Hello,
I registered and posted a week or so ago, but the next day could not get on the forums due to a server error and the post and my registration were deleted, so if this is a repeat I apologize. Here are some pix of my '71 Datsun 510 with a '91 Supra Turbo engine.

I fabricated the exhaust and intake manifolds. Turbo, wastegate and intercooler are all custom. It made 357 rwhp on pump with a smaller turbo and more restrictive exhaust manifold so hoping for over 400 at the same boost (16-17 psi) with this set up.

Thanks for the welcome and comments. It's funny re: paint. At least half the people I meet tell me to keep it in primer. I think they like the stealth effect, but a BRE paint scheme would look nice. Every time I think about painting it, I change something mechanical instead.
Next up is to narrow the Ford 8.8 sitting in my garage and upgrade the rear leaf spring suspension (510 wagons only) to something a little newer.

 :lmao: I LOVE IT!! We need more of that kinda twisted thinking. I'll bet you've surprised more than just a few "opponents". I'd have trouble picking a colour for something like this. Just tune up the body work and leave it in a durable primer.
I have to ask........do you have problems with traction? :3gears:

I have a soft spot for BRE as well as Bob Sharp Racing having had a 73 240Z I bought from Sharp's dealership. Very nice melding of power plant and wagon. I love it. Personally, I would leave the body as is and put everything into the mechanicals.

Welcome to the site! I love the 510 and it is good to see another Datsun guy on here! My newest project is a 240Z that I'm doing some serious work to. I also have a '68 Camaro.

Thanks again everyone.
I have a soft spot for BRE ...
It's cool to have people on this board who remember the hey day and have had older Datsuns. I met Peter Brock at an American LeMans race he was covering. He was a super nice guy.
My newest project is a 240Z that I'm doing some serious work to. I also have a '68 Camaro.
240's are great swap cars. The engine bay is so big you can fit just about anything in there. I'm sure you've probably seen it but www.hybridz.org (http://www.hybridz.org/) is a great site.
I have to ask........do you have problems with traction?
Funny you should ask. I have run the stock diff which is 190 mm (about 7.5 inches) since the swap. LSD's are hard to find so I had the 8.8 in my garage for another winter project, however....
***project update**
I broke the rear end this weekend. I'm not sure what was the final straw. I didn't clutch drop it, just quite a few 50-100 mph roll on's on the back roads testing the new turbo, checking a/f ratio's etc. I stopped for gas and then was driving home when it happened. Made it home, just a little noisy on the way. I ordered 3.73's, and a Detroit TruTrac LSD today. I have to take some measurements and then I will order the axles from Moser and narrow the housing. I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. It will be nice to finally have 2 wheels working back there.

I love the cars that people build when they just don't give a crap what other people are going to think. A pro-touring 510 wagon would sound silly to me if you had shown me the idea on paper, but the pics speak volumes about how cool the idea is in reality. Nice job! :icon996:

Thanks again. The 510 community is alive and well, especially on the west coast so there are quite a few others like me, just usually not to this extreme. It's pretty cool to have something unique, though there are a lot of challenges in working on something like this chassis/engine combination where there are no kits etc. The last track day I went to I was in line next to a new SRT-10 Viper and the crowd was around my car not the Viper which was pretty satisfying to see.
The 8.8 rear end mod is in full swing. The axles are being made, I received the LSD, gears, and install kit yesterday and finished grinding all the brackets off the housing last night. The axles should be finished next Wednesday, then I will finalize the measurements for the housing and narrow it. Hopefully a week from today I will drop it off to have it assembled. The only things left besides that are to have the driveshaft made and new brake lines. Hopefully all goes well. I'm looking forward to being able to leave 2 black stripes, not just one.

After thrashing for the last week I have my rear suspension and front brake upgrades completed. The 8.8 is in. I don't know of anyone who has done this in this type of car. A few pix
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Still need to tie secure brake lines, but it's in.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I welded on a swaybar bracket which allowed me to reuse the 510 bar.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Old rotors cracked. Track days kill drilled rotors.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Baer 2 piece rotors with aluminum hats. I thought they would be lighter but the rotors are so much thicker that they actually weight the same or more. Yes they are drilled. I bought them a while ago, will go slotted only next time.

I leave for Thunderhill on Tuesday for a track day, then to Mt. Shasta City for a couple of autocrosses on the weekend. A little over 1200 miles round trip.

Thanks. Re: calipers it helps to have a sense of humor sometimes when dealing with a project car. As far as Florida goes with gas prices for premium and a 3000 + mile trip we'd have to win alot to make it profitable :) I wrapped up my shakedown runs today and everything seems to be good to go for the trip. Leave at 6am tomorrow for the exciting 500 mile drive. Supposed to be around 105 for the high at Willows so we're trying to beat the heat by leaving early.

The olive drab idea is cool, use a stencil to spray some white lettering like a humvee.
Supra510
07-26-2005, 12:18 PM
Thanks guys. I've thought about the stencil idea. I think it would be cool I'm just trying to decide if I want a legit paint job or not at this point.
Things went pretty well on the road trip. Fuel pump failed at the track and had an exhaust clamp issue, but overall pretty happy with everything. It was blazing hot at Thunderhill, but coolant never went above 210 and that was at 16psi boost. I think my water injection helped a bit with that as most people were having overheating issues at anything over 10 psi.
Posted a few pix in this thread https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6718
One thing about track days is that you never push your car hard enough in any other environment to find out what will break it. Nothing I could do about a fuel pump failure.

Well I decided to change the look of the front of the car a bit as well as move the oil and air/water intercooler heat exchanger out from in front of the radiator. I also wanted something sturdy to attach a splitter to for track days so I fabricated an airdam using the stock bumper as a base. (Grill fits better with the trim in there).
Still needs finish work, but I'm getting there. Next step is to figure out how I'll mount those coolers in the large opening.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I ended up moving the side pieces down and under the bumper. Used 3 main pieces and a lot of little ones.

A few updated pix of the bumper and grill/headlights + the olive drab I was thinking about. Bumper came out ok for my first try. Grill/headlights give it a little meaner look.
I have 2 oil coolers in the center section of the bumper, passenger side is for the intake, drivers side for the air/water intercooler heat exchanger. Oil temps were 200 max in 90's heat at Thunderhill with 16 psi boost so I'm very happy with the oil cooler setup.

Cool car but why did you go with the Toyota Motor instead of The nissan turbo motor..Weren't the Nissans V/6's and Toyota's inline? or better yet, a Skyline Motor. Saw a real nice one at Laguna
Seca last year or the year before with Nissan Turbo Power. love 510's I have a friend who is very well off, and he has a orange California low mile 510 Wagon he drives all the time..

That's a very long story. I originally had a built up 280zx turbo engine in there and had made the firewall modifications at that time. When that engine expired (may it RIP), I had the choice to rebuild it or find another inline 6. The 7m-gte can be had for next to nothing used from Japan, the first one I bought was 450.00 + 150 .00 shipping, I sold the stock turbo for 150.00. For that price, DOHC, and many years newer technology it was an easy decision.
I've thought about a Skyline motor but, (not so much now, but back then), parts availability and the price scared me away from that. Even now if I went with a different inline 6 it would be the 2jz-gte from the last Supra. Larger displacement than the Skyline and parts at any NAPA.
There are kits for the non-turbo VG30 (SOHC V6), the motor in older 300zx's, Pathfinders, etc, but the the location of the turbo on the boosted motors makes it very hard to do (wants to take the place of location the steering box). There are only 2 out there I know of and one of those has had the front suspension converted to double a-arms, very much a one of a kind. I have a friend that has the last gen 300zx twin turbo engine in it, www.datsuns.com (http://www.datsuns.com). I think his engine is a nightmare to work on in comparison to mine, but he managed to get it stuffed in there.
A lot of guys use the SR20ET which is a 2 liter all aluminum turbo motor from the Japanese version of the 240sx, it makes for a nice clean swap.

It's funny, you never know you love's the 510. Paul Newman raced them occasionally and IIRC had one for personal use.
Here's a link to a Datsun/Nissan meet I go to every year. Pics in there from the track day, autocross, and the car show. Mostly 510's but some Z cars (old and new), roadsters, etc.

Maybe a stupid question, but does not a straight 6 make more low end torque than a typical V6?
I was consitering a turbo straight 6 for the next project. I was thinking of using the Ford 300, but maybe I should reconsider a more "high tech" straignt 6 instead. Hummmm.... Maybe not. After "Tokyo Drift" people will think I got the idea from the film. Converting a basic Ford truck motor into a stump pulling, high reving, fire breathing monster may be the way to go.

Do it Bob that would be SWEET! Check on the 4.0l 4cyl that made like 1000hp I think an aus company build that one.
Usually yes. The newer V6's are doing pretty well. Alot of the PRO-Import teams are developing the v6 motors and some are running them. They have found the limiting factor on the I-6 being the head design and flow.

Well, this is Aussie only but I think it meets your needs. 4 liters, DOHC, 320ish hp and torque at only 6psi. I'm sure there is more info out there, here is a link an older Car & Driver article on it. From what I've read everyone raves about the torque these motors make.

Tell me a bit about that data panel if you have time.
I got it from these guys
http://www.chetcodigital.com/
They have many choices, mine is the 395.00 gauge without a case as I wanted to mount it in the dash myself. They can program it to work with any senders you have. I'm using VDO senders for all the oil/water parameters and a Dakota Digital sender for the vacuum/boost. Customer service has been good for me. They will reprogram the unit for free if you change senders or give you the software to do it yourself if you feel up to it.
how much does it weigh have you checked?
I weighed it a while back and it was around 2750 lbs. Heavy for a 510, light in comparison to most everything else.

Been a while since I've posted an update here. (Hechtrod, I did make one track day in 2008...) Redid the dash and made a new piece to connect the console to the dash. Also the radiator is in the rear, air to air intercooler instead of air to water. Another bumper redo. Here are a few pix, more on my site.

This thing is amazing!! Dare to be Different points out the wazzoo. Love the olive green! Have you seen the F Bomb camaro? possible inspiration... I really like the new airdam, excellent fabbage! Have you thought about side skirts to help transition that airdam a bit?

Can I get some pics of the radiator setup and maybe some specs? My radiator will be rear mounted as well so any ideas I can get are a plus! Nice car BTW. Different is GOOD!

This is probably the most different car on this entire site. I love your details and almost comical sense of building (the cupholder is awesome...where'd you pick that up from?) The paint job is perfect sleeper material. Street fighter for sure.

Great build. I had never seen this thread in my years of poking around here. It is cool to watch it morph through the years. The last two iterations of the air dam are very cool.
HOLY SHMOLY I have always had a soft spot for 510s but dayumn with a Supra motor and ginormous brakes. it looks great, keep up the great work.

Thanks for all the positive comments everyone.
Im surprised that you can fit that wide of a tire in there. Did you have to do any modifications?Yeah, I had to mini tub the rear a bit, can't remember how much. I also had to cut the 1/4 and rear door quite a bit as well. The front I had to move the wheel well/floorboard back and cut the fender in front. Nothing fit.
Have you seen the F Bomb camaro? possible inspiration... I really like the new airdam, excellent fabbage! Have you thought about side skirts to help transition that airdam a bit?Funny re: F Bomb. It's funny but I actually painted my car this color before the F Bomb came out. Thanks re: the airdam. I was just thinking about some side skirts, but kind of at a loss re: fabbing something that long. Maybe fiberglass? Or adapt an OE skirt of some kind.
Can I get some pics of the radiator setup and maybe some specs? I'll try and get some for you. The rad is Griffin's universal 27(?) x 16. I sealed off the cap and have a filler up front. I'm running a Taurus fan, no ducting at this point which has been more than fine for any regular road use. Track days may be different but I haven't been out yet.
(the cupholder is awesome...where'd you pick that up from?) Thanks, that console is from a Mercedes C class. Forgot the year but post 2000 I believe. I had to modify the sides to fit it between the seats, but the guts are all Merc.

I weighed it a while back and it was around 2750 lbs. Heavy for a 510, light in comparison to most everything else.
Holy schnikey there is a lot of stuff on their site. Do you have a model/part number for yours that I can search on?

If you're interested in that gauge I would give you a good deal on it. I can send you some pix and more info on it. PM me if you'd like.

Well I'm only interested if it will accept input from an OBD port.

Good question. Seems like they can program it for any input you want, but I'm not familiar enough with OBDII output signals to know.

That thing is nasty! I'm really diggin' the wheel fitment. Didn't think anything larger than a 15" would look good. You did it RIGHT!

As far as sideskirts, maybe carbon fiber? It looks like you've messed with it before on your intake tube. They could be real simple and square and still match your car well. Seems like it might not be too bad of a mold to make...
but saying and doing are two very different things. Just brainstorming and I've had a recent interest in carbon!
Do you have any video of it in action? On the street or track.

I used to have a link from way back at a very slow autocross. I'll try and look for it. Unfortunately nothing else.
It's been a while.
How's it going?
Any updates?

Thanks guys. I'm going to redo the oil cooler set up up front to change the look, maybe get rid of the bumper or at least modify it to get closer to the body. I had it weighed at PSI when I had it tuned. Was right around 2700 lbs with 51/49 weight distribution, but that was with only 3 gallons of gas. Tank is behind the rear wheels, so with a full tank it's very close to 50/50 weight distribution.

Finally replaced my old alternator after trying to make the pulley system work. Just did the right thing and bought the proper one. 140 amps due to the Taurus fan pulling so many amps. And a pic...80332
