View Full Version : 68 Mustang Coupe | Project 3rd Time's the Charm

Hello all -- My name is JB and I've been reading threads, project updates and nosing around on this forum for long enough -- time for my own build thread.

I've had my 68 Mustang Coupe for nearly 14 years now (since before I could drive) and it's certainly been a long time coming for the build I have planned.

The car has always been a Northeastern US car (being built right in NJ) and now residing with me on Long Island. It was originally Meadowlark yellow, with a straight 6 and C4 automatic. When I purchased it, the body was mostly just a primer gray. The drive train was still all in tact and it ran/drove great as my first car. I had slapped on some American Racing Outlaw rims/tires and had the bodywork done and painted in the purple color seen in the pictures below -- certainly did turn heads. That was the first time I did the car.

For the second time around I decided to make the change to a V8 and manual trans -- so out with the I6 and in went an 88 302 roller motor, holley 650cfm 4-barrel, T-5 5-speed and a 9" rear. I did some additional upgrades like subframe connectors, newer style Mustang GT rims (2001 I believe), cobra 13" disc brakes up front and the autometer gauges. A homemade rack and pinion setup went in as well. Fun stuff -- but not designed and integrated as I would have hoped. I think it was more of a time crunch just to get the car "moving under it's own power" than really creating a street machine.

That is how the car sits as shown in the pictures below. Not really too fun to drive. The steering setup is not properly dialed in or set up with the suspension, the external fuel pump is noisy and doesn't seal properly, the engine is not tuned or as smooth running as I'd like -- and the more I've learned with reading up on with peoples builds and projects on here -- the more I organize my plan of attack for whipping this car into shape to earn the title of pro-touring. I've learned a ton over the past few years (not only on here but in my fabrication business) -- so I think a complete overhaul is in order -- am I crazy? Maybe. My grandfather was a Ford master mechanic for 30 years -- so the "crazy about Ford" runs in my blood.

My dad sure seems to think so -- he keeps trying to convince me to purchase another Mustang to strip down to nothing and build up -- over tearing this one down.:bicycle:

Anyhow -- my "3rd time around" project plans are in the second post & below are some pictures for everyone -- glad to be on here!

Feedback and constructive criticism are always welcomed!

Well not the most thrilling updates -- but at least I'm digging in. Took off a bunch of front end parts (fenders, hood, valence, bumpers -- etc). I need to make the front chassis mount for the rotisserie so they all had to go anyhow.

Included a picture of the homemade rotisserie too.

I almost think the car looks better now than before:rotfl:
Sorry for the terrible phone pics -- hope to get more with the SLR as things progress this weekend :)

Thanks! Yea that's what my Dad kept saying -- "just fix this, do that -- patch this up" he really doesn't get how much of a beast this will end up being -- and how infinitely much easier it will be to drive and enjoy.

Huntington area. What about you?

Cool car! I cant wait to see the progress!
Thanks! I can't wait to see the progress also :rotfl: Love that Falcon thread (yup die hard Ford fan here) -- the Watts link writeup is great -- that's definitely the route I'll be going for the rear.

Got the glass out today, along with the drivers door and a few interior bits.

Just have to pull the motor/drive-line/suspension & interior -- then the real fun starts :twothumbs

I was also able to bolt up the rotisserie mounts I've made and test them -- nice and strong -- should have no problems rotating the car.

A few clearer pictures as promised :)

HAHA yea I agree with your statement AND what everyone else is thinking -- those are gone this time around. They were kinda fun for the years I drove the car everyday -- but not anymore -- strictly a CLEAN looking exterior!

Some more updated pics below (yet the mudflaps still remain somehow )

Got the interior completely out, the whole wiring harness and some other small things.

Tearing up the sound deadening is a pain in the ASS ... and those spots aren't rust, it's a layer of protection paint -- which will all be stripped away anyhow

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/DSC_0007-2.jpg
I am DEFINITELY glad I have a mini tub in my plans -- even before seeing this -- I knew there were some rot spots -- but forgot just how large. This will all be cut out and replaced with new sections and a new mini tub well

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/DSC_0011-1.jpg
I'm a little frustrated at the quarter panels -- I thought they were in better shape or would be better done -- considering I paid someone to do them --- if I only knew then what I know now :nopity:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/DSC_0012-1.jpg
And some more repair spots near the upper door hinge/pillar

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/DSC_0014-1.jpg

I plan on taking off a few more small things tomorrow -- some on the engine -- and then pulling the entire engine/trans/driveline (and yes mudflaps) next weekend --- then it's onto the rotisserie!:fingersx:

Thanks -- glad they will be going as well -- they were fun for their time -- but not anymore. I actually originally got them to keep mud, rocks and other things from flinging all over the bottom of the quarters -- but I have some new ideas in mind for this time around.

Off to a great start. Looking forward to this project
Thanks -- I'm looking forward as well -- so far so good -- my timing is on point with what I wanted, which is to have the car 100% gutted and on the rotisserie by the end of this month. Almost there!

Well nothing really thrilling to update -- but at least there is continued teardown progress. Got a bunch more of the sound deadening removed (nearly all gone now) -- removed lines, wires and linkage to the motor and trans -- they are ready to be lifted out!

Also gutted out the trunk -- battery and box are gone, wiring, trunk decklid hinges, fuel cell and all connections.

I'm really looking forward to removing everything rear of the front floor pans to start fresh with clean metal. Hopefully by next month. :yeah:

Yay--motor and trans are finally out! Not much left now -- a few front end components, the rear axle/leafs (all will just unbolt and roll away) and it's time for metal cut & fab work :) My intended goal of having the car completely stripped by the end of April is looking good.

Looks good. What kind of front suspension do have right now in the car? Looks like some type of strut with coilovers. Were you running headers before? What kind of headers did you use to clear the steering?

It was a kind of mockup/quick design setup -- mocked up lower control arms, with an SN95 ball joint and knuckle attached to a 2000 Mustang Strut. The coilover kit was a generic one with QA1 springs. The brakes are Cobra 13" setups.

The headers were generic 5.0 shorties -- nothing fancy -- they BARELY cleared the steering link.

I plan on an all new setup this time around -- more of a takeoff from the newer Mustangs -- fabbed to fit the 68 frame rails. :)

Thanks guys -- I've been slacking on updates and progress to be honest. I opened a new shop last month and it's sucking down ALL of my time.

We're finally catching up though and I expect to start back in on the project soon...planning on buying a sandblaster to start stripping things down :)

JBCO

Well the new shop I mentioned has literally taken up a ton of my time. The past three months have been crazy -- I've had little time to do anything but get that place moving and really functional.

Now that it's more stable...back to the stang :headbang:

I sourced a 345/30-19 Nitto Invo rear tire for mockup...and decided a mini-tub wasn't for me. The car has seen nothing but northeastern weather all of it's life. The original rear rails, inner wheel wells and frame structure were pretty much roasted...so I figured I would start fresh.

I ordered a set of brand new mandrel bent rails, 2x3 square tubing and got the car back on level ground with jack stands (I was tearing it down on the rotisserie).

Today I spent a few hours cutting out basically the whole rear section, it actually wasn't too bad. My next step will be to go back, clean up all the edges and remove any extra spots of metal that would otherwise be replaced.

After that's set and done, the rails can go in nice an parallel for better tire clearance and strength all the way back. I'm still debating on removing the outer wheel wells -- but they have a taper on them that I hate...I really want this tire to sit as flush as possible to the quarter lip. I'll end up stretching the quarter I think as well.

A few shots... happy Monday :)

The front of what? The car? Or the front part of the rear? I haven't done anything with the front suspension yet -- I plan on doing an AJE K-member w/a-arms setup.

As for the front of the rear suspension, still to be built, I plan on doing a 2x3 crossmember, with the frame rails tied in and a very subtle roll cage tying things together.

I've been putting in some time on Mondays and have made some progress...

Rear rails and flooring are all gone. New center member is in, along with frame rails -- they are all just tacked up for measurement, fitment and leveling. The center crossmember still needs its center hoop.

First couple pics are mocking up the rails :

Thanks -- it's definitely an undertaking that's for sure. The tires are huge for sure. I have 265's on my Subaru STI and I thought they were larger sized...they are tiny trolls compared to those 345's :)

I've actually made some progress in the past couple weeks-- just no time to update this thread.

The outer wheel wells are all cut out, and everything behind the quarter panels is cleaned up and epoxy sealed. The rear end is all measured for and I should be finalizing that order today...I expect it to ship by early next week. Once it arrives I have to weld on all the 3-link brackets and such... so I should have this car back on the ground and rolling around before Thanksgiving, or at least the end of this month.

I still have to get some DOM tubing and start the hidden roll cage too, at least some of the back components to keep anything from flexing before all the tins go back in.

Hopefully I'll have pictures soon.

Finally making some moves :)

The rear and components are starting to arrive this week (housing, axles, DOM tubing/brackets/rod-ends). I plan on tackling the mock-up and link positioning this coming Monday. I've decided to stick with a 3-link design and a watt's link setup for centering. I expect the rims in a few weeks as well :jump:

Rear housing is a Chris Alston's Fab 9 w/backbrace kit & Strange Street ST 35-spline Axles

The pics don't do everything justice, this stuff is beefy.

A few more updates this week :)

I spent a little time welding up the back braces onto the Fab9 housing -- I've gotta say, this thing looks bomb proof. I really can't imagine breaking this.

I set it up on legs after a good amount of time measuring, re-measuring, checking pinion angle (approximate angle that is, in relation to the chassis) and then measuring once more :) From here I should be able to dial in my locations for the 3-link brackets, tack them in place and then final weld them with the rear taken off the car. I'll take measurements for the arm lengths as well.

The lower links will be 1/8" wall DOM tubing, with sturdy rod ends. The upper/center 3rd link will be .25" wall DOM tubing with heavy duty rod ends (this link will be absorbing all of the torque).

Let me know what everyone thinks so far -- I could really use some feedback. Overkill on that 3rd link tubing wall sizing ??

Hope everyone's Thanksgiving was nice.... A couple more items arrived...mainly the link brackets and rod ends. The lower link brackets have 3 hole settings for dialing in anti-squat and are a 10 degree offset so I can push them outward just a bit -- primarily for more stability.

The rod ends are hardcore too ... chromoly all around. Since there's only one 3rd link (the upper one), as I know I keep pointing out, I went a little extra heavy duty on it. This really may be overkill though. I snapped a pic of one next to a $5 bill ... yikes...

I should be doing arm lengths and tab placement mockups tomorrow -- with any luck I'll have this car back on the ground within 2 weeks :)

Believe it or not, for the massive thing that it is, it's fairly light. I'd say around 4 pounds or so. haha -- Not thrilled about adding un-sprung weight, but the strength will make up for it :)

I could be wrong, but I actually think the 3 link sees a little less load than you think. Remember it is being pulled in tension when the pinion tries to rotate at the same time it is "pushing" the chassis forward. To a certain extent these forces are cancelling each other. I believe it actually sees 1/2 the load of one of the lower links, but can't quite remember my theory. Either way .25" wall tubing is total overkill.

I actually never thought of it as "cancelling itself out" with the chassis push forces to be honest ... good point. My theory or thoughts behind such a beefy 3rd upper link, is that it would see much of the same forces that the lowers would see so it should be double the thickness as it's all alone. Seeing the .25" wall DOM next to the .125 wall DOM makes me feel silly though -- cause it's massive.

The rod ends & components confirm the silliness, as they are just huge. I agree with your statement of total overkill...at least I know it's strong enough.

Didn't get much accomplished today.. was really just plotting my moves for this week and getting a few things for the new tig welder. More updates soon.

Thanks for the feedback everyone...much appreciated and is keeping me motivated.

Haha no worries on the Q's... I'm going with Forgestar F14 19x12 +36mm offset (which I believe translates to around 7.9" backspace -- I don't have the numbers in front of me). I used these measurements (and a lot of others taken 10 times over) to order the correct width rear. The target RWHP is 1000, but that will depend on how far I choose to have my tuner push the motor when dyno day comes along (still a whiles away). The car would be dialed back for street driving anyhow.

Very Nice
Thanks....still a long way to go

Nothing crazy with the updates -- been a busy week at the shop.

I spent time last Monday measuring and re-measuring for the link lengths as well as bracket positions. Then I spent time this week TIG'n everything up. I'm not the prettiest tig-welder, but everything is solidly welded! Everything still needs to be sanded & smoothed out before paint or powder coating.

The lower links still have front and back support sections I have to weld on -- I am setting those up tomorrow as I plan to connect the coilovers directly to the lower link brackets.

The upper link (that big ass one) actually looks more in proportion, now that it's mounted to the rear housing. :)

More updates tomorrow hopefully

Yea it's crazy. I got them from RuffStuffSpecialties.com -- mostly 4x4 stuff, but I wanted stuff that was bomb-proof -- I definitely got it. Their pricing is reasonable and they have a good selection. I still cut and re-positioned some of the parts I got from them, but that's what fabbing is all about.

I got my watts link in this week and mocked up all the tabs/brackets for that. The holidays put a bit of a strain on the car time -- so hopefully in the next couple weeks I'll have everything welded, coated and installed on the car so it can roll around. :)

Honestly, it's really great. I'd rate them at 9.5 out of 10. No blems, pits, scratches, dips, scuffs or anything of the sort. For the price and really fast turn around I got (epic thanks to Paul @ Howey Industries) I'm definitely happy. The fronts should be on order by next month once I measure them up.

I hope to have some pictures up with them on the car and the car on the ground by next week...I hope...

Okie.... scuffed and coated all of the raw metal in the rear -- rails, brackets & exposed areas today. I laid down a black encapsulator/etch and then black epoxy primed. I of course still have all the tin work to add -- but this keeps things from getting super rusty and making double the work down the road trying to bend/flex and get into the corners and hard to reach spots with tins installed.

Tires are mounted on the rims....they look sweet. I did a quick mockup with one side at approximate ride height. I must say, I think I achieved that "modern muscle" look with these. Aggressive, but not over the top and clean/classy -- as muscle should be.

I'll be assembling the rear & 3-links this week for an installation and roll around on the ground next week :)

What do you guys all think ?

'Flame I was wondering what your plans are for front tire and wheel sizes? I recently purchased, no stole, a '67 notchback that the guy had replaced the entire front sheetmetal, firewall forward, installed an alston backhalf setup and full subframes with x-bracing before he ran out of cash. I'm wanting to go with at least a 10" wide wheel on front and do the 345/35 rear tires like you have chosen.

Your project mirrors (so far) what I have in mind for mine but am wondering if you've given front tire sizes any consideration yet.

My goal for front tires is in the 285 range or so. I need something so the 345's don't push my steering too much and make controlling the car through turns an issue.

I would also like to get a 10" wide wheel up front. It's doable, but my issue comes in with offset. The Forgstar's (while they have a variety of ranges) -- are a little more positive in the offset for front rims than I would like.

I haven't quite figured out how (I just have to dig up some more time)-- but whether it be a spacer with longer studs or something of the sort -- I'll get some beefy tires up front as well.

I actually assembled the rear in the car today and got it back on the ground! All of my measurements were dead on with the exception of the watt's link connectors (the outer links that attach to the rear housing). I just have to space them farther back from the rear center line and add side braces.

I have pics...I'm just shot from the 6+ hours in freezing windy conditions working on this thing...I'll try to post tomorrow/Wed :)

Thanks. The front rims will be the same style as the rears. Only in an 18x10 instead of a 19x12. I'll likely be installing extended studs in the front knuckles and running a 1" spacer to keep them pushed out. My goal is a 285 tire or so at this point. Sorry I never saw this -- just goes to show how out of it I've been on this car.

I've had a lot going on the past 6 months with the shop and such -- it's kept me from really diggin' in on the Mustang. The cage is 99% done -- I just have to go back over all the welds and make sure they are set to go -- that's really about it. No pics of that update unfortunately -- gotta work on that.

I did bring back some winter projects to work on while the garage is freezing :( -- namely the gauges and some trim pieces.

Let me know what everyone thinks -- custom flat black paint with gunmetal metallic bezels. All Autometer Phantom gauges (I have more for the center console too) with custom Ford Blue vinyl decals I cut :)

Long overdue reply - sorry for a massive time lapse guys. A lot's changed since my last posts and updates. The car is in hibernation at the moment.... Originally from Long Island NY, I recently up-and-moved to Colorado - the car has yet to follow (in storage). It's been a total change, I drove out here as well (a long 3 day haul). While I won't ramble on with personal stories, pending how some business plans work out this year I really hope to transport the project out here to work on.

I'll update in the next couple days with where I left off mid-summer (just before packing up and moving out here). I made some decent progress in the first half of 2014...engine bay is cut and prepped, AJE complete front end is in (HUGE improvement) and most of the rear tins are done and sealed.... and it's onto some other phases.

More soon ;) ;)

Man, I'm glad to hear you're still moving forward, hope you have good luck getting the car moved so you can work on it!!

Thanks. I got to a good stopping point when I left NY - so I'm confident picking it back up (whenever I get it out here) will be straight forward. I wish I snapped more pics, but between packing and planning the drive I neglected to do so. I'll see if I can dig up more than what's below.

The bay notch went great - much more straight forward than I thought it would be. There's a TON of room in there now - and while a 5.0 Coyote motor still looks tempting - I'll likely stick with the 351W setup (hopefully stroked to 408) with a clean EFI setup.

The new rack along with the AJE K-member and suspension is SO clean and solid. No guesswork, no messing around - everything bolted together nicely and fits really well in the vehicle. The geometry looks great as well.

The back tins all went in pretty well also - I have to come up with a "backseat" option (or mainly some sort of finished look as the back seats NO longer work in the vehicle - which I'm fine with. The same goes for a trunk lid setup. The rear tubs are so large (to accommodate the 345mm tires) I have to move the hinges inward and come up with a functioning piston configuration. Any thoughts ?

More soon hopefully... :)
