I'm curious what you guys are using to strip primer/paint to bare metal?
My car has had the factory paint covered up with a really thick rough coat of primer that I'm taking down.
I have used a few different brands but even different brands seem to be mixed quality. Some last a long time some trash in a minute or two.
What grit do you guys use and is it worth buying a box from 3M maybe?
If you're not using Roloc (twist on type) discs, what are you using? I have used a flapper wheel that goes on a 4" angle grinder, but it seems like it really heats up.

I would not use Roloc or flapper wheels on large areas as they will heat up fast create more body work to fix (I only use Rolocs when grinding down welds or preping small areas for filler). I'm not sure about stripping "primer" but in cases of removing high build up paint, I have used a razor blade scraper to remove the bulk of the paint and then use a chemical stripper for the rest. The final metal cleanup, I use a 6" dual action sander with 3M 80 grit. I've tried just about every brand of sandpaper and it seems to me that 3m lasts longer without clogging.

I agree with above...
Just went through this process and chemical stripper is easiest and fastest way to strip.
If you are inside, try to find stripper called zip-strip. Aircraft stripper works well too but the fumes are
bad. Chemically remove,clean-up and sand with 80 grit.

I've used a Norton Blue nylon stripper wheel bought at Home Depot for $9. Works great. No real heat build up as long as you keep moving. A guy on Team Camaro stripped his entire car with these using 6 wheels. I'm on my 3rd wheel, but I have 4 different paint jobs on this thing!

Thanks guys.
Would you recommend the same for the dash? I has surface rust poking through the paint in lots of places.

the wheels that rob and aj recommeded are great, just dont catch an edge or it will be gone. like rob said, about 9 bucks at home depot or available though your auto body supply. just like anything, move around to keep the heat down. they dont produce much though.

tim,you can get those discs aj talked about@ h.f. cheaper, also if you use a router speed controller they sell you can slow down the rpm and not have the electric grinder beat your hand to death@10,000 rpm!i used the brush on stripper from eastwood and the spray bomb kleen strip with the car on the can from auto zone 1.99 a can, just make sure to tape any body seams and not put stripper there or it will hurt your paint job down the road, rinse with baking soda and water after two.then da it 80 grit 3m green paper.when i went to a lessonl sikkens trainning ceter last yr.they had these etching wipes in a can like the you use for cleaing@home and the instructor showed us a pc. of bare metal wiped with this stuff and it was in bare metal for a year and a half.be a good thing to look into for you,but there pricey 100.00 for 25 wipes.if you ever need help with body work tim pm me and ill give you a hand im local to you.phil
