View Full Version : Wednesday (?) Evening One Lap of America Update

It's Wednesday evening (at least I think it's Wednesday... the days are starting to run together now) and we are on our way from No Problem Raceway outside of New Orleans to Birmingham, Alabama. The last 60 hours have been a marathon highlighted by a roller coaster of highs, lows, anticipation, frustration, disappointment, and resilience. With no breaks (or sleep) in between.
Since we started the day Monday at Carolina Motorsports Park we have been able to sneak 2 hours of sleep, eaten at MacDonalds more times than anyone thinks is healthy, and have fought back from what we thought was the end of our race thanks to the help of our friends in the Pro-Touring industry and community.
After our break down on Monday night we were able to tow the OPTIMA Batteries OneLapCamaro first to Gainesville an eventually to Sanford, Florida where the Prodigy Customs gang was standing by to help us get back on the road if possible. When we finally arrived at a hotel that morning I took a minute to drive the car around the hotel parking lot and after listening to and watching the car, Mary and I optimistically but cautiously agreed that it didn't sound like an axle, but was more likely a bearing or differential problem. Neither are a whole lot better than the other but they were problems that we could fix... And that we could fix quickly.
When we got to Prodigy Custom's brand new facility in Sanford Frank and Michael immediately started working on the car and found the problem as soon as the first axle a was pulled. The bearing was completely destroyed. It looked like the axle seal failed and the gear oil leaked past until it was nearly dry and then the bearing quickly ate itself. The passenger side being showed advanced wear so the decision was made to replace both. When we pulled the center section out of the housing Mary found what she considers to be way too much debris for comfort so the decision was made to change out the 3rd member with the spare that we carried in the trailer with us.
Once the new diff was in and axles reassembled and installed we made the decision to replace the front rotors with the ones that DSE brought us the day before. That was done in short order and barely 5 hours after rolling in on a flat deck we were heading out under our own power.
It was 7 pm and we had missed the one event that Mary and I had been looking forward to more than any other... Daytona. Definitely a disappointment for both of us but at least we were back in the game. After Daytona the race stopped in Gainesville for some quarter mile action but that was wrapping up as we were packing up nearly 200 miles away.
Having missed Daytona and Gainesville Mary and I evaluated our options. At this point we hadn't slept for 36 hours aside from a cat nap and although our lead in Vintage American was secure, we had effectively taken ourselves out of the running in the overall points. It was 7 PM and we were nearly 800 miles from New Orleans and 500 or so miles from Birmingham so we had two choices... 1. Head back to Gainesville, properly breaking in the new rear end and brakes, get a good nights sleep and head on to Birmingham, meeting up with everyone on Thursday well rested and ready to head for the finish line or 2. Try to make it to No Problem Raceway for the afternoon session, grabbing a few hours sleep on the road.
After a brief but silent deliberation, Mary and I looked at each other, smiled and said "I am game if you are" and we chose option 3... Drive all night, make 800 miles in the 12 or so hours we had, and rejoin the One Lap first thing in the morning!
To make a long nights story short that is exactly what we did, making a banzai run across the panhandle through the night and arriving just time to unload the car and get a quick look at a track map before putting our now "broken in" parts to the test...https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I think he is unhappy with you James lol :pThat car has zero points and DNS shown beside every event so far. Did they not compete this year at all?

I didn't get to see the OLC run the course today, but I did get there to see the last few cars on the track and saw the OLC as they got packed up and headed off to the next venue. The car looked and sounded awesome.

That guy did not like getting beat last year by a rookie. I'll bet it will burn even more on Saturday.

We're done at Barber and heading North to Joliet, IL... It's 420 now and the GPS is telling us that our ETA is 12:40 AM... 650 miles to go.

Mary did much better on Barber than I did with a 38th overall. She was actually faster than that but got caught behind the car that gridded ahead of her midway though her third lap.

I think that Hickman is just having fun with the name and in deference to him, he has done the race 21 times and has over 140,000 miles on that car. He and his codriver Damon are great guys (and legends in this race) but they did not answer the bell this year - they had engine issues and things came together a day or two too late. We expected them to arrive on Sunday but it sounds like they were exhausted and made the decision not to race this year... Heck of a streak to break and honestly every track we get to we expect to see them. Now Gordon in the 3rd gen... That's another story.

We're closing in on Nashville now, heading North and hoping the weather holds - it's perfect right now but the only thing thats worse than midnight runs are midnight runs in the rain. Getting ready for our first gas stop of the day and I'll try to get today's blog update done soon... Or in 250 miles when we switch again.

While i haven't met them, the Original One-Lap Camaro" guys are really nice and we were hoping they could have made the show. Sometimes things don't go as planned and this was just one of those times.

We did great today and I'll let James complete the daily update as he's got the power of prose mojo down real good. Just got through Nashville traffic (hi Brian Finch ...) and are headed to Louisville ending up near Joliet, IL early tomorrow morning. Long transit stage but we've got enough left in our tanks to get it done.

What's weird is I'm somewhat bummed that the 2011 One Lap of America is coming to an end. We've made a definite-maybe to partner up again for next years event. Any other Pro-Touring takers?

Cheers,
Mary Pozzi

I'd love to do this event! Ok who wants a co-driver?

I day dream about taking my car on an event like this sometimes. It would take a lot of work to get it even close to ready. Little things like how much wind noise I still get even after changing out my weather stripping multiple times would become to much to handle driving that much in 7 days :p

Mary,

I still have dibs on your last year of doing this. Maybe by then I will be good enough to hold my own with you.

The Original One Lap Camaro team are a class act & they even offered to be of assistance if we needed anything last year. I couldn't think of anyone I'd rather compete against, they run hard, are experienced, & are nice guys. This event is as much about survival as competing against the other guy. This (vintage American) class would benefit from some new entries, we had 4 last year. I hear there may be something special running next year. I learned to never complain about being tired, the long timers will start telling you about 6 or 8 thousand mile events with 900 mile per day runs. Brock ran one where it was 10,000 miles over 10 days!

James, Mary and Dave you guys have made this look so interesting that if I can twist Mary's arm and learn to drive worth a dam, I'd like to give it a try next year... Congratulations on your efforts for this year and who knows maybe I'll add some company in the historic class for you as the event sounds like something I'd really enjoy too...

Michael and Damon are good guys. I opened up the shop at work for them a few years ago after they had transmission trouble at Road America. Jim McIlvaine loaned them his Excursion to get to a hotel and then to a local guy to rebuild the trans the next morning. They ended up missing one day's event and left Milwaukee around noon to get to Houston by the next morning.

Reading your story about what happened in Florida and fixing it with Prodigy's help reminded me of that weekend.
