Viper experts HELP! Please

What is the difference between Gen 1,2, and 3 engines? Any difference between the truck and actual Viper engine and trannys???? Are these all top end motors or are they TQ monsters? I know nothing about them and any info would be appreciated. Thanks

I have a 97 GTS, which has the 2nd gen engine. Stock they are 450hp and yes a torque monster. 488 aluminum V10. I believe the 1st gen were around 400-420 hp and I think the 3rd gen is 505hp. If you want to see pics go to http://www.cardomain.com/profile/martkat

Differences between the Gen II and III of Viper engines are pretty small. Mostly camshaft, head porting and tuning changes. The Gen I engine is a cast iron block aluminum head engine while the later engines are all aluminum. The truck engine is all cast iron. The only thing the truck engine shares with the Viper engine is that they are both 8.0L and both have 10 cylinders.

Your info is a little off as the new viper Gen III motors are 505 cubic inches or 8.3 litres. And if you are talking about the SRT-10 truck the engines are exactly the same as far as i know, aluminum block and heads with cast iron liners.

Yeah my bad. I have no info on the current platform and I ASSumed by truck we were NOT talking about the SRT-10.
Ther were actually (2)of the gen II engines. The later engines got some cam/head and tuning work.

All Viper engines are aluminum block and heads. 1st gen engine have the early port design and nobody builds headers that match the exhaust port correctly, also the thermostat is located at the back of the engine behind the intake manifold, the alternator is mounted between the trottle bodies which are funtioned by a split cable set-up.

2nd gen engines have raised exhaust ports, which you can get headers for, and the alternator is mounted on the right side of engine and the trottle bodies are connected by a shaft and use a single cable. Also the thermostat is located at the front of the engine.

3rd gen has revised heads and an intake system that uses a single trottle body.

Each engine also has it's own oil pan and filter/cooler mount

If you are looking at using the Mopar Performance ECM it is designed for the 2nd gen engines. It can be used on a 1st gen but you need to change some of the sensors and wiring harnesses to 2nd gen.

The Viper engine doesn't really share anything with the non SRT-10 truck engine.
