I just wanted to share... a good friend of mine (and fellow XR4TI owner, and builder of several bits of my car) participated in this past weekend's Global Rallycross Challenge Twin Peaks (Seattle) event in his '86 XR4TI rally car. This is the same events where folks like Rys Millen and Tanner Foust compete (in the AWD category) with 2 or more cars on course at the same time from a standing start.

He did extremely well, especially considering how new he really is to rally, that he's only done a few rally events, and that he did it in a 25 year old car he built himself from scratch (and I mean himself!). The heat that appears in the video included 5 cars at the starting line and Sean was able to achieve a very respectable 3rd place in a very competitive field.

You can view the part of the event where he appears (the best 8 minutes of motorsports in a long time! IMHO) on ESPN3.com; just watch from time mark 1:40:40 to 1:48:40 of the vid: http://espn.go.com/espn3/index# (Click the "replay" tab, look for Sat. Apr. 16, then "Global Rallycross Championship).

Some screen captures from the video:

Rallycross is so much fun to watch. Rally America put on 3 events at NJMP last season.

Anyone who hasn't seen this stuff before I seriously suggest looking into attending an event. The drivers are all completely approachable and some of the technology in the cars is amazing, both in the big money teams and the ingenious stuff that the privateers have come up with.

Rallycross is so much fun to watch.
And do! I've done a couple small local SCCA rallycross events in my daily driver XR4TI, and it's a ton of fun.

And you're dead on about the event, the drivers, and the cars/engineering. This is real stuff, that really works, with minimal concern for how "neat" it is or styling. If it's on the car, it's there for a purpose. No poser BS allowed. Stuff like carbon fiber splitters or tow hooks attached to bumper brackets ain't got a chance in hell here.
