I'm putting an LS1 and t56 into an 89 Trans Am. I've also got a t56 to put into my 67 later on. I also have an 01 TA so I'm on ls1tech quite a bit. There are a lot of threads over there about the stock 4th gen clutch master cylinders not moving enough fluid especially if you have a stiffer than stock clutch. My 01 shifts like crap but it might need a clutch. The Tick Performance master cylinder is a pretty popular upgrade for 4th gens. It's just a Tilton master cylinder with a machined adaptor to put it at the correct angle and an adjustable rod.

Check out the remote bleeder at the bottom of that page. Looks like it would be a nice thing to have for any t56 with a hydraulic clutch.

Most swaps I've seen on here are using stock 4th gen clutch master cylinders with the little angled plate behind the brake booster, so I could easily use one in both of my cars, but I don't want to mess with a stock master since they obviously aren't adequate in the first place.

I emailed Tick Performance to see if their master cylinder will work in my 89. I don't see why it wouldn't unless there's just not room for it, the machined aluminum piece looks a little wider. But even if it does it seems a little redundant to have an adaptor plate on the firewall and an adaptor on the master cylinder. It would probably be easy enough to buy a tilton master and make an adaptor to put it at the angle it would need to be at.

For those using a stock 4th gen master how satisfied with it are you?

And for those not using a stock 4th gen master what are you using?

Thanks in advance

I just used the Tick master in my 64 GTO with the ATS plate. It installed easily. The adjustable pushrod makes pedal height adjustments easy. Tick also sells Corvette and GTO versions of their masters which might install into your 89 more easily.

I'm using the stock 4th gen master with the plate you mentioned. One thing I didnt expect was the short pedal travel. The pedal only goes about halfway to the floor. I had to make a pedal stop bracket and attach it to one of the steering column plate bolts. This keeps you from bottoming out the master & cracking it. At first I didnt think I'd like the short travel, but it seems to work great. I have not used any other aftermarket masters before, this is my first t56 swap. Scott

Good to know, I hadn't yet heard of anyone using the Tick master in an older car.

I finally found a picture of a Tick MC in a third gen. I try to keep up with all the swap threads on thirdgen.org but some how missed that a few guys have used them.

I was thinking a 3rd gen needed an adaptor like a 1st gen would to use a 4th gen MC but apparently not, it just bolts to the firewall the same as a 4th gen. I'm definitely going to get one for my 89 TA here soon and when I eventually put the t56 in my 67 I'll either get a Tick MC or use like a Tilton or Wilwood pedal setup with the appropriate master cylinders.
