I know there are a few guys here that have worked in the aerospace industry and some who are just fans of old planes. These are some photos I took a while back during the 100 Years of Naval Aviation show here in Coronado.
The oldest plane here is an exact replica of the Navy's very first plane, or sea plane, can't remember. They actually put it on the water and was planning to fly it but running the engine on the bay was as far as they got.
There were many, many planes that I didn't take a pic of due to camera issues. They tried to get one of every version of Navy planes still flyable for the Parade of Flight. There were many vintage Army Air Corps planes too. Quite a few B-25's, 29's, P-51's, Dive Bombers,......

There were certainly alot of those here. This particular one came into the hangar in the back of a semi trailer.
I really dug the WWII fighters. When the Mustang flew by you could tell it was the bad dawg of the bunch. It sounded like a Top Fuel Dragster amongst a fleet of Prius'.

Is it wrong of me to want to sneak in there and steal that engine in the 1st pic and drop it into a Model T rod? I like a lot of the pre-WWII and WWII aircraft, like pretty much all of them. I'm also fond of any aviation themed automobiles as well. The Laboratoires car is one of my favorites and am still waiting to see someone drop a rotatory aviation engine in an old car to make a WWII fighter themed build.

Cool pics. Some friends (the club I'm in) put on a really cool car show at the air museum in Wichita in September. It is a really cool show cause we get to park under and around all the planes and go into the museum and pilfer there also! Also a couple good bands play too!
So, it almost goes without saying that car guys usually like planes too!
Here is the flier if someone wants to come.

There are also a couple pics on my fquick page.

Just ordered a new flight headset today (Clarity Aloft) and was actually daydreaming a little about how I could use it with the car..... Cars and planes belong together.

Rob McGaffin the other day posted a video on facebook about the old PBS special on the Kee Bird. A B-29 that had been abandoned in Alaska for over 50 years and they tried to get it running and fly it back to the United States but the thing caught fire and sank to the bottem of the lake. Tragic story.

I have seen that twice and it almost makes a true aircraft person cry. Then you have the mechanic that pass away while work on the Keebird. I think it was in Nova Scotia, Iceland, or Greenland.

I restored vintage aircraft for 20 years before getting into the hot rod biz. I will have to post some pics to show a few of the ones I restored over the years. I also own a wood propeller manufacturing business and I think the prop on that gray Hisso powered Standard is one I built, but need to check my old production records to verify.

I was thinking of you, Mike, when I was taking these pics. I knew you were big time into old planes. I have a close pic of the placard of it somewhere. Maybe it tells who re-did the plane and you could possibly bounce that off your records.

It was restored by Frank Schnelling, and I did not build that one from my records. I did build one for Rhinebeck Aerodrome though for this Hisso powered Standard
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
I also built the prop for this SPAD XIII and many more

No doubt that the Standard you did work for was here at one point in it's life. North Island Naval Air Station is the birthplace of Naval Aviation and was actually an Army post before that. It's amazing the history on this little island.
Mike, if you ever come out to Coronado we will put you up in the Hotel Del for a night. My wife is in a management position there and gets a great rate. I'm wondering if they will do a 101 Years of Naval Aviation?

I stil love old aircraft.....33 years in the aviation industry and still going. Not really into modern aircraft all that much, but the old stuff.....way cool!
These are what I used to operate when I was in the Airforce. I consider myself to be pretty lucky to have had the chance to fly the last of the "old school" transport aircraft - DeHavilland Canada DH4 Caribou (C7A for the US Army guys).....twin R2000 Pratt and Whitney radials.....heck of a lot of fun to fly...no auto pilot, no radar....old school, all the way.

I just took my parents to the USS Midway here in San Diego when they came to visit. They have quite a few planes in the hanger bay and on the deck. I'll have to get bck there and snap a few shots for this thread.

If you are ever in the Dayton Oh. area you need to go to the Wright/Patterson AFB. It is an awesome collection of everything, from the Wright Brotheres to current. It will take almost a whole day to do it right. If you do go, make sure you sign up first thing to go on the presidential tour and go through one of the Air Force one planes. It is free too.

Leigh, I'm a pilot also, but clearly not with the experiences you've got! But, coincidentally, my 3rd jump was out of a C7! I'm probably one of the last US guy who jumped from a C7. In the VERY early 80s (like 1980) I probably jumped from one about 5 times. The crazy thing is that I probably never saw another C7 after about '82, but I jumped from C47s since then - though they weren't US! I hate to think just how many hours were on those airframes. Going out the door probably increased my safety dramatically considering the age of the aircraft and the likely maintenance of those particular countries...

This will be the only airworthy P-61. Can't wait to see that. BTW for anyone in the eastern PA area the Reading WWII weekend is a must see. Not just an airshow it shows off all kinds of things. I will be posting more in the days to come.

Engine in the first pic I think was an OX-5, the museum across the street has 1 on display and are working to get another running again. They also have a Nicholas Beazley NB3 an NB8 and a flying flea that the museum owns and currently have a steerman on loan. Apparently Marshall MO was the place to be during the barn storming days.

Yeah, they're all getting really old now.....
I was on a combined exercise in 1984 with US forces, we were tasked to carry a company of US Army light infantry (light....riiiight - never seen anyone carry so much gear with them, lol). We had a training SNCO from US Army Special Forces attached to the infantry company. He'd done a lot of jumps from Caribous at Ft Bragg. I seem to recall him mentioning they'd removed them from service around that time.
