Front of the car---69 Camaro---any pics or suggestions? Looking for a clean install, where you got the part, etc-----Sounds like the track I am headed out too is a bit strict on this part so it's time to make the jump and make it a real race car---:2nd:

Doug,

It's self tech and the first time I ran with SV I had no tow hook. That said I got a pretty sweet tow hook prototype from Mr. Quick aka Vince on here. Not sure what he has for the 69 but for the 67/68 it's pretty slick. Its a two piece unit and the hook itself can be removed/installed with no tools.

So here is an earlier prototype of Vince's hook. I understand he has improved the design since. I haven't yet cleaned all the bugs and road debris from my last track day off the car... don't think less of me ha ha ha

thanks guys, the new hook has a round edge to it and a smaller diameter to clear the bumper when you spin it off. Working on the rear receiver for it too. One hook and two receiver brackets. You can buy one or front and rear.

These should be available in May.

welded to the inner bumper extension. Just a reinforced nut, then screw in a ricer tow hook. Used it 3 times, holds up fine.

Ricer hook looks good.. I wonder how strong?

I heard some sanctioning bodies want it to be able to support up to 5,000 lbs.. yikes

I have no bumper.. send me one of your "too large" rejects! lol

I was thinking of making one using one of these.. a plate and a threaded sleeve the right length should do the trick. Should be strong enough:

or

http://www.saferacer.com/rennline-porsche-folding-race-tow-hooks.html?productid=2124

The bracket should be pretty easy... the rear hook is the hard one without cutting a slot in the rear panel like on the OLC car.

There is a company that makes soft tow straps. You can zip tie them out of view, and if you plow it into the weeds, it comes out.

Some kind of stub off of the front frame and the same on the rear frame. Probably on opposite sides. Threads should be metric.

Doug Renner was kind enough to let me work on his car and use it for the prototype "69 Camaro front driver side tow hook".

I have several designs which include the 67 and 68 model years along with a rear mount. In addition each tow hook comes in chromoly 4130, mild steel and/or aluminum. However the aluminum has a lower rating but is designed with a little more Bling.

I also will make custom tow hooks at the request and design of the customer.

Unfortunately, I typically build stuff on a one off basis. Each of my projects are typically hand made and are produced at the customers request. I have a few car related items that could be reproduced in quantity if enough people are interested (sometimes I feel this waters down the artistic approach I take to making things).

So for starters, I present the Doug Renner tow hook. Offered in 4130 or mild steel in a limited run only. A similar version is designed for the 67 and 68 with a slight different cut and bend.

Many thanks to Brett for the offer on such short notice and actually doing it while Chad and I hung around asking him all sorts of questions. Brett had the hook on and off the car more than 4 times to ensure that everything fit spot on and that the eye sat where we wanted it. One of the main considerations was the space between the eye and the bumper---enough clearance was given so that the actual tow "hook", when put through the eye, would have plenty of clearance so as not to hammer the bumper when attaching. Lot's of time was given to the details by Brett and it is a really clean setup. Thanks again brother---you got skills. Still hoping I will not have to put it to the test.

I was going to add some pics, but you've got all of the good ones here already. Thanks again bro---I really appreciate it.

I know this may not fit everyones taste, but I'm displaying this tow hook to show the versatility of designs.

This tow hook is designed with a little industrial, rat rod and vintage look. It is an Aluminum core with two 4130 chromoly sides. Each of the fasteners is a stainless steel threaded insert with bronze nuts on each side (please note that one side does not have the bronze nuts completed shown in some pictures).

It is called "The Racer - Vintage light weight low" and is designed for those who are not running a front bumper.

Enjoy and thanks for all the great comments about the "Renner Tow Hook".

Bummer! But I am interested in a tow hook, which will probably be show than use, but it may get used going to the shop and back on the trailer.

Flash68 is the new owner of "The Racer" tow hook. He should be sporting this thing at the May 15 track day.

Dave thanks for the business and I look forward to building the matching rear hook for you.

Based on what I've seen here, Brett- you know more about what I want than I do. It has to be functional, of course. Removable would also be nice. If you design it to fit '64-'67 models, it'd have a lot more appeal and sales potential. The bumper bolts are pretty easy to access, so that seems like the logical mounting point in front. My wagon (and el Caminos) are different in the rear, so I'm not worried about that yet. If you come up with something, I'd be interested in it. There are simply no good (fab-free) options right now. You have taste and skill...do what you do!

My buddy is building a Chevelle right now. The car is in san diego and I dont think they are able to transport it. But it would be cool if you wanted to work on it. I could get you pictures and dimensions. Unless you wanna make a trip down here.

So for all you So Cal members that have a Chevelle or a Monte Carlo, I need your help if you want a free tow hook. I need to use your car for test fitting. I will make you a custom tow hook so I can make Scott and Douglas a tow hook. Yes... each one will be different in it's own way.

I used a 2006 BMW M5 Tow hook. Off memory it was a M16 thread. I welded a nut to the bumper bracket to screw it into. I had to use it at VIR when my car broke. Seem to work fine.

Track Tested - Tow Truck Approved.

That is one down fall with the tow hooks - as soon as a tow truck driver sees one he assumes that not only is it a tow point, it's also a tie down point...

When Mary and I got pickup up in Southern Georgia the flatdeck driver was shocked when I told him that I didn't think that it was a good idea to use the tow hook as the single anchor point for the back end of the car... he was even more shocked when I told him that using the tailer hitch as a back up didn't make it any better idea...

Yes Sirree Bob!

Brett -- what a badass piece. Man I love this thing. Brett and I were just chatting about how it looks like a chainsaw about 5 seconds before the owner of the orange Z06 came over and said "man that thing is a chainsaw." So it it is now aptly named the "Chainsaw" tow hook. LOL

Brett put a ton of time and love into this thing and it shows. Thanks for making me a killer part (that I needed!) for my car. Very impressed with your talents.

See you in P-town!

Brett,
Hey , went through the entire thread and dig your work. Too bad you wasted your talents on Doug's car!! Haha...just kidding. Doug's car is pretty sweet. Anyways, I am here in Orange County and have a 65 Chevelle that is beating me up. It is a perfect candidate for a hook for your proto-type. Get in touch, I am actually a friend of Doug's and have no problem with using my ride. It is in the reconstruction phase and you cant hurt it.

Let me know.

I used a tow strap from I/O Port. Not as awesome as a steel loop awesome but gets the job done. Velcro keeps it retracted when not in use.

one more to add to the collection. Its aluminum bolts to the stock bumper bolts and weighs in at 1.5 pounds. I may do some styling to it and lighten it, but right now it works and is already light.

^ I would look at tieing that back to the frame, put some weight behind the current configuration and at a minimum it will bend the bumper.

Mine is very simple, a small flat plate with a piece of tube welded to it, the plate bolts to the frame horn and the tube sticks through the valance. The hook is a forged lifting ring with a shank, I drilled through the tube and shank for a hitch pin to make it removable.
