Inspired by the trackday build thread, I thought I'd finally "make" one. :)

Picked this car up almost a year ago, April 15th, shortly after my 20th birthday. It was supposed to be done with quick and made a daily driver, but, uh, yeah that didn't go over so well. :seizure:

Anyway, the day I bought this car, it was bare metal with a small block and muncie dropped in.

Everything else was done by me, and I honestly love cars, but have done nothing except change the air box and put new speakers in my old 2001 Camaro, so this all was pretty new to me. Building a car while working 2 jobs and going to school has been quite the pain in the ass, but I'm pretty sure it will be worth it, one day! I know no one is going to read this, so I better get some pics up here.

Specs of the car:
400 Small Block (What I was told, no way to verify)
Muncie M21
Stock Suspension
Odometer states 66k miles
Most of the sheetmetal was replaced, surface rust in random places on the underside floor board, nothing major
LS1 Brakes already installed by me
ZR1 Wheels already installed by me

Plans:
LQ4 And a RS500 sometime next year
Speed Tech Upper Control Arms with Gmod
Hotchkis Springs and Bilstein Shocks for a front drop
Decided drop leaves for the rear (possible Watts link)
Fiske Wheels, Not sure what specifically, all their wheels are amazing.
Iroc Box and Power Steering upgrade once I get a hold of a good box.

Over a year, and I still haven't washed the car!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/03/20110303_171311_491-1.jpg

About 2 weeks ago, the wind was pretty bad, something scuffed against the car, might have been the car cover straps, and messed the paint up pretty bad.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/02/20110220_155152_71-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/02/20110220_155210_531-1.jpg

Insurance helped me out. I talked to my paint guy, I can get the car repainted any color I want for a little more than they gave me. Thinking Hugger Orange, or a custom color sometime next year, the paints already ruined, I'm no longer concerned about it...

At one point, I would have to assume the car was painted lime green...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/03/20110224_165840_498-1.jpg

No fear, getting a Covan dash with Autometer gauges!

As you saw above, the car has OEM ZR1's, because being a broke ass college student, I have to work with what I can, I found the set on craigs for $400 with tires. I had to get larger wheels because I would not run drum brakes! Period! So I searched ebay and got a complete LS1 brake set (plus master and booster) for some $500. Everything except front rotors, which I got from Tobin @ Kore3, who is EXTREMELY helpful.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/03/20101109_181334_208-1.jpg

About to start the car this weekend, I went to fill the rear and tranny with gear oil so I could drive the car to my friends shop, I found the previous owner installed the wrong tranny plug, and it's seized in the bellhousing. Not sure what I can do about that, tried heating it with a torch, tried easy-out, pretty much everything, now theres barely a nub to work with.

So much fun, so little time. I may have to get a 5 speed in the future!

Anyway, I'll try and keep this thread updated, if I wind up with a new tranny, I may be able to follow my build after all.

I just realized I don't have en updated engine bay pic, :jawdrop: I'll rectify this tomorrow! (I think that's a word).

Yep. The rear needed 2" and the front needed 1.5", I looked on ebay and got both for under $120 bucks. I might end up shimming the front more, I haven't tried lock to lock yet.

Thanks everyone. I got an update, a friend of my Dad drilled out the old plug. It was like it was made of friggin' clay. But we got it out, so I'll be running the Muncie for a few months.

That's whats left of the little bugger. Gotta flush the tranny now, got a lot of shavings in there. It's been raining so I haven't been over to the car.

Hopefully, I'll have the car in driving condition this weekend, and I'll drive it to said friend's shop, he has a huge shop with a lift and every kind of tool. :)

Might clean that nasty spray paint off the block while I have it on the lift.

Here's the update:

Today was the day to start it, but unfortunately, I put off way too many "small" things... and they really began to pile up, so I didn't start the car. It does have gas in the tank though!

Pics for today...:

I installed the seats and got the shifter placed.

I need to order .25" spacers for the front, the wheels are rubbing the steering linkage. I'm ordering my covan dash panel and a few gauges as well. Maybe this week... :)

Hey, the car is coming along great!!! im in the same boat as you only being 20 and in college, so i know how it feels to have to wait on the cash to get stuff done.and trust me it is definitely worth it in the end!! i have a few questions for you, are you running any spacer front and rear on those zr1 wheels other than the spacer you need in the front? also how wide are those rims front and rear? im asking because im looking to get some different wheels for autocross and stuff. and the other question is what was your master and brake booster off of, because im running the ls1 brake setup and having no power brakes stinks haha. -Dom

I haven't bothered with a plan, since for the past year~ my goal has been "DRIVE". :)

But I'm thinking along these lines...

LS1 + RS500 (Going the build the LS1 myself with used parts I can find, might go iron block, not sure)
Global West Upper and Lower A-Arms
Hotchkis Springs with Bilstein Shocks All around
LS1 Brakes with E-Brake (Done)

No comment on the rear suspension setup, still configuring that.

Yeah, the ZR1's need 2 inches in the rear (cars not minitubbed), and 1.5" + .25" (i got a 8mm) shim on the front. Of course, this may vary depending on how your front end is setup, mines stock.

The brake booster is from an LS1 car. To get it to mount you need to weld 3 inch steel plates over top of the old mounts, and redrill the mounting holes about an inch down (so the old bottom holes become the top holes). Then weld the old brake pedal rod to the end of the booster so that the rod coming off the booster will screw right in to your old pedal mount.

You can pickup an LS1 master and booster for like less than $40 on ebay, or get a C5 one (basically the same, except the C5 master has the lines coming out on the driver side of the master) for $150+. I'm fine with LS1 car stuff, I had one and I trust it to work fully.

I'll get better pics of the setup tomorrow, if you'd like.

EDIT: And if anyone knows someone selling a 68 grill, TELL ME! Lol.

Forgot about daylight savings, so I decided to go back over and tinker around.

I like this install, only because the only other way I've seen it done required cutting the car. I don't like to cut on her.

With a 1.5 inch spacer in the front, this is what happens...

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/03/20110314_181643_149-1.jpg

Snapped a few more pics, because I was bored.

Trunk mount battery, and an Optima at that!

Finally snapped a pic of the rear, although theres not really much going on back there.

No problem, Dom. Heres my tray, http://www.amazon.com/Taylor-Cable-48000-Battery-Relocator/dp/B000CQ24A6 The one I bought came from a different vendor, it was an offroad truck company, I can't remember the name. I may add a box in the future, but this setup works well for now.

I didn't know if anyone else had done it, I did some research hoping to find some directions to do it, but I ended up winging it. Still came out okay. :)

The only difference in the way I did my install was cutting off the back flange entirely and rebuilding one with the proper bolt pattern. I figured it'd work well (I'm using C5 front late 4th Gen rear brakes), and it'd be cheap since it was already sitting around my garage. :)

I was going to do that, but it went quicker this way. Yours probably looks a whole lot better, but I don't mind the streetfighter look.

Small update. I loomed the wire behind the brake booster, shimmed the wheels (they fit perfect now), and did some more wiring.

SO EXCITED!! :)

AFAIK, it's a stock cam.

On the LS1's the booster would work fine unless the cam was really lumpy (like the car sounded like it would stall). You should be fine unless its a VERY big cam.

Project looks like a great start. I was hoping you might be able to help me with an LS1 brake problem I am having. I am using a LS1 booster like you, but mine looks to currently be only mounted with the top row of bolts (which I may need to fix). The other day my brakes locked up on me and I am trying to track down why. One suggestion was because the rod from the booster to brake pedal was in the upper hole as opposed to the lower hole. However, when I went to lower it, it would not physically reach to the lower hole due to the rod contacting the rubber gromet in the firewall.

Since you have the same setup I was hoping you might be able to help. Were you able to connect to the lower brake pedal hole? If so, do you have any suggestions on why I am not able to? There is a pic of my problem on my website:

I understand that I may have to notch the firewall...?

EDIT: Forgot, I have another pic, this one is probably my favorite... it'll look SO much better with the Hotchkis Springs and Bilstein shocks.

Dan,
The hotchkis springs will make the stance perfect. and as for the fire wall i had to massage mine a little with a rubber mallet so that the hei distributor sits level and doesn't hit. you don't have to make a big dent in the firewall just a small amount. and the good thing is that you don't see it because the distributor covers it. -Dom

All the ways of switching a distributor I saw on Youtube were essentially taking the top end of the motor apart. I didn't want to do that. I pointed the rotor toward the #1 cylinder (front most driverside) and pulled the distributor.

I put the new one in, the EXACT SAME SPOT and now I can't get it to seat all the way in. Any tips?

What size wheels are your front wheels and where did you get them? Mine are supposedly 17 x 9.5s, but holy crap... they're not even close to fitting. I bought the most backspacing I could at the time... can't remember now where they came from though. I'm having the exact same clearance problems you are though.

They're OEM 4th gen SS wheels (ZR1), so 17x9.5". You need to space it out 1.75" from the hub, otherwise it will rub on the steering linkage.

Yeah, the local parts shop didn't have plug wire holders in stock. :(

I got the car started, but I don't have a video, because theres no fuel being pumped to the carb. The plunger on the carb is dryrotted out. I think I might need a new carb. I got a method an old mechanic friend of mine suggested I try before I spend the money. So right now it's running on gas poured into the carb and starter fluid.

But, as soon as that's done, she'll be running!

I hope.

I tried that method I spoke of earlier, it's a no go. I think the carb was just sitting outside for so long theres nothing for the gas to soak into to give me a little better seal on the gaskets.

So, I guess it's time for a new carb. I've been looking at the 725cfm Demon Jrs, anyone have any experience with them? I've been recommended to avoid Holley's because they have to be rebuilt more often.

Ugh, had the Qjet rebuilt, installed it, got nothing. Decided to check to see if any fuel was flowing. It was not. Fuel pump is dead.

Any reason to upgrade to an electric fuel pump? or just stay mech?

69projectKAOS
04-06-2011, 12:09 PM
if you go electric then you have to block off the block etc, and then make sure you have a fuel press. regulator because you dont want to push more fuel than needed. i would just stay with a stock setup until you start doing more work to the motor etc. and it will be cheaper so you can get it on the road and enjoy it.-Dom

Yeah, I opted for the mech pump. But I'm still not getting any fuel. Gonna drop the tank, now.

tommycomfort
04-07-2011, 03:48 AM
There is a good chance that the pickup "sock" in the fuel tank is clogged up. Best bet would be a new pickup/sending unit, but you could probably just remove the gummed up sock to see if it runs. Just a temporary fix for sure.

push rod too short maybe?? is the pump same spec as the old one? maybe the lobe on the came is worn down and not compressing the spring inside the pump enough to make it pump. but like always its probably something stupid that is overlooked. triple check everything.-Dom

Debating a 2 vs 3 inch drop. The bottom of the fender is exact 4 inches off the very top of the tire, I don't want it riding the top of the tire. Hmm... decisions, decisions.... :)

Have you run this motor before? If you have, what changes have you made since the last time it was run?

There are really only a few common things that will cause pushrods to bend like that without abuse:
1. Valvesprings coil-binding (Also check the valvespring internal dampers, they can bind too)
2. Valvespring keepers bottoming out on valve guides
3. Valve/Piston Interference - Though, this will typically bend the valve rather than the pushrod.

What heads are on your motor?

It's a fuel pump push rod. And no, I haven't ran the motor before, but the car was started by directly putting gas into the carb. The fuel pump may or may not have worked when I got the motor.

Oh shoot, I'm a putz, should have looked at the pics closer I guess.

I'd just put a different pump on, or try to see if maybe the pump arm is somehow bottoming out inside the block.

Had her fired up and running! But due to unfortunate circumstances, the carb is missing a few parts from the rebuilt and really badly leaking fuel. So I do think I'll have to go aftermarket. Any carb experts want to chime in? I was thinking a 625-650cfm.

EDIT: Or would a reman Quadrajet do just fine? I think a reman is like $300.

Alright! I drove the car today!

Sad panda update: The trans is definitely messed up. I can't find any gears, and when I do, I have to manually hold the shifter into said gear. It wants to shake and vibrate badly when I want it in gear, clutch feels awful, and lots of other terrible things. Greatest off all, I believe the casing to be cracked, as it has a massive leak, I backed the car out of the garage and next to the engine oil leak was a big puddle of gear oil. Fun on a bun.

I think I'm going to do the T56 swap here shortly, because along with the problems I'm having, I don't really care much for trans linkage, I'd rather have something with more of a smooth shift. Also, I'm not too hot on the mechanical clutch, I'll probably keep that with the T56, because I don't know if I can flat out afford the trans and a hydraulic clutch swap. I need to do a little more research into this, but as of right now, I'm planning on just converting to a mech clutch T56.

But the engine runs great, and it's not that loud with the echo of that big ass shop removed. :)

LS1 brakes work great, I got the booster and everything hooked up, awesome. Just like old times.

Ugh, pulled the tranny today, pulling to motor tomorrow. I need to install a gasket on the oil pan, I'm going to re-gasket everything while I have to motor out, and hopefully clean it up and make it more presentable. I'm going to clean the yellow spray paint off and coat it with cast aluminum paint.

Oh, I also got 99% of the interior done. Only thing missing is the upper portion of the back seat and the headliner.

Going to sand blast and pressure wash tomorrow. She'll be painted cast aluminum and flat black valve covers/intake/oil pan. I think it'll look pretty cool. I'm pulling the steering linkage to sand blast as well. Might throw in an Iroc box while I'm at it... if I can find one!

Nah, the wheels are going shortly. I just gotta save up. I'm going to paint the car white, so I want some Fikse FM7's, and I want the lip painted body color.

Looks like I'm probably gonna go LS, but it'll be a while. I'm pretty much at the bottom of the cash bucket now. Maybe I can squeeze a little more out of this engine. The way I have it now is likely how it's gonna be for the next year. I'm just really bummed about the motor. I was hoping it was an HD 400, so I'd be making 260-280 HP.

I still need a Trans, I don't know if my Muncie is repairable.

I'm gonna go cry in the corner for a little while.

That sucks for sure - but everything happens for a reason - I learned that this is what happens when your dealing with an old muscle car regaurdless of how much planning you put into it - maybe it's an opportunity to find a donor car - something that's trashed with a good drive train that you can drive and make sure runs good -- try craigslist someone somewhere in you area prob has an old beater with a nice engine/trans you can just swap out for now. I am sorry to here about the tranny, where do you plan on getting the six or five speed from

Junkyard, probably. Nothing's been up on Craigslist lately, and I hate buying new parts.

Le Update (French for an update):

The guy working on my tranny found some parts, so he got it back together! Unfortunately, he's currently in jail, so I'm waiting for him to get out so I can get my trans back. I got a body man coming over tomorrow to assist me in getting my sheet metal re-aligned, because I hate these gaps and can no longer look at them.

Once the tranny gets put back in, I'll do the dizzy and carb (don't have to worry about breaking it), and she'll be ready to roll... estimated time... next week, probably later in the week, ordering some gauges this weekend.

Got the car running, everything is perfect. Chasing down an oil leak, and waiting on gauges.

Oh, and lucky me, I bought an electric fan from Jegs a year ago, and it came out to be a FRIGGIN DUD! That was $180 well spent.

Pretty good, sounds great, I still need to get an exhaust, though, I'd likely be the first person in my area to get a ticket for how loud it is. I still haven't DRIVEN it, mainly due to an issue with the gauges. The Autometer cluster I bought requires it's own sensors, and to get the oil pressure sensor to fit, I need to find a 45 degree elbow pipe fitting, which has proved to be the most difficult task I've ever undertaken in my life.

Since the holiday weekend is over, my local hardware store is back open, they can usually get me what I need, so I might drive it today!

Call them about it and talk to customer service. They are usually really good when it comes to something like that. I had a pair of shocks that where over 5 years old and they replaced them. Its worth a shot. Good luck.

I didn't think it'd be worth it since I didn't have the box and stuff anymore, but you're right, it's probably worth a shot just to give them a call.

Finally drove it around a good bit outside. Power steering has a leak, going to add some teflon tape later today. Other than that, it's quite solid. Need to get in touch with Frank about some Hotchkis springs and shocks.

Updates are unfortunately rolling in a little slower now. She's leaking oil on the top end, so I'm going to pull the intake and valvecovers and permatex them both with that high temp stuff, hopefully that will cure the issue. The car has a spoiler now, it's amazing how much that little piece of plastic "classys-up" the front end. I'm still having trouble with the electric fan, I'm probably going to add a switch and just keep it on with the ignition, as the thermostat has proved itself to be crap. Ah, that list to completion sure does love building itself back up constantly.

19's are too big for my tastes, man. I'm definitely gonna get some 18's when the money's there. Right now I'm just waiting on some UCA's I ordered from Frank at Prodigy, he managed to hook me up with the High Clearance Speedtech Arm's for a good price. Once those come in, the car goes back together and I'll see what she can do.

All I got right now is pics of some bad ass parts that I can't even put on my car. :( This week is suckishly long.

EDIT: Also got my exhaust coming in tomorrow, 3 inch with Magnaflows dumped before the wheel out the side of the car.

Lol I understand, I was only saying that cause I have 19's for sale hahahaha. But I am riding 18's now and they are perfect... well perfect as the car just sits there. Atleast you get to see ur parts I can't even see mine DAN, since I can't even get a tracking # or a phone call back!! But never mind that 3" exhaust those are gonna be massive!!! I think 2"1/2 are perfect but if you are doing 3" go for it, + they should not give u much problem cause you wont have to deal with that pesky rear sway bar since they dump early But they will be loud!!!!!!

Vicinity

It looks to be more an issue of the stock swaybar, which I don't think is the correct size anyway. The mounts are pretty tall 5 or more inches, and with the car now lowered, I think that's an issue that just popped up. Certainly not the fault of your parts. Although, I wanted to ask, any reason why one side would sit a quarter inch lower than the other? In the two pics I posted above, the first pic front wheel sits just a tad closer to the fender, it's not a big deal, but it was kind of bugging me.
