When I turn the key the car does nothing. It started out with the starter solenoid going bad. Right before I changed the starter the car would act like the battery was dead. I changed the starter hoping it would fix the problem but when I turn the key I still had the same problem. I checked the battery and it was good. Next I thought it may be the ignition switch but when I turn the key all the lights on the dash turn on and radio turns on. I just replaced the neutral safety switch this morning thinking that was the only thing I haven't ruled out and still nothing. The car is a 67 Chevelle SS 396.
Please help. I'm stumped on this one

Checked all electrical connections to the starter?

I've checked all except the back of the solenoid. I'll have to drop the starter to get to them. Also when I turn the key with the head lights on, they turn off completely instead of just dimming. I broke the knob off my multimeter earlier so I can't check the voltage drop yet.

Have you check the ground?

Are the cables new or old? If they are old I would replace them. You may have one that is corroded inside.

So you thought it was a starter problem in the beginning but it turns out not to have been then? You sure the starter is wired correctly? Are we dealing with full factory wiring or have you upgraded?

I had the same problem, my wires were good but one of my connections was misplaced or disconnected. I forgot. But I replaced everything and it was a simple fix. Recheck those connections and make sure it wired correctly. Also try and clean your ends where you connect at. I have heard that too much dirt can cause it not to connect.
GOod luck

First thing, try running a jumper wire from the battery "+" to the coil or HEI power terminal and see if it will start then. If this is a manual car, check the clutch safety switch on the clutch lever under the dash ( my '71 Heavy Chevy did this to me when the threads stripped on mine and it slipped out of adjustment). Check the polarity of the coil if it has an external coil to make sure it wasnt hooked up backwards and cooked the coil.
Here is the engine wiring diagram for a '67:

Thanks ronin, I'll try that this weekend.
tech, it's the factory wiring.
rfalker, I guess I'm gonna have to pull the starter out again this weekend and check it.

I was thinking take the big old screw driver and jump the batter to the S terminal on the starter and verify it will turn over from there.
