wave after wave coming in...news says up to 32 feet. Kind of strange watching it unfold live. knowing that people are being killed on live TV. So sad. I hope that if anyone here knows someone in Japan that they will make it through it okay.

Yeah it does seem screwed up to just have choppers there video taping while people die.

keep it on topic guys....

Watching the tsunami cross the fields at such a high rate of speed was heart breaking. Just knowing people were trapped and seeing people get trapped while trying to drive away from it was horrifying. And seeing the large ships that were just tossed on shore is insane.

predicted to be about 5 or 6" along the coast of La Jolla CA. Nothing to worry about here.

Just talked to a friend who's in Honolulu right now. He mentioned they've evacuated the lower levels of his hotel. Apparently the water is currently receding, draining the harbor by a few feet, exposing a lot of coral. Sounds like a surreal experience.

The shots of whirlpools in the ocean are very surreal.

I heard it lasted ~2 minutes. For anyone who has ever experienced an earthquake, that's an eternity.

Its amazing to see the power the earth has sometimes. Those poor people never stood a chance.

Glad to hear! The amateur videos of the quake happening are amazing, I have never seen an earthquake last that long!

Where are you guys watching live coverage? Google isn't being very helpful right now, even in the "news" section.

Scary to say the least....I often wonder if these are signs of something much bigger coming..

Longest one in So Cal I can remember was like 45 seconds and that seemed to last an eternity. I can not even wrap my mind around a 8.9 for 2 minutes, wasn't the one in Anchorage Alaska in 1964 a 9.0 for 4 to minutes....yikes!

Quoted from the AP, "the amount of energy released in the initial earthquake is equal to one month's consumption in the entire US."

I wonder how they measured that?

The Loma Prieta quake of 89 here in the bay area lasted for 60 sec and that was plenty long for me. I saw on the news this morning that when the tsunami hit Santa Cruz, it tossed some boats around pretty good.

Crescent City Harbor getting hit by the Tsunami.

Nothing at all like Japan, but still freakin astounding that there is still that much energy at that distance.

^^^That is amazing, considering the distance it traveled!

A girl from church is from Ooarai, Japan. Which is just north of there on the coast. She said it took her 32 hours before she got to talk to her parents. She said they are ok and the water got to their yard, but stayed out of the house!! THAT is close!!
Amazing!!
I heard somebody say something about a "super moon" or something like that. I didnt do any research on it, but they said that major "events" with nature happen every time that there is a "super moon". Anyone have info on that?

This was the 5th largest earthquake in recorded history... I think they said it shifted the Earths axis and moved coastlines up to 12ft???

And there are no reports of looting in Japan, just pictures of people standing in line.. what a stark contrast to our culture.

I don't understand why there aren't more humanitarian efforts for bringing in supplies though.

There is a CBG off shore doing just that, the USCG and USAF have been flying in/out from Hawaii and Guam. They are being very cautious though due to the issues at Fukushima (sp?)

There's lots happening that you aren't seeing because the lead story is the Nuke plants.

I've got about a dozen buddies that I served with in the CG that are actively involved in moving supplies to Japan. There are gobs of other branches assets moving that way as well. OPSEC demands I not post exactly which I mentioned the CBG because it's already hit the press.
