In a sense of vanity that a car is never truly done, I have decided to blow apart my 1968 Camaro and completely upgrade just about everything on the car. Here's the plans for the car that I will keep everyone updated on.

Chassis

- Speedtech front clip - powder coated
- Speedtech upper and lower control arms
- Rack and Pinion
- AFX spindles
- Solid body bushings
- Mini-tub

Rear

- Speedtech torque arm
- Coil overs

Transmission and gears

- T56 (possibly a TREMEC magnum, we'll see how it goes)
- Not sure on clutch yet
- ATS clutch master cylinder/bracket
- 9" narrowed rear-end, most likely with 3.89 gears

Engine

- LSx (LS something, haven't worked out yet)
- Shooting for 550-600hp
- Speedtech LS swap stainless headers
- Holley LS Swap headers for hp and tq comparisons
- Autokraft oil pan
- Holley LS Swap pan
- Speedtech and Holley LS swap engine mounts

Fuel

- Rick's tank's - Stainless tank for mini-tubbed cars
- Rick's Tank's fuel pump mod with in-tank fuel pump
- Holley fuel pump, filter and regulator

Brakes

- Baer Pro-Plus - 6 piston calipers and 14" rotors.
- Wheels unknown at this time. Definitely trying for 18" (not keeping the TTII's)

I'm sure there's things I'm missing, I'll do my best to keep this as up to date as possible.

Hey Max -- your car is beautiful and the plan sounds solid. You'll definately need 18s as with those 6Ps. Look forward to more updates as you move forward!

TTII's are played out, but they really do something for that car, at least in that pic. Very nice, looking forward to seeing this build progress.

Thanks guys!

Parts have started arriving!!

Got this is the mail this morning, Autokraft's LS swap oil pan.

Just from the sheer bulk of this thing I can tell it's a quality piece.

Ed, the color is a 2001 or 2002 Kia Electric Blue... has some metal flake in it and at the time, 2003ish it was almost $1k a gallon! :(

If your ditching the TTII's I may be interested depending on what size/bolt pattern they are...and if its a decent deal. I am looking into getting much better wheels that my stock snowflakes in the next 6 months (will be doing a lot to the car in the next 8, looking for good deals now before I have money to spend hah)

Welp, now that the motor is sold I suppose it's time to actually get down to business and make this thing happen.

The Quicktime LS bellhousing came along with the LT to LS T56 swap kit also came. I'll get pics in a bit.

Trying to maximize the room in my garage and still keep the Mrs. happy so she can park in the garage

Yours truly, removing the hood. It had been raining pretty badly that day.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/lrg1790_em21137-1.jpg

Let's call this the "Before" picture :)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/lrg1791_em21139-1.jpg

Trying to remove the entire front sheetmetal in one giant swoop.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/lrg1793_em21145-1.jpg

As you can tell by this photo, I was quite pissed. I doubt this bolt has ever been removed since it left the factory. My brand new 750ft-lb impact gun sheared this bolt clean off right in my hands.

Angry doesn't not quite accurately describe how I felt.

The bolt itself was loose, it spun every time I tried to loosen it, making things very difficult. Also, you can tell by the body mount that this hasn't been touched in a long time.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/lrg1794_em21148-1.jpg

So, i'm keeping with "man" tradition, I used it as a great excuse to buy a new tool

Just for the record, that red "Diablo" blade is totally killer! Made short work of the bolt and was still very sharp, it's thick too which meant it didn't bend and contort all stupid kinds of directions when I cut off the bolt.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/lrg1795_em21151-1.jpg

Annnnndd... Done. The body is loose now. Who wants to come over and help me move it??

I have to give credit to the wife, she came out and held the crescent wrench while I gave it hell. Both of our hands hurt like hell after that.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/lrg1796_em21152-1.jpg

That's all for now! :)

I'm working on the engine as we speak, talking to a few different companies right now.

Couple guys came over last night and took the front clip off with me, that was a massive amount of help!

It takes at least 3 guys, 4 is best as we found out, but 3 is an absolute must.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/lrg1797_em21222-1.jpg

Don't worry, i put some cardboard under the body so it won't scratch :)

I'll be interested to see how the mini-tubbing goes without paintwork being planned. I know it's been done, but it will be of interest for me to see it well documented and who's tubs (or kit) you utilize etc...

maxharvard
05-26-2011, 07:55 AM
Shouldn't be too bad I wouldn't think. I'm not touching the outside sheet metal, so I imagine it can't be that bad.

maxharvard
06-01-2011, 04:52 AM
Well, more stuff removed.

Still waiting on the rims to get here so I can measure for a rear-end. Got a really slick 9" coming from Bear's Performance as soon as I know the dimensions.

Max, I've been there with the body mount bolts on my car. I know exactly what you went through. For me it was tons of PB Blaster before I finally gave up and got the Sawzall out.

If I could offer a suggestion on motor...refererence Andrew Borodin's GTO. He went with a stock L92 and only did and L76 intake swap, LS7 Camshaft and Headers and he was getting over 500 horsepower. Go bigger on the cam and you're right around 550 with a good tune.

Just a quick update.

Did my first siphon today, 7ft of hose and an air compressor = no bad taste! Robert from MNGMP.com showed me how to do it right.

Quickly realized that I had more gas than my stupid misreading gauge told me. I almost ran out of places to stuff 93 octane! Apparently my law mower loves it! HAH!

The build just took a massive leap forward.

I took my LT T56 and converted it into an LS T56 with the help of Myron at TPIS and Rockland Gear.

The procedure wasn't all that hard honestly, it went better than I thought it would have.

Gotta clean it to look purdy!

The wife got me this for Father's Day

http://www.plxkiwi.com/kiwibluetooth/

Allows me to run my Android phone and run diagnostics with a bunch of other parameters. A friggin' scan tool on my phone! What a world! LOL

She told me, "now I that I figured the Camaro will have a fancy new engine, you'll need this"

HAH!! Awesome!

Ok, first things first.

That bluetooth device that my wife bought me is FRIGGIN DANGEROUS!!

I couldn't keep my eyes off all the little doo-hickies and gauges and all the parameters while I was driving! LOL

Secondly, gas tank came out last night. I was amazed at how much gas was still left in the tank even after siphoning it all out! Maybe 4-5 gallons left. I filled up the wifes car and almost filled my catch can again... sheesh.

Perhaps you should see if you can find someone to photograph all these parts..? We're a very visual sort of folks... although a box of fittings is not the most glamorous subject for the artists eye through the lens is it? Or is it the artist that makes it glamorous to the beholder?

Small update.

Aluminum 2" cowl showed up from AMD yesterday. Looks very nice and is very light! So far I'm impressed.

Also, made the decision to run with one of these bad boys! Finally! That decision was really getting on my nerves.

Talked with Horace and David from Mast and both were very helpful. They were able to work with me and my intake. They agreed to let me ship them my Holley intake and they would dyno it for me and crate the whole thing back up! What a deal! Horace seems to think that the LS3 intake will make more power than the Holley one, I'm not so sure but thankfully Horace agreed to test it for me, which is super cool.

Shooting for 600+ hp. If I (Mast) gets close with 590 or so... I'll be a happy camper!!

I believe I've answered the question: What would happen if I called SpeedTech and only said, "Send me one of everything" LOL

I'm really glad Roger convinced me to have it powdercoated. That was the best investment I think I could have made. Just simply gorgeous color and ultra smooth to the touch, not like anyone is going to touch it, but I know its there and I'm super impressed.

I was expecting something much heavier and bulkier, but this is light enough for my brother and I to pick up easily fully built.

It came packed super tight and nothing was stacked on top, which was good.

Just got the email from Mast about my motor.

Looks like 592hp and 505tq. All this with 105* air temps. So, I'm guessing on an average Minnesota 85* day, we will easily hit 600hp, which was my goal all along! :)

The graphs are a bit hard to read because the stock LS3 intake and Holley intake colors are the same, but overall the holley intake made more peak HP but less torque, which is what Holley said would happen.

All in all it should be a good screamer at 7k! :D

No massive update today, haven't had much "loud time" with the air tools because my 1 year old needs to sleep so I have to do this in whatever free time I have... not fun.

Taking stuff off a little bit at a time, making sure to cut a little short. I don't have the mini-tubs here yet, so I can't mock it up before making my close out pieces for the frame.

Getting there! No turning back now... frame has been cut and the junk metal has been scrapped.

Got the milled finish speedtech headers yesterday. I like this finish honestly because it reminds me of Indian Larry... He was such a neat guy and had a great way of thinking about machines that I think he'd like this finish.

Last night a buddy was able to help me get the motor into the speed tech front subframe. This thing is gonna be killer, that's all I can say!!

We also broke the hoist link to the chain, that was a very scary moment.

The rear-end is in!! No thanks to (you know who you are). :P

I should have listened to Roger, the rear end when I measured was spot on with his measurements, but I had to be stubborn and go in 1/2" and of course... it's a 1/2" too narrow. Got spacers, all is good, not a big deal, but I should listen better next time. The wheels and tires are TIIIIGGGHHTTT... maybe 1/2" of room on the inside, pretty close, hopefully there isn't a lot of deflection from the torque arm when cornering hard.

Either way, it all adds up to the fact that it will be on the ground very very soon!! :)

Oh, one other thing... I guess there's a difference between stud thread sizes??? I didn't know this. The old style is a fine thread and the newer versions are a course thread... Now i have to have 2 different lugs, one set for the front and one set for that back LOL!

1/2" is plenty. My falcon is about there right now, 275 in the stock wheel well. But with mt 3-link and watts I have not lateral translation of the suspension. I do hate driveways though. I have to hit those straight on.

BTW, nice car.

I don't know a lot about wheel studs but I can't remember ever seeing course thread wheel studs before. Thats kinda scary. I would think fine thread would be much stonger, secure and better for torquing down.

Well, it turns out that this is fairly normal apparently if you go with a Ford type rear-end. I asked and they told me that's the standard Ford thread pattern and the GM version is different.

Oh well, not a major deal, just gotta make sure to have both on hand LOL.

The car sits 3.5-4.5" off the ground .... I don't remember the roof line ever being that low before... yeesssh!!

Minor update:

Had to move the car around the garage, snow is coming and I'd like to park my daily driver in the garage. Wiping snow off a car daily is a pain. I had to dismantle the front clip, which really isn't that big of a deal considering i'm about to put in the AutoRad radiator and core support. Makes for more room in the garage any how.

Not so glamorous, the life of a guy cleaning up the garage. LOL

I had to cut and install the Unisteer steering shaft though, made it a lot easier to turn the wheels with the steering wheel as opposed to kicking each tire a million times. Guess I can cross that job off the list.

Small update:

Ok, this spending 2-3 hours at a time in the garage and seeing no visible progress is getting a tad tiresome!! LOL

Wiring is certainly not my strong point, but AAW's kit doesn't make it seem like the giant mountain I'm making it out to be.

I'm slowly figuring out that with my setup as-is... I won't need a lot of the harness...

- dash harness - GONE (all taken care of by the Stack cluster)
- Console cluster harness - GONE
- Engine wiring harness - GONE (the LS's harness takes car of that easily)

So in a lot of ways this is easier and harder at the exact same time. I'm really glad I went with the upgraded kit that has 18 circuits, always room to throw in a banging stereo later if I want to :D

Been wiring like a mo'fo lately.

I finished the rear wiring harness yesterday and now it's on to the front wiring harness. I tried to clean things up a bit and remove a lot of lead wires for the engine bay that really aren't necessary anymore (water temp wire, starter solenoid wire...etc). Leaves me about 10 total wires under the hood, not including the LS wiring bundle.

Anywhoozle,

How close is the 2" cowl hood to fitting? I don't think a 4" would look right on your car, maybe 3 tops. Too bad to get rid of that intake, but if you do, there has to be something better than the stock intake look.

While I wait for the new LS3 intake to get here, I thought I'd finish the wiring in the dash since the rest of the car wiring is pretty much done.

Trying to integrate the AAW system with the LS wiring harness with the Stack Cluster was a bit of a noodle-scratcher, but it wasn't all that bad all things considered.

The fuel pump comes on nicely for 5 seconds and stops just like it should. Radio works, all the lights work (head lights, turn signals, brakes ..etc..)... the only one I haven't hooked up yet that I'm sort nervous about is the LS wiring harness wire for the "start" signal.... Too nervous!! HAH!

Anyways, I think I'm a bit low on oil pressure, eh?

Hope they don't mind I posted this little snap shot I took the other night. Thanks again guys! If you guys don't have a copy, go out and get one!

Latest Update:

Found a place for the ECU. I didn't really want to put the ECU in the cab as that would have required me to drill another hole in the firewall. So, this seemed to be the most logical of places with the amount of wire I had to work with. It's hidden and out of the way and once the intake tube is installed, no one will even see it.

I finally got some time away from the wife for a bit to work on the car.

My buddy Nate from www.one-guys-garage.com (hire him, he's talented) came over and built me a rear seat delete panel that he was able to do in an afternoon and probably would have taken me 3 weeks! It matches the floor carpet perfectly and I'm pretty happy with the results. Beats taking that old stupid rear seat in and out all the time. I can finally get the drivers seat in and start finishing the interior once I figure out the transmission situation.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/02/6872781159_fc4f38ae7a_b-1.jpg

While Nate worked, I was able to get a lot of small projects done on the engine such as the hood hinges, some extra wiring for the fans, bolting up the front sheet metal...etc... all small junk.

The new intake is starting to grow on me, I'm starting to like it.

Here's Nate holding down the new aluminum hood. Seems to fit fairly well considering the front fenders aren't even close to be aligned properly. Pretty neat to finally see it almost to being driveable!

What computer / wiring harness did you use for your LS? Also are you going to fab up your intake tube / air box?

I am about to tackle the intake tube on my project. I believe Speed by Specter makes a cold air kit for 1st Gens. I havn't had a chance to research it yet. Sometimes its cheaper to buy and modify then build from scratch. And then again, sometimes it isnt ;)

Lesson #3,203 for myself: When pouring new power steering fluid into the reservoir... make sure you've connected all the hoses... Kinda spilled half a quart of PS fluid all over the shop floor before I realized I forgot to hook up the return line. LOL

Not a lot of work has been done on the car lately as I've been working on other projects, completely unrelated to the Camaro.

My buddy Nate Shaw made me another part for my car, this intake tube. It has to be an odd shape because the over flow tank for the radiator protrudes out a bit. Nate's going to match the valve covers' finish, so it should be killer.

Your intake tube looks great! Are you going to build a block off plate between the engine compartment and the air filter?

FYI, I ordered the speed by specter intake I mentioned in an earlier post. It is very nicely put together as far as fit and finish but takes up a huge amount of the drivers front fender area. The block off plate bolts right up next to the radiator ie. where the catch can goes :( Im either going to send it back or try and see if they will send out a longer tube and then make some modifications.

Man, your engine compartment looks killer!!! Im not sure how you hid all the wires so well. I just layed in my wiring harness and it looks like an octopus orgy on top of my motor.

I got some sweet bling in the mail and it's been a while since I've been able to get to it, but LED's are the way to go. They are so much brighter and clearer, not to mention the bezels look hella sweet compared to the dusty old ones. I got mine from Eddie Motorsports, the same place I got my hood pins, latch and hood hinges.

Just noticed that I hadn't replaced the flasher yet so the it looks like the brakes are on full all the time. Funky stuff happens I guess when you try to install LEDs with the correct flasher.

UPDATE 4-29-12

I was able to find some time between work and my anniversary to get my transmission put in.

I got me a Tranzilla!! MUUHAHAHH!!!

It's basically a modified Tremec Magnum by Rockland Standard Gear.

Gear ratios:
2.97 2.07 1.43 1.00 .80 .50

It's built with carbon rings in gears 1 through 4 and a viper tailshaft/extension.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/lrg1939tranzilla-1.jpg

I'm so god damned stoked for this I can't take it. This thing shifts so damn nice it's crazy! Can't wait to actually drive it and shift it for real HAH!

They told me that this combo is good up to 1,000ft lbs, so i'm really ready to upgrade that motor when it gets a little too "slow" hehe.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/lrg1938tranzilla2-1.jpg

The only problem I ran into was the cross member that comes with the speed tech frame. The Viper tailshaft is a lot lower than the stock T56. Had to add some extensions between the crossmember and the frame. Good thing this frame has so much room to play with I didn't really have to modify squat. Really makes things a lot easier, that's for sure. I need to change out the TH400 tranny yolk with a 30-spline viper version. Anyone have a spare one? *hint hint*

The car is going off tomorrow to the painter to get the hood painted, alignment and a few touch ups to some scratches I made. By then the rest of the stainless exhaust should have shown up so we literally only have that left and the car is ready to be driven!!

Great build, I need to go back through and reread several parts. Do you have any photo's of just the headers you ended up going with, what brand did you settle on using? In relationship to the oil pan height, how much lower do the headers hang down below the oil pan. I am looking for a set that don't hang down so low.

So you did go with the Stainless Works, They look really good there in there in the box in the photo near the front of the thread. I am finding that most LS headers are designed to hang below the oil pan level by about 1.5 to 2.0 inches, this doesn't work well for a car that is lowered.

Still got a few things to do like finish off the hood pins and put the rear spoiler back on, but it's pretty much ready.

I had a stripe painted on that's a nod to the new 2012 SS's... only difference is the words blue hour put in the stripe. The stripe matches the wheel lip and is lightly "brushed" on. Looks slick up close :)

Well it's track time folks!

Blue Hour made its first debut at the local AutoX scene and came away with it's first win! (Ok, its a class win and there was only 1 other car, but hey, a win is a win, amirite?!!?)

Truth be told, this is my first time racing anything that didn't involved a 'reset' button so I was very nervous about the whole notion of this with a car that is probably too much power for me and I have zero experience with driving a car to its limits.

Regardless, the car needed some time to get broken in and weed out a few problems, plus the driver really needed some seat time in the worst way.

The good news is that I was getting faster by leaps and bounds at each pass and I know I left a TON of speed on the track and the car is capable of so much more than I was able so that's very promising. I only was able to get in 3 runs before it rained and I wasn't really all that keen on trying my rain driving skills. But, by the end I had improved my times by 16 seconds on a course that really good times were 65-70 seconds.

That said, here's a photo my buddy nate took and a couple videos of my first time out.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/06/lrg1946_em26621-1.jpg

Here's my first ever run at the AutoX and Blue Hour's track debut. Randy was a very good instructor.
http://flic.kr/p/cg5UQb

Ok, here's my first spin out. I had a different instructor with me... truth be told, he even tensed up and reached for the door handles when I gunned it right before the slalom... it was kinda funny to see. I took out the timing light but the car was fine, not even a scratch anywhere on the car. :)
The best part was that this was my best run and since I tripped the lights, it counted as a full run and I wasn't DQ'd for it! LOL

Well, I just got back a day or two ago from Road America and the OPTIMA Challenge.

The entire thing felt like it lasted a week, but it really only ran for 2.5 days, it's a lot of stuff to do and very little time to do it all in. Friday I helped a group of people teach kids how to build a bike, then it was a nice dinner at Andrew Chevrolet in Milwaukee. Saturday it was a 70ish mile cruise to a car show with some dyno pulls and then onto Road America where we had tickets for the Grand Am race and NATIONWIDE series race where Danica got punted on the last lap. We then had an hour long go-kart enduro where it was teams of 4, my team placed 6th out of 12 thanks to some catch up laps by Randy Johnson of DandZ customs. Sunday, it was all racing. Goldberg was there with the OPTIMA filming crew interviewing everyone about their cars and what not. Goldberg was very nice and stayed for every picture, signed everything put in front of him and really seemed to enjoy my buddies 1,000+hp Grand National and unfortunately blew his tranny at the road course. We had to finish the road course (back half of the Road America course, 2.2 miles), a stop-box with a slalom and the AutoX which was the go-kart track, which was my favorite of the whole event.

I set myself a goal of "not be last" and that goal was achieved!! LOL I haven't seen the final tally yet, but I saw my road course times and it seemed to be about mid pack (maybe slightly lower than mid pack). There was a pretty knarly wreck by a new mustang and Jeff Van Buren (being the smart of the two of us) told me it was bad karma to post the photo, so I'll take his advice and not show it.

I met a lot of really cool people and had a great time, Cam Douglas, Jimi Day, Jim McIlvanie, Randy Johnson, Bret, Jeff Van Buren, Telly V, Goldberg and a few others that their names aren't coming to me right away, but it was a great experience and will certainly try to do it again.

So, without further ado, here's a few videos and photos of the experience. Seriously, it's an experience to say the least.

A couple quick notes:
- I didn't really feel comfortable taking the car over 110mph, so in the road course video, you'll see i kind of just hold it in 5th gear.
- My rear-end whines like crazy, I know this and am working on solving the problem.
- My go pro kept running when Goldberg interviewed me twice after the AutoX, it's essentially his arm pit, I edited that out figuring no one wanted to see it LOL.
- I'm not %100 comfortable with the car yet, so I braked early in a lot of placed and didn't really take the car to red line in many places.

These two photos I borrowed from Bangshift.com

UPDATE:

Well, it was RSE time at the Car Craft summer Nationals in St. Paul, MN. I was really psyched up for it. The finally made the track bigger, but still extremely tight and my car doesn't have the turn radius for it, which totally sucked my times right out the window.

I think I ended up 4th after everything was said and done of a field of 10-12 I believe. Jimi's AMX and the Crusher were just too much for either myself or my friend Nate to over come. Both of them were miles ahead of us on the AutoX and the Stop Box. Still, I had a lot of fun and naturally, there's never enough seat time. Btw the end I had whittled my AutoX time down to be very competitive but it didn't amount to any winning times.

I'll be back at it for sure soon, for now though the car performed well, it just needs a better pilot LOL

Here's a video of my car a friend of mine took... notice how short the course is? It's a lot worse to navigate, trust me, it was TIGHT.

A couple photos my friend at jsphoto.com took.

So I think the next step is to take it to some more AutoX's and possibly step up shocks to something much more adjustable, these single adjustables were just a dog the entire weekend, I couldn't fiddle with squat.

Well, the wife HAD to buy our boy a Camaro powerwheels for his birthday and she HAD to have me paint it blue just like Blue Hour, so me and a friend Jake spent the better part of a night tearing it down and repainting it from red to blue. It's pretty close to the color, not exact but close enough for a 2 year old.

Today, July 30th is officially his birthday so we gave it to him last night because I had to work today and wouldn't be around for him to see it and use it.

He's only 2 and already figured out the most important part... the gas pedal! LOL He can't steer for nothing (gets it from his old man) but he works that gas pedal like a mad man! HAHA!

Anywhoozle, I present you with "Project: Blue Minute"!

Welp, new updates!

The rear-end is back together and seems to be working a heck of a lot better. I even got a class win the very next event! Gotta love that! It was a bit hectic to say the least, first run I lost a lot of PS fluid after a line came loose, then I had a tie-rod bolt come undone. I ran back to the parts store, came back, reinstalled the nut and blasted off a winning time, all while being helped by fellow racers and even Nate, my competition at the event.

I really do have to tip my cap to everyone who helped me out, it was great to see people come to my aid even if were technically competing. Big thanks and mega-appreciation.

After our class win at the latest AutoX a package was waiting for me on my doorstep with a set of Triple Adjustable Shocks and coils from Ride Tech... missed my window to give them some flogging by virtually 24 hours! Such a bummer.

None the less, Max decided he needed to help daddy assemble them, to which I happily obliged (hey, less work for me, right?!). Slave labor never looked so adorable! HA!

So, I have a few fixes that the Camaro needs, it's running a bit rich right now so I have to look into the computer for that. I have to look at the PS hoses again to make sure those are still tight, I want to paint the trunk, calibrate the speedo again...etc..etc... always a list, just the items change that's all.

Also, it turns out that my first book is slated to be published! The real brains behind the book is Myron Cottrell of TPiS. I just photographed some of it and made sure it was compiled well. If you get a chance, pick one up when it comes out! Look for my second book coming out shortly on a similar but different topic :)

Well, smallish, but major update to the car.

After running the single adjustable QA1 coil overs, I was pretty much told by everyone (Jimi Day, Scott Parkhurst, Randy Johnson... et al.) that I really needed to step up my shock/spring package to dial in more speed.

That's where these Ride Tech TA's come in. Everyone I talked with wouldn't shut up about them so I figured it was worth a shot.

I haven't any track time lately to fully test them out, but here they are in all their glory!

Sorry about the crappy cell pics, it was dark in my garage that day. Bleh.

Your car keeps getting BETTER and BETTER! :-) Love the new shocks!

What ended up being wrong with your rear-end (whine)? I have a similar rear-end, and just-in-case (far from being able to drive it yet).... would like to know what to look for if I end up with the same problem. Did Bear stand behind it? THANKS!

Ohhhhh boy let me tell you.

Essentially the third member wasn't installed correctly and the races for the bearings were at a bad angle. I guess the first time I romped on it the bearings and races seated themselves properly, which made a MASSIVE backlash problem. Which in turn chewed up the entire gear set and at the posi, bearings and the gears. Pretty much a total loss. The only thing saved was the third member case!

Inquiring minds want to know...

Looking forward to seeing some "Blue Hour" exposure from the Qualifier You were at in Elkhart. I think it airs on Speed this wkd or next. I don't "need" to know exactly when because the DVR handles those sorts of things for me! LOL

Perhaps you can narrow it down for those who want to catch it airing?

Well, I suppose it's been a while since I made an update, but here goes.

Why removable steering wheel???

BECAUSE RACECAR!

No, seriously the big reason was to help me get in and out of the car. Damn these long dancers legs!! LOL

Thanks to Randy at D&Z Customs for helping me find the right hub/adapter and letting me talk his ear off at all hours of the night!

NRG claimed that it wouldn't fit a '68 column but apparently they have no clue what the hell they are talking about because it fit just fine.

The car is put away for the winter. Hell, I even got stuck in a snow storm 30 miles from home, but we made it just fine!

Ok, on to the pics.

Wow... I totally missed this. The color is 1999 Kia Electric blue :)

It's finally spring!

Time for some mods! Now, I picked up a rear spoiler from Jakes rod Shop which should help my downforce a bit in the corners, so we'll see how well it works in June when i go back to Road America for the OPTIMA Challenge.

Mmm.. Dat ass.

Secondly, I took a ride up to Bighley's autobody and removed the heater box, blower and heater core. Should save me 15-ish pounds off the front of the car :)

So some minor updates to this.

It's finally spring and I hosted an AutoX recently and got spanked by a Neon... how sad.

Regardless, I can finally get it onto a big track and let it loose. A have to admit fully that I did a major facepalm today after I looked at my dyno graph again and noticed that the redline isn't where I thought it was at 6K... nope, closer to 7K. I'm losing 50 horsepower alone! Stupid me! Should go faster now that I know I can rev it up more *insert maniacal laugh*

So, spring time brings in fluid changes and a nut and bolt session. $165 later, the car has new fluids. *insert money raining from the sky*

Seeing this my son had a little melt down that Daddy's car was "broken" and insisted on helping me put the tires back on. It was adorable. Kid was impressive to say the least, he's 2 and 1/2 and got all lugs started, takes after his dad haha!

Completely unrelated but I had a ZL1 upgraded to a custom "ZLR" that makes roughly 850 to the wheels in my garage... Looks good next to the 68, dontcha think?

Ok, well to give you all an update. I have been extremely busy with the car lately so here goes.

I shot my car a while back in October for Camaro Perfomers and it finally came out! yay!

Check out the July Issue of CP!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/07/lrg19721052896_10152924295915702_3276045-1.jpg

So if that's not awesome enough, we went racing....

I went with the moto: "No Regrets" and boy did that ever show. I posted a personal best time of 1:54 at the shortened road course at Road America and left pretty much all I could out on the track and even some paint. That time got me 21st out of 71 entrants. Considering the level of competition, I'm quite happy with my time and where I fell. Last year I ended up in the middle of the pack and this year I vowed to be well over the top %50 and that's exactly what happened. I pushed hard and really took the car much further than it had gone up until this point. Regardless, I did have a little boo-boo.

You can see it here. Skip to 3:30 if you want to see the "OOPS".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYmKLaF3aSU

You can tell my apexes are pretty weak and had a hard time with take off out of the corners, so a lot can still be done suspension and driver-skill wise. Car was lightly damaged, nothing to worry about. Driver was fine. Car even went back out for more laps later.

Here's video of 3 laps of the short course. The red Mustang had a 15 second head start and the one I pass near the end had easily a 45 second lead before I passed him. Such a rush to PASS a car! MAN!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvUfQSB8Jj4

Image of damage: Nothing major.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/07/lrg19717448_10152923587165702_1354017131-1.jpg

The go-karts this year were JAM PACKED! Holy cow we had a ton of drivers. The team of me, brian finch, Mike Norris and the BFG guy AJ finished 4th out of the 13 (i think, maybe 15) teams. Which, frankly wasn't all that bad all things considered.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/07/lrg19781016055_10152994887210078_1424172-1.jpg

BuddyP over at Pro-touring said that I haven't updated things in a while and I thought what the hell... let's keep'er rolling!

Ok, where to start... Well, I got on TV, 3 times!... LOL! That's a start.

I haven't seen it yet, but the MAV TV premiere of the OUSCI race showed a few very clear shots of my car. Here's one and in the panning shot you can see the girlfriend riding shot gun.
