the electrical current to go unless there was a short in the coil, correct? I'm looking for some more feedback on it before I go storming back to O'Reilly's to take it back. MSD and I are not getting along too well lately. :)
Tuning issues with your car? That's what got me into this mess. Just want to tune it and get the timing spot on. Now I'm stuck without a running car.

I started a thread in electrical looking for answers and advice. I'm thinking there had to be a short in the coil before all of this went down. It's my understanding if electricty has no where to go, it stops flowing. I want my $$$ back or a new distributor. :(

Yeah, that's Atomic Orange...ZO6 color, I figured you would like that! Well, as far as your problem, all I can say is that I hope that is it. I switched out dist, then coil, then spark box one at a time! Let's just say, I have doubles of everything now. I even replaced iGN switch. Just be careful not to burn your car down....If your problem is something else such as a bad ground or open circuit.......? Let us know what happens!

the key is on while driving and the juice has a place to go, down the wires and into the spark plug, if the key is on and not running juice has nowhere to go and just builds heat into the epoxy of the coil till the plastic gives up and melts....on the ground issue early camaros needed lots of grounds, 1) one at least frame to body, 2) two frame to engine block one on the front of block and one on the rear, so a minimum of three, and you should have two from battery to chassis

Yes, there is a yellow pearl in it. Came that way, none was added. I didn't have any issues. All the quarts that were purchased were mixed together in gallon containers! Don't get me wrong... there are issues. User errors! :) I'm still going to fix some issues and re-sand the entire car to put the stripe on. Then clear it again. I only have 2 coats of clear on now.

Met someone you know at Hot August Nights. Can't remember his name. Blue 68 with black wheels. Runs the Marina autocrosses. Talked to him about getting my arse up there to run them next year. Nice guy. Understood my situation about not building a "show car". :rotfl:

TKO 600 with .64 overdrive! I always make a big purchase every year we go to HAN. Summit's 10% off during the event. Well this year with all the gift cards I had from the previous Christmas and birthday, I got the OK from the boss. Last year it was the Currie 9 inch. Painted everything up front that I could black. Put it all back together, finally. It's only been apart for 2-3 years. Installed the spoiler that I've had before I even bought the car!!
I read the stories of damaging sheet metal using the braces with the spoiler so I just screwed it in and left the corner brace off.

The past few days I was working o getting the TKO installed. I pulled the Muncie out and the next day I go out there and have a look at the TKO. Hmmmm, something doesn't look right? The 26 spline input shaft vs. the 10 spline on the Muncie!! Call around looking for an 11" clutch disc and no one has any in stock! :banghead:
On to the next project... installing the 9 inch thats been sitting in my weight room for the past year. Need to do this anyway so I can get the measurement for the driveshaft.

The Hotchkis leafs just weren't doing it for the drop(1.5) so I added some 1" lowering blocks. I have 1.5" too but started with these.

Still need to plumb the brakes and add some gear oil. Waiting for some body bushings (stock height). **WARNING** Don't do the .5" lower body bushings if you plan on making any changes! The new crossmember doesn't fit. Heck I played havoc with the other one but made it work. I'm done with messing around with these bushings.
