Due to some unfortunate circumstances I have to build another carhttps://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif Some of you already know my silver 64 Chevy II this car is going to basically be a re-body, but with lots of upgradeshttps://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/03/gr_wink-1.gif My goal for the car is to have a legitimate street car that I can drive to the track and click off some 8 second times and try to have some fun at some pro-touring events. Anyway, here is the car I'm restoring/modifying. You gotta really use some imagination to realize it will actually be a cool car when I'm done putting my treatment to it.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

First step is to the lift bay for some dismantling

Cutting out the stock frame rails and installing some 2x3" mandrel bent rails. I'm going to leave my self room for plenty of tire out back.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Setup the rear frame section on my layout table and welded it up before installing in the car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Made some front spring pockets that slide up and around the frame rail and crossmember with adjustable holes so I can get the ridehight perfect.

Ok, backhalf is done, time to make some one off subframe connectors. The Chevy II's have a 4 bolt flange that the front subframe bolts to. I bent up some chrome moly and made the connector go from the 4 bolt flange for the front end, down through the factory frame rails, to the front leaf spring pocket on the rear frame.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Ahh, the new one piece floor pan in the background;)

Now I can cut the floor out and get the outriggers in for the cage.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Now it's off to the DC Performance in MD for the cage work. He did an outstanding job in half the time I could do it in (and half the wasted pipe lol)

One piece A-pillar bars through the dash and back to the main hoop.

Got her back home. Next project is to install the floor and get her up on the rottisserie. Here is my 1 piece floor pan that I had to cut in 2 to make it fit.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Got that all done and the car off the lift and on the rottisserie. I picked up one of the new Aeromotive fuel cells with an in-tank eliminator series pump, so I gotta weld some brackets to it and make some mounts in the car. Welded in some 1 1/4" CM tubing just in front of the cell and I'm using the rear crossmember for the rear mount.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

welded some aluminum angle to the cell

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

mounting studs tig'd into the tubing

Here's were I smoothed the firewall. I want to set the motor back in the car 2" so I made a notch for the pass. side to set in. The drivers side is where I got rid of the factory wiper mounting crap.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Had to replace a rusty panel

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Here you can see the factory wheel tubs. They are next on the agenda

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

little bit of mini tub action (not so mini though)

Thanks. My kids love spending time in the garage. It does slow down the progress a little, but it's well worth it. At ages 3 and 4 they can identify most hand tools.

Thank you! I am a member over there, but I'm not a big fan. I posted on there trying to give someone my stock rear framerails that I cut out and steve erased the thread saying it was considered a classified ad, even though I was trying to give them to someone. Sucks when your trying to help someone out and your treated like a scam artist.

Wow, looking good, so much fab work complete! Are you going to dip the car once the welding is complete?

What are you going to do for a dead pedal with the turbo downtube in place? I assume the car will be an auto tranny based on the single pedal?

Josh, I blasted the car actually. Dipping would have ben way easier though! I'm planning on making a piece of aluminum with standoffs from the floor that will cover that area from the exhaust bump outs over to the kick panels on both sides. Should act as a heat barrier and a nice foot rest. You are right I'm running a th400 right now, but I'm tossing around putting a 4l80e in it. Just not too sure yet.

Got a little update, after blasting I hade some rust to chase around. So I spent the week getting that done. Got the rear quarters, just in front of the rear tire, modified for the larger tires. Pushed the car back outside and blasted it again, this time a little more agressively. Then today I finally got some epoxy primer on her. Even though I have a long road ahead it feels like I really got something acomplished by getting the primer on her.

Looks awesome! You gotta polish those compressor covers to keep up with the rest of that gorgeous engine. Here is the guy I use: http://www.mirrorfinishpolishing.com/ He's been doing Precision turbos and everything else you can think of for years and his work is insane. He can make factory cast metal parts look like chrome. And no, I don't get any kickback on this, totally unaffiliated, just a recommendation is all...

Did you get the regular or DBB 67's?

64LS1Nova
03-29-2011, 05:27 PM
Thanks for the link HiBoost! I'll def. check him out. I got journal bearing 67s. I just don't see the dbb being worth the money for me.

Thanks, I'm went with polished. I'm not a big fan of chrome on wheels. Never seems to hold up well. I'm hoping to keep a style similar to my old car with this build.

The rear

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Once I get the rear in there for mock up I can install the chrome moly rear anti-roll bar.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Today's project will be turning this into a rear parachute mount that's hidden behind my tag. Gonna put a flip down rear tag bracket on so I can slide in the chute. Sucks, cause I'll prolly never use it, but I need it to be legal.

Got the chute mount done. It was less of a project then i had thought. Since I ran a 1/8" plate across the back of the car to tie the frame rails in I was able to weld to that and a crossmember and have great lateral support.

Yes I am. Ron S. let me borrow his Jig to narrow it. Your right about the color, I have abandoned the color above but the one I'm going with is a different shade of the same color. It has more orange in it. So far choosing a color has been the the hardest part of the build for me!

I'm not 100% yet, but I have a 4l80e and a th400. I ran the th400 in the other car and didn't really feel like I had to have the overdrive so I will likely go back to it.

Darn it...I was thinking the same thing on my build because I just felt like I probbaly wouldn't need the OD but I decided to throw a built 60e behind my car with the turbo motor...not sure how long it will last but will likely get replaced with the 400.

Looking great, Frank!

hey frank was just over at steves and seen this color nova i like it to

That color does look good! The color I chose is actually on the new Jeeps. It's called Mango Tango I believe.

excellent work - burnt copper orange - - wow! that will be hot -- looking forward to the finished project and the road to get there

Thanks!

Those 60's are a great tranny at the right power level. The 400's are just bullet proof and have some great trans brakes available for them.

Made some good headway this weekend. Got a huge dent in the body work done. Aside from fitting up fenders and hood, the car is ready for paint!! Got some finishing touches done on the chassis. Installed the rear Anti-roll bar, welded on some gussets for the chute mount, and welded on the tabs for the rear leaf spring sliders.

Had to mock up the axle tubes in the car to be able to figure out where to mount the rear A.R.B.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Used the old wheels to make sure the center line was good. It felt good to see a wheel and tire under the car even if it was temporary!

Finally got to put some paint on the car!! Even though it was only on the frame it still feels like a major acomplishment! My plans for the bottom are having the frame rails/tubes all gloss black then I'm going to mask them all off and do the sheet metal with a flat black truck bedliner.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

If I ever get this car done I'll give the frame of the GMC the same treatment. That frame has been a sore spot with me since I got it.

64LS1Nova

I'm going to lift the body up, prep it and paint it with the single stage urethane. It has some kind of undercoating crap on it now that is off in spots etc. I wanna get it before it starts rusting any more. Also gonna spray the cab with the truck bedliner to help with the road/tire noise and stone chips.

Thanks Dave. The long and short of it is I banged up the silver car on a back road assin around. I'm gonna fix it, but with all the things I wanted to change it was easier to build another car and do the chassis work I wanted to. The car did have a T-56, but it got promptly swaped out when I did the twin turbo setup. I priced out the clutch I was going to need and decided the stick wasn't worth the hassle.

Well after 9 straight hours of taping/masking and most of a 30 pack I got the bottom of the car officially done! Masked off all the previously painted frame rails and rockers and sprayed truck bedliner on all the sheetmetal. The pictures don't really do it justice, it looks way better in person.

Here's a little update guys. I haven't been working on the car as much as I'd like to but I got some odds and ends done anyway. I spent a ton of time working with these billet hinges to make them work. Got all the front sheetmetal fitted up, and final blocked. Here are some shots of the hinges and what I had to modify to get them to work.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Here is the problem I was having. The hood would not go down in the back because the hinge was hiting the cowl.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I ended up having to notch the cowl for to give the rear arm clearance to lay back down over it.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Bolt in my AZZ!!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

That still wasn't enough and I ended up having to clearance the rear arm on those high dollar hinges.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

That's all I got done. I'm hoping to get some serious mock up done this week. The car is getting painted the last week of this month. Once it's painted I want to be able to just bolt everything together. well in a perfect world anyway. lol

Thanks for all the kind words guys! Except for yout BanditDave:lol: That really keeps me motivated to plug away at it!
Had a good day today, got the new core support all cut up for the intercooler. Also got the new mounts done for the radiator. It is really starting to look like all the effort to set the engine back 2" was worth it now. I gained a ton of room between the radiator and the engine. That should help the cooling fans flow alot better and give me ever better weight distribution.

All this stuff is just roughed in so don't be too hard on me. As I take it back apart for paint I will smooth everything and correct some clearance issues.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Welded some angle on the bottom of the radiator to mount to the frame with rubber isolators, then welded some 1" bar to the top to grab the core support.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Check out all this clearance! You couldn't drop a wrench between the radiator and engine before.

Thank you! My previous car got in a fight with a pile of dirt due to driver stupidity. I did not have meth on the old car. I ran pump gas and kept the boost around 14psi. I was getting close to maxing out my injectors so I didn't go any higher. I anticipate being able to get around 20psi out of this setup.

Alright guys I need a little help. Long story short my wheels never got finished. So I'm back to square one with the wheels. Seeing the car and what I'm looking for can you guys make some suggestions for me. I'm planning on sticking with the 18x12s for the rear and 17x8 for the front.
I did order a set of 15" drag wheels to get me rolling in the meen time.

I finally got back on the car! Whew did I have some pent up energy to get rid of this weekend! I didn't get to work on the car for over a month and a half due to my work schedule. Here's what I got done this weekend.

While I was at work the painters came over and got the wetsanding and buffing knocked out. Wow what a difference! Can't really tell in the pics but in person it looks super deep and flat!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Track wheels came in! So I got the tires mounted up and made a mock up rear so I could get a perfect measurement to narrow my rear.

Proportioning valve for the power steering? That's the first I've seen one aftermarket. I've seen and worked on GM SUVs' with their variable assist system which is computer controlled. Is the valve your using because of the system your using (pump/rack combo) or other reasons?

Very awesome build. Very inspirational. Thank you for sharing w lots of pics.

64LS1Nova
10-25-2011, 11:11 AM
The valve is more due to the pump/rack combo. I'm using the LS pump with a rack from an 03 Mustang cobra. Right now it is very sensative and doesn't require much input. It is too touchy for me. I'm hoping this valve fixes that for me.

It's been a while since I did an update. Holidays are rough on garage time around my house with 3 little ones. As of right now the outside is 99% done. Just need to put on some new headlight bezels when they come in. I Don't have anything done on the interior, but most of the wiring is now done. I lit it off for the first time this weekend. It felt sooooo good to hear it running again!

Here is the new rear getting setup and pinion angle set.

Rear suspension. Check out the Crossmember. When I measured to make it I used a Dana 60 for my measurements, now that I switched to a 9" the pinion is lower and the driveshaft hits the crossmember. so I had to cut it out and weld in a loop.

I'm not sure what to expect. It was at 975 before with moderate boost. This time it has a bigger cam, bigger turbo's, bigger injectors, and Meth injection. It should make 1200 without sneezing, but with my luck it won't make any more power than before. LOL

Its an f-body pan. If you already have a truck pan I would just just cut a couple inces out of it then add some capacity to the front of the sump. there is also a ls swap pan that fits.

Also got the wheels and tires on the car I'm going to be running! I had such a hard time picking out wheels, luckily I love the way they look on the car. I did go on the maiden voyage with it too. Took a quick ride to the gas station and back. I need to get a front end alignment before I drive any more, but it felt great and I got some much needed tuning done. So far this Holley system is a dream to work with.

Well guys I got to put some miles on her this Saturday. Once I started driving it I couldn't stop! Ended up putting 84 miles on it. Tune is pretty much done. I'm loving the new Holley system! I have some boost control issues to figure out, but besides that she's a beast at only 5 psi it feels like it did with 10+ before! Between the 67s and the new cam, It feels like a different animal! Of course I'm sure some of that is just my butt dyno being off from not being behind the wheel in a while.

All I really have left is some easy odds and ends like interior door handles, etc.
Here are some pix of the center console that my buddy Ron built for me. I still need to make the flip up arm rest, but the main part is done.

I'm pretty certain the leafs should hold up fine. I liked some of the aftermarket rear sections, but none of them looked to be 1200hp proof.

Really turned out nice! Will we see you at any events this year...Run through the Hills?

What did it run before the accident, mid-9's?

I am going to give it a try this year. I have a few goals to accomplish first though. One is to make it through the O.C. car cruise and the other is to run in the 8s and figure out my suspension for the drag strip. Once that's done, I'll give the corners a go.
It went 9.32 @ 152mph with the old setup.

Last week we had a blast at Ocean City car cruise. It is the biggest collection of bad ass cars on the east coast. The family and I got alot of cruisin in! Speedway Motors picked the car as thier favorite of the show! I can't tell you how good it felt to be selected at such a big event! Here is a pic of my oldest standing with the trophy.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I was waiting to hit the track till after that show. So today I went to Test &Tune at Cecil. I wanted to work on getting the car to half way hook up. Overall it was a big sucess. I was pretty limited in what I could do since I was running off the wastegates. Holley hasn't finished thier boost controller software yet. But I was able to lauch off the transbrake @ 5-6 psi and dead hook. Here are a couple of video's.
Keep in mind the max boost I could run today was 11psi so the numbers I ran are not setting the world on fire. But I am very pleased with the numbers at such low boost!

Thank you! The camera man and I thought it would barelly squeek in the 9s with the conservative tune and boost level so we were both pretty suprised to see that run. lol
I'll be going back toward the end of the month to crank the boost up around 20psi or so where the turbo's will be much more efficient. I am hoping to get her in the 8s that way it sits, then put my 15" wheels on and see if I can scrape up that back bumper:cheers:

Well, She's all loaded up and ready to hit the track tomorrow. I got the new ECU from Holley today and they finally sent me the boost control! I still have some work to do with the boost control, but I have it close enough to finish at the track.

Not a good day at the track guys. Had major carnage on the first full pass. At about 150mph it spit the driveshaft out. It felt like something exploded in the car! Luckily I was able to keep control and not smash it up. Worst part is that I was on track for an 8 second pass and I was only up to 17psi! It spit the shaft around the 1000ft mark and I was on the brakes hard. It went 9.15 @ 129. Best part is I got it dialed in to a 1.36 60ft with the 18" wheels on it! I'm very happy with that. I should be able to post a vid soon as my buddy sends it to me.

DAMN, a 9.15 on the brakes?!

What happened to the old car? I saw a couple mentions of accident, but didn't see anything else.

Car looks killer, I could not imagine that colour looking good on the car, before actually seeing it, it suits the car VERY well.

I am very thankful for that. As the track officials were getting ready to tow me off the track the guy was telling me that most failures at the big end of the track don't result in a controled stop. It was strange, but all 4 of the initial resoponders commended me for keeping it straigh and getting it stopped safely.

Once I got it home on the lift last night I found a bunch of damage. Unfortunately It looks like this was all caused by a rear driveshaft balance weight that had a bad weld and came off at high speed. Here are the pic. Trans is busted into 3 peices and hanging by the converter and rear mount, high dollar rear shocks are busted up, and floor pan in pretty banged up. All repairable but it just pisses me off that I spent the extra money to get a driveshaft that was guaranteed to 2000hp and it let loose and caused all this damage!

Thanks, I'm really happy with the color too. It is so hard looking at a little paint chip and trying to imagine it on the whole car. The old car had a mishap involving some mailboxes and a ditch. It was repairable, but I wanted to start from scratch.

My friend had the same damage to his TH350, the theory on that was that the driveshaft yoke bottomed out and started applying an axial load on the transmission to cause the housing to break like that...Sorry to see the damage at any rate, youve got a beautiful car!

Thanks, There is way the driveshaft bottomed out on this one, unless the rear comes disloged and moves forward. Unfortunately it looks like the driveshaft failed and took everything else out. It happens pretty much any time a shaft breaks with a th400 for some reason. Really sucks.

With the 1.3 60 FT's I'm guessing the boost controller is working good that Holley sent back. How was it setting it up and was it hard to get it dialed in at the track. Have you started pulling the parts out yet that got tore up from the drive shaft ? Thanks Garrett

P.S. Video is sick man the car sounds awesome and boy was it moving!!!!

Garrett,
The Holley boost control was moderate to set up. It was simple to setup, but a little combersome to dial in. It has a table similar to your fuel table for the boost solenoid duty cycle. Once that table is close it works perfect. I was set up very conservative when I went to the track. I launched at 7psi and had it ramping up to 17 over 2 seconds.

Right now I have the trans pulled and at the trans shop. I am planning on starting to pull the interior and working on the floor real soon. I already have the new driveshaft sitting here. I don't plan on getting much done with the holidays coming up.

Ended up being picked by GM Performance for their favorite of the show! What an honor! I still can't believe out of all those bad ass cars they picked mine. The Gm representative that picked it said he seen my on the boardwalk cruise with my 3 kids in the back and loved that fact that I drive it and race it.

Congrats on the 8.63 1/4 mile wheelie pass Frank, I knew the car had it in there. I think that's makes you the first P/T car in the 8's, not only in the 8's, but deep in the 8's.

Thanks Ron! I swapped over to the 15" wheels to do it, so I still wanna head back to the track and try to get it done with the 18" wheels. Wasn't much of a wheelie, more of a carry the front left a little, but either way it left crazy hard! 1.28 60ft! If anyone wants to ride along here is a video I took with the in-car camera.
