So I have now taken the first few steps in my pro touring project. I pulled the engine and transmission out on Friday and then sent it away to the body shop today for all the body work/rust repair and paint. Decided to stick with the original orange/red color but with black le mans stripes. sort of like the pictures below. So while the car is away now I can start searching junk yards and online to start gathering parts.

Whats your plan for the build?

my current plans are to upgrade to ron morris coilovers up front, with qa1 shocks and performance leafs in the back, willwood brakes on all four corners, 8 inch rear with a limited slip diff, t5 transmission, and then upgrading the original inline six and installing a custom efi system with a t3/t4 turbo.

I like your engine plans, that turbo 6 will be pretty unique.

Nice! Love the idea of a turbo I6 as well -- if it's built right you should be able to make some decent horsepower. Keep us posted and add some pics if you have them!

Love the Turbo 6 banger idea!

Did a quick search. looks like the 6 is about 60-75lbs lighter than the v8. found this also.

yeah the weight is one of the main reasons I'm keeping the six because not only will it keep the car light but it'll improve the weight distribution as well.

So the car is still away at the body shop but I've managed to gather some nice parts from my local pick-a-part and from online. Heres the list of what I've bought so far.
T5 transmission out of a wrecked fox body and a t5 conversion kit for six cylinder mustangs
short shifter
8 inch rear end (great craigslist find)
Traction Lock Differential
3.25 ring and pinion set
Let me know what you guys think!

Ordered some new parts today. Got my comp cams high energy camshaft and lifter kit from mustangs unlimited. It comes with the camshaft, lifters, valve springs, retainers, locks, seals, and timing chain set. Also ordered a full rebuild kit from classicinlines.com I opted for some bonuses in the way of flat top forged JE pistons and ARP rod and main bolt/studs. The parts should be here sometime within the next couple weeks as the pistons were a special order item. So in the meantime I will be sending away the block for machining.

I like the six-banger idea! There's a guy who drags a '64-'65 Falcon with a turbo six, using the original "log" intake manifold, even--he does very well with it. You should be able to find the article(s) online (search for turbo Falcon), if you haven't already done so... Stiffen up that tinfoil frame before adding power!

yeah the stiffening of the chassis and upgrading of the suspension and brakes are next on my list but I decided to get started on the engine since that'll take me the longest.

Finally got the car back from paint. I'm super siked with how it turned out! So now that I've got all the body work and rust taken care of I can start on the fun stuff!:revto9k:

well after driving the car around for a while I'm still quite a bit down on power from where I'd like to be even with the rebuilt engine but after researching my different options it seems I'll be able to get way more bang for my buck if I just swap in a v8 rather than try to build a comparable turbo setup. And I'll be able to use most of the parts I've already purchased.I'm looking into a blueprint 331 stroker crate engine from summit. If anybody has used this brand before I'd really love some feedback and if anybody is interested in any parts from the six cylinder drivetrain let me know.

Man, that's still a spendy motor.

Have you considered a 5.0 swap? You could get a junkyard 5.0 EFI with less than 100k on it, and wire/plumb the fuel injection for far less than just the cost of that crate motor. www.car-part.com has complete drop-outs with as low as 20k on them for $750 and less. Just me $.02 :smoke:

Yeah that would be another option but I think after I throw all of the performance parts I wanted onto that engine I'd probably still be pretty close to the cost of the crate engine.

Yup I hear ya there, just saying it'd be nice to have EFI running at its optimum all the time versus the carbureted engine, which is almost always a compromise. My thinking is just that it will give you more usable power.

Either way, it's going to be a sharp car you've got there!

I swapped in the new front grille today and removed the horse and coral. I think it gives the car a much more serious and mean look!50432

Well it seems that my plans for the car sort of exceed my budget! LOL so I've decided to come up with a new build plan. Since I've already spent money rebuilding the engine I've decided to go back to the idea of a turbo six banger with an efi system. But to keep costs down I'm going to use a megasquirt system and an ebay turbo kit.
This will be backed by a short shifted t5 transmission. Suspension wise I really like the control freak's front coilover and rear 4 link setup. It looks like a good setup and it won't break the bank either. I will use the 8 inch rear end that I already have and pick up some v8 spindles along with the v8 steering setup that way I can run 5 lug wheels. I'll probably go with a wilwood disc brake kit for the front and a summit kit for the rear. and finally I plan on using some torq thrust look a likes off of ebay in 17x7's for the front and 17x8's for the back. I think that covers the basics for my new plan. After crunching the numbers this setup seems to be able to keep me within budget with a little extra room for all of the misc items that we always overlook.

I've been doing a lot of research into blow through carbs as well as megasquirt to see which setup would be easier and more cost effective. I'm kind of leaning more towards a blow through carb now since I don't think it will be that big of a difference in performance. While on the internet the other day I found this company that sells a blow through holley two barrel carb. This would be perfect for my application. Here's the link: http://www.lowbugget.com/main_page.html let me know if you guys think it will work?

You might look here http://www.theturboforums.com/smf/index.php . There is alot of info on blow thru carbs in the carbination section. Nothing wrong with a blow thru. I have had a blow thru on my '66 for years. It has a centrifugal SC. I have run it at 7 & 9 psi. I modified my carb myself. With a turbo, I would run a boost referenced power valve and bowl vent extensions. This will help since boost is none linear with a turbo.

Oh, if you stick with the six banger let me know. I have a few holset HX30 & HX40 turbo's that might work. I would sell one reasonable. I have a couple of garret T3's I am going with instead.
