I have started to look for a 68 Camaro to restore i want something to use for pro touring, so all I need is a solid body to start with. Have found a few cars but intill you strip it down you never know what you are buying. Was looking at a company called Dynacorn that sells whole bodies a 68 runs a little more then 13k but no need to worry about any body work. So me question is has anyone ever restored a car in this manner with buying a whole new body if so how would you compare to traditional restoration, and are there any other companies that I can look into.

Technically if you use the entire thing you have to go to your motor vehicle dept with one of those new bodies, and they will title it and assign it a state VIN # So if you went this month it would be titled as a 2011 whatever, not a 1968 camaro. If you went to sell it you'd most likely have to advertise it as a 68 camaro RS clone, or whatever type you built. All this is due to the fact that you cannot take the VIN from the another car and transfer it to the new body. It is illegal.
However, many people get around this by using part of the original body. For example the firewall and roof of the original with the rest of the repro body grafted onto it. This is a very controversial thing. There are varied opinions about it and it leads to heated discussions. But from a legal standpoint its ok. An expert can still usually tell, but many others cant, and some who do this fully disclose when they sell what was replaced.....and some dont.
Keep in mind that many people consider the aftermarket sheetmetal to be inferior in many ways.....so what are you getting for your $13,000?
To be honest, there are plenty of sharp straight bodies available for less than half that if you keep your eyes open for someone who got into a project and then lost interest with time, or money issues. Just make sure the work they did was quality.
There was a guy here on PT who spent $23,000 on a 79 Trans Am body and project. Had receipts to show for it. Beautiful prep and all it needed was final sanding before paint. He wanted to move on to another project, advertised it here and Performance Years last summer......sold it for around $3500.

We are a Dynacorn bodies dealer and have built them. They are pretty nice now. I also happen to have a already original 1968 body that is all sheetmetal done by us, totally striped and blasted, in epoxy primer, and is already mini tub tub which puts you $3K to the good. It is a abandon customer project and you can buy this one with a title and all for less then the Dynacorn.

There are many states that offer the SEMA model which means that the states titles the car based on what it resembles. There are currently about 21 states that have adopted this method. So, if you live in one of these states the car would actually be registered as a 1968 Camaro.

I've had my eye on this '68 body for my next project-unfortunately timing is a little off. It is very nice and puts you in a true '68 Camaro with a clean title. Well worth it in my opinion.

One of these days I should stop by and visit them. They are only 2 blocks from my day job.
For a little less than double that you can get a shell from MCC http://www.mikescustomcars.com that has a title. Looks like they will install mini tubs or what ever else you may want as well.

I don't know if this would interest you or not, but I know of a rusty, but complete (and running!) '68 here in GA that you could get for less than $3k. I have only seen pictures, but even paying someone to do the work you could come out cheaper than buying a new shell, and it would be a "real" '68. Email me if you are interested, and I'll forward the info. I could check it out better if you want.

Mini tubs are just wider than stock rear wheel tubs. Instead of the pro street style full size tubs. Mini tubs allow you to run a wider tire than stock tubs and you still get to keep your back seat.
