View Full Version : lets see your homemade airdam/splitter and rear spoliers
im building a 82 fairmont pro touring style on a small budget.
im looking to build a airdam of some type, so lets see what you guys made.
also im looking to build a duckbill style rear spoiler, so if you made one post it up.
thanks
anyone, i was thinking of making one out of sheet metal or trying to make a nother car bumper fit on the bottom of my steel bumper

Walk the junkyards. I've seen a few people pick up late model airdamns that fit surprisingly well. One guy even used spring steel flexible scraper blades to mount them so he wouldn't rip them off on curbs and such.
At the least, it might give ya some ideas for building something.

With a Fairmont, you should be able to use airdams from 79-93 Fox body Mustangs, and possibly even the 94-04 SN95 models. Plenty of aftermarket stuff for them that could be adapted to your car.

The front spoiler is 5052 aluminum. The rear spoiler is honeycombed (hollow) carbon fiber -- which replaced a 6061 aluminum version I started with.

From experience(20 years ago) the front air dam from a mid 80's dodge Dakota pickup fits perfectly on the front of a fairmont. Bolts right to the bottom of the bumper. Looks like ford put it there.

The front is made from .060 5052 aluminum. It's actually 3 pieces welded together.

Some kind of heavy rubber sheet?
That's what i thought as well the first time i saw that pic. Got me thinking that it could be possible. I had heavy rubber airdam under my C5. It would be real heard for it to maintain its shape like on the nova but if you were doing something with very few bends it might be possible. Benefit is it would just temporarily bend if you hit a speed bump or drove up something with a high approach angle.

I plan to add a custom front spoiler on my camaro.
I don't want to put it on the stock location: the low pressure area behind the spoiler will draw the air instead of letting it pass through the radiator:
If I put it under the radiator support, it make the whole front of the radiator a high pressure area and the engine bay a low pressure area: the flow in the radiator and intercooler should be improved for a better cooling.
What do you think of this theory?
Do you have any pictures of a spoiler mounted in this location?
keep post them, i really appreciate it.

I've been working on aero stuff for my 70 Firebird. I'm doing it strictly for function on road courses and at land speed race events (which may require 2 configurations). The front spoiler extension and splitter will either be hinged to allow movement if the splitter hits the ground or the whole thing will be removable for normal street use. My setup will not be nearly as pretty as some of the ones posted already. No point in getting too carried away with looks when there's a good possibility I'll stuff the car in a tire wall or something eventually.
If everything works out my splitter will seal to the bottom of the core support and continue back to the crossmember under the engine. The core support will be sealed up so the only place air entering the grills can go is through the radiator. This should keep enough underhood negative pressure to ensure good cooling for the radiator while the extension/splitter adds downforce and directs air over and to the sides of the car. Sides and rear of the car will also be getting aero modifications.

Actually you will see alot of newer cars with deflectors right infront of the front tire. Tire wind resitance is the biggest factor for CoD. It is noticeable at even 60mph.
Not try to attack you or your car just making a reccomendation for anyone else building this style of front spoiler.

HAHA, I had the same thing happen when I lowered my mustang. I then had to raise the coilovers another .5" to get the jack out.

02-27-2012, 04:55 AM
I understand about the center of wheel thing, i just look at my 1969 camaro as a 4x8 sheet of plywood going down the road at 100 mph for CoD. i also think i will need to install a 2x8 weather treated board that is cut at a 45 degree angle to even get my car into the drive...

Looks good.
For better aero it should be as wide as the outside of the tires.
When I was building mine I tried to keep this in mind, but to keep the contours matched to the lower valance it was difficult to push the air dam out past the tires. It was a blend of looks and function.
Nick Ostas
02-27-2012, 06:39 AM
i have not driven my car yet, not the greatest weather here in MI. I love the look and i owe that to you. Sincre thanks. It bolted right up to the lower valance contour and the build was fairly easy. We will have to see how it actually performs on the road, but as for looks, its right on the money.

Here is mine, although it is far from homemade. What you are seeing are just the plugs to make the molds. It is being hand fabricated by Jeff from Munssey Speed and Design. The design for the air dam and splitter came from Manuel who owns Hydyne Motorsport. Manuel was kind enough to let us use his vision. On this site, Manuel posts under the user name of jp455, and if you look at post #75 I'm sure you will be very impressed when he gets a chance to post his pictures.

You can look up at the SCCA ,IMSA Camel GT race cars from back in that era,Some were pretty wild,

My version of a rear spoiler, made with a layer of fiberglass that are attached to the deck lid then added foam on top of that and made the shape I wanted. Then I added fiberglass and a lot of resin on top of the foam and it is now close to be done. It's crazy how much time it takes, damn! But worth it in the end.
The car is a 1973 Mustang Fastback :)

Look up the SCCA /IMSA road racers of the same period. And how wild or mild you would want to go.

I want a big air dam for the front of my 70 El Camino. Spoilers by Randy offers three for a 70 A-body but I can't make up my mind about one of those, yet. Spectre made one I really like but they have been discontinued. Wish I had the talent some of you possess, I'd design and build my own but I don't. Hard to believe that only two businesses have built these.

And the Falcon Apron (was not happy with the way the Mustang aprons fit) but wanted an old school T/A look.

Zombie thread, eh? OK sure. I was planning on making this an Easter egg on my finished project but...
I saw this little Italian compact car being tested on one of the Top Gear episodes but don't recall the make. The car being tested had a small underspoiler under the back of the car used for added downforce. It wasn't a rear diffuser, it was an actual factory wing spoiler mounted under the rear fascia. I threw one together and stuck one on the back of my test bed... I mean beater truck, to see how well it would work and danged if it didn't put a noticeable amount of downforce on the back of the truck. With this on, the truck felt a lot more planted than without it. There is one highway exit that has a long, tightish sweeping curve that I take on a regular basis in a little used but highly visible road area. Without it I don't like taking that turn over 50, with it I felt secure taking it over 60.
It also seemed to improve fuel mileage by about a half mile to a mile per gallon over the tanks of fuel I used during the time it was on. My theory is it aimed air up into the low pressure zone that comes in behind the tailgate and this reduced some of the inherent drag a truck has from that large cliff-like drop. And, normally downforce devices will lower mileage due to disturbing the air, but this being under the back of the truck it was in air that had already been disturbed. But that's just a guess.
Unfortunately, my 30 minutes of combined engineering and construction somehow failed to include longevity as after a month it started showing signs of coming apart. I removed it before it removed itself, but now that I've proven to me that it works the idea will live on. I plan on building a better engineered, better looking version that doesn't use scrap I had laying around. I should get better results on my project truck. It will be both getting some belly pans underneath and be much closer to the ground, so should be well suited for this. The one I use on the project will be integrated into the roll pan so that it goes unnoticed unless you're looking for it.
Oh, and all my results are unscientific seat of the pants readings. Your results may vary, no warranty expressed or implied, any disagreements will require arbitration with me as the arbitor, ect ect ect. :smoke:

Cool! Thanks for posting. That looks like a perfect use for my extra 1st gen S10 Blazer rear spoiler. If you remember the car that inspired you please post it so I won't have to rewatch 25 years of Top Gear.

Heh heh, I've been racking my brain but all I remember was it's a European make. Maybe a Fiat Barchetta?
