View Full Version : 2nd Generation Camaro Speaker Kick Panels FS (AR)

Speaker Kickpanels
Made of fiberglass, holds a oversize 6.5" component set and clears the parking brake with a little modification :smoke:
Uses the area behind the stock kick panel for the speaker magnet, so you will lose the pull knob function on non-ac and the passenger vent flapper or ac models.
Fits any and all 1970-1981 Camaro or Firebird
$165 shipped a set to lower 48 states

Added kick panels for 67-69 Camaro / Firebird $165 shipped to lower 48 states
Will have the mdf grill blanks, panels, and pinch weld moldings. The kicks will butt against that.
These will need some final prep before covering or painting them like you would any body panel, but hey I'm basically pulling them out of the mold, trimming and sending them out. Otherwise I would be asking double that like the other guys selling similar pods.
These use the cavity behind the kick where the vent actuator resided so you will lose that. To protect the speaker from water draining off the cowl get a set of metra 91-6900 6 x 9 speaker baffles from eBay, they fit inside the opening perfectly and you can get those for $9-12 shipped.

I have factory A/C...and it works...but I'm looking very hard at the Vintage Air. I was going to say that if you were using your factory air, that the speaker for the pass kick panel may not work due to the A/C using that flap on that side.

I am looking into the vintage air also but I am seriously thinking that I may run the car without air.

I will around march or so, wanted to wait until spring time when the weather started getting nice again. The fiberglass cures better when the temps outside are above 60 degrees. Plus I have some much needed work to get done on my personal car too.
Just keep an eye on the posts in the next few months and I'll update it when I replenish stock.
Thanks

ok sounds good, I'm going to have to re-tool my molds, but still shooting for around middle of march (less than a month). I ordered some more pinch weld a week or so ago.
When I do start I'm going to try and make a batch of four- five sets at a time

Hey do you think it would be possible to make a set that has the top narrow channel as well? What have people been doing with the exposed metal after installing these?

Hey do you think it would be possible to make a set that has the top narrow channel as well? What have people been doing with the exposed metal after installing these?
It's possible, but would be a little more difficult to do with a channel. Instead I supply two pieces of pinch weld moulding to cover the exposed metal..it has a black textured finish similar to weatherstripping
It's shown in the pics attached on the first page

I have all of the sets I am going to make done now, I have them listed on the Camaro forum I frequent as well. Not planning on making any more sets as it is getting colder now. These are the last run for a while....I "might" make some more in the spring but planning on buying a new house then and may take up my time. I also do these in my spare time and I really need to get started back on my 71.
Basically what I am saying is what I have on hand will be it for a while, if not indefinitely. So get a set while I have them.
I'll try my best to keep this thread updated as best as I can, just keep in mind as they dwindle down. But I wouldn't wait if your build is centered around something like this. Ready to ship and I will send a tracking number after payment is made. Shipping will run $12-17 inside lower 48 states depending on location. Canada will be a flat $42.75 shipping via USPS.
Right now the current number is :

I am perhaps interested in a set of these. I read through the threads which you linked above, but I didn't notice any comments about the quality of the sound coming from a tweeter mounted that low. It's a little difficult to tell how much the tweeter is 'aimed' at the driver from that position. Can you share any observations?
Regardless, I am pretty interested in a set. How do you receive payment?
1976CamaroGuy
10-14-2012, 06:57 PM
Hi,
The sound quality is fine with the tweeter that low. It does have a slight angle to it. The drivers tweeter has a slight harder angle than the passenger side.
But most tweeters can swivel too for more imaging. This is how car audio systems have been designed for years. Moving the speakers to the kicks to equalize the path lengths to the ears.

Pictures of my set wrapped in vinyl and ready to go into the car. We used some 1/8" Dynaliner that I had leftover from the rest of the interior to 'pad' the surface of the glass, then stretched the vinyl over that. They turned out great!

Here are a couple of pictures of the install. We attached the speaker to an aluminum plate which was screwed to the metal structure behind the kick panel. The kick panel itself just holds the grill.

A lot of things can influence how loud the speakers will get and or / sound. Which jl amp specifically are you using? Are you sending more than 100 watts rms to the speakers?
How about the exhaust system? Is it stock or do you have something with a little rumbled? These cars are inherently noisy, do you have any sound deadening / damping installed? If you have an aftermarket exhaust or cam in the engine your going to need more power for the speakers to compensate for that.
On my personal car I am going to use some pillow stuffing in the enclosure, more for damping the speaker. I did however drill a large hole in the bottom of the enclosure for the speaker to breath, mostly because the speakers we use are designed for infinite baffle like when mounted in the door. I didn't want to seal it completely up.
Hope that helps :)

We sealed mine up with the same 'box' in the back that was shown above. We didn't add the hole though. I did add Dynamat around the box to seal it to the edges. I've only just powered my setup up this week, but I have plenty of mid/low bass. We were able to tweak the crossovers to balance out the tweeter. I haven't driven the car yet to hear how it will sound with outside noise though...

Hey it s me again.
I just thought of using the billow stuffing right before I logged on.
Anyway im using jl audio 700.5 amp
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-oz9FOXfN9UV/p_136XD7005/JL-Audio-XD700-5.html
75 watts to front and rear 300 to a sub, I have no sub yet.
I am now having a hard time installing Ebrake.
Can I just take off?
I know it says you can bend it slightly but How being installed in car still/Car was not running when I tried them

Do you have speakers in the rear? Are you fading them out relative to the front or do you have them amped like the front speakers? The reason I ask is that you'll need the rear speakers turned down quite a bit to provide only "fill" to the rear. If not they'll be overbearing and conflict with the front speakers. This can throw the sound off.
I'm going to use rear speakers in my Camaro but they are just going to be running off the radio....no amp. My front speakers in the kicks and the subwoofer will be the only thing amped up.
Don't remove your parking brake, if it's hitting the grill and you don't want to bend it slightly.....shim it to the right a little with washers at the mounting points. This will get you a little more clearance if the grill is hitting. But most cases it won't unless you have extra thick grills. The parking brake is a PIA to deal with, but I wouldn't take it out.

On those you should have just gotten a crossover for the tweeter. What's the crossover point set on the amp for these? If they can handle it I would go something like 100 hz or so on the high pass and 100 hz on the subwoofer so there are no gaps in the crossover points.

Front and rears are amped, grills are not that deep.

05-14-2013, 04:44 AM
Ok, here's what I personally would do with that set-up, if it were me
1. Bridge the amp into 3 channel mode
2. Run two channels to the front speakers (200 watts rms x 2)
3. Run 300 watts rms x 1 to either a single 2 ohm subwoofer or multiple 4 ohm subwoofers (just make sure your getting 2 ohms at the amp)
4. Run the rear speakers off the radio
The only thing I can see is that you might need to upgrade the front speakers, because even as is, they are only rated at 50 watts rms.

Ok no problem, make sure that you've fitted and trimmed enough off the kick so that it's sitting as flat as possible. Then if the bracket is hitting for whatever reason add some washers behind the actual parking brake bracket where it bolts to the side of the kick panel and shim it to the right to get it off the kick if it's hitting. If that doesn't work, pm me some pictures so I can see whats going on

Hey guys no need to worry about fitting, I found what was the problem , my fault, nothing to do with this product.
When I put in the speaker baffle I did not notice it did not fit flush so it was not allowing the panel to lay flat.
Trimmed it up and now it fits great.

I sold my last set Friday, I planned starting up in the fall with another round. But I have supplies on the way so it may be sooner, the next few weeks. I'll let ya know either way. But to answer your question, they'll fit your car. You'll just lose the fresh air vent on the passenger side kick and the line will need to be capped off.

What size speakers or tweeter? does it fit?
Any depth restrictions?
$165 shipped to lower 48 states
Fits 6.5" speakers with a max grill diameter of 7"....and any size flush mount tweeter
No real depth restrictions, speaker resides in cavity behind the kickpanel.
I suggest using a metra 81-6900 speaker baffle behind the speaker because it fits the opening perfectly and will protect your speaker from the elements. Max depth on that is about 4" deep.
Just let me know, these are ready to ship out - tracking provided

They don't already have the speaker holes cut out, but I can do that for you if you tell me what size cut-out it has to be...I'll have to check and see if I have a hole saw bit that size.
I not sure what you mean modify the rear tray, you can actually use any size speaker (woofer) in the center up to a 10". The grille will stay the same size obviously, but you can put any speaker behind it after cut the rear deck metal.

as for the rear deck, i just ment are you able.to mold one without the current 2 round and 1 square recessed indent
and just have whole panel smooth with 1 outlined shape in center?
But i guess if i wrapped it in vinyl thatll take care of the issue anyways
1976CamaroGuy

I understand, it wouldn't be easy to do a smooth panel with the mold the way it is. Honestly with it being fiberglass you could actually fill in those speaker holes if you didn't want them.

Going pretty good, still working on my car lol, I'll get it done sometime. I do have about a 1/2 of what fiberglass I started with left, but it's whittling down lol

1/2 of the big roll? Yeah man, that's pretty thick fiberglass mat. Didn't take long to dwindle it down a bit.

Hi AJ, They are for either a 6.5" and some 6.75" speakers depending on the grille size. As long as the grille isn't over 7" in dia they will work.
I sold a set I had on hand last Friday, but I have another set I need to finish up. I had planned on having them ready by the weekend. Just let me know
Thanks,
Dennis

does anyone know if the early Camaro ones will fit 68-72 Nova?

I had looked into this, and the 68-72 Nova shares a lot of design characteristics with the 1st gen and googling the kick panels they look identical.

Since these use a pinch weld you have some wiggle room and can do some more precise trimming to fit.
But I can't tell you for sure, maybe someone else that has their hands on both cars can clarify it.
