Can someone please clarify the proper placment of an in-line fuel filter for a carborated car. I have a 68 chevelle, with a mechanical fuel pump and an electic pump on a switch as a backup. Typically I never use the electric pump so the fuel passes right throught it. I''m switching from a sumped gas tank to a stainless steel tank with a RobbMC 1/2 fuel pick-up unit. These units don't have the "sock" filter in the tank that an OEM does so they suggest an inline filter as an alternative. I assume that I can put the inline filter in front of the electric fuel pump but some people have said that would mess with the pressure inside that gas tank and would not allow it to vent properly. Also I do not have return line going back to the tank. Can someone please confirm the proper placement of an inline filter for this setup. Thanks.

Most people use two fuel filters. One before the pump. Normally around a 100 micron. Then another closer to the carb/injectors. For a carb system a 40 micron is usually sufficient. For an injected car a 10 micron is what most people use.
This is what I have found from reading posts on this and other sites. I just ordered a 40 and a 100 micron filter from RobbMc. Nice compact filters and haven't heard anything bad about them.

This was my understanding as well. One pre-pump, one post that's closer to the carb itself.
