On numerous occasions, I have mentioned Chris Buttera's "Novette." He adapted the complete front and rear suspension clips from an '84 Corvette into a '64 Nova. Awe inspiring build, IMHO.

I remember being in my junior year in high school, fantasizing about building a machine like that. No, I have not been able to build such a car yet, but it has stuck with me about 30 years later!

I would argue that yes, this was THE Pro-Touring car of the 80's.

I was involved with the Car Craft / Hot Rod Special events and Newstand specials back then and had been around when John and Chris first built their 69 Camaro with the shortend injector stack under a cowl hood. That car was something that Chris enjoyed but John wanted to do something different, leading to the Novette.

Lil' John Buttera was someone way ahead of his time!
Building some of the first set of Billet wheels before Boyd,
Building Dragsters and Indy cars from his garage,
Designing and helping Centerline Wheels get off the ground
Making one off Billet parts and helping take street rod builds to a higher level.
He was also the father in law of NHRA's Ron Capps.

Please tell me you have color pics of the Camaro? I fell in love with that car while in H.S.

I would have expected nothing less from John Buttera.

I remember it all too well, so well that I did the same thing basically to my Camaro. It was an amazing car for the time and it was simple and clean. I was always impressed with John Buttera because of what he turned out of his shop with such simple and basic tools.

When John was asked how he made the first billet aluminum rear view mirror he said "I just cut away everything that didn't look like a mirror".

I wound up owning a 64 Nova 4 door 6 cylinder car because of the Novette . I was young and HAD to have a Nova regardless of the extra portals . 14 years old and 200 dollars lighter I was the proud owner . It never became anything other than my daily driver and eventually a parts car for its 2 door brethren but it was my first car because I was in Love with John Butteras car .
