My 68 Camaro is in the body shop as we speak and I want to do something different in the rear. My idea is to bring the exhaust out below the bumper where the back up lights would normally go. I was thinking I could use a 69 style tail light in LED with the back up light intergral in the tail light.
I have a Rick's Hot Rod stainless gas tank and the corners are shaved to accomodate the exhaust. I would have to enlarge the back up light holes to allow room for a rectangular tip for the exhaust. Not sure if back up lights are required by law. Also not sure if a 69 tail light will fit in a 68 hole. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

69 taillight will not fit in a 68 hole you will need to use the openings from a 69 tail panel

You aren't required to have backup lights on your 68. They were only required on vehicles manufactured after 1/1/69. You can add them if you want, but then they will need to work properly. I don't have any on my 67; it just makes backing up at night a little slower =)

Just use 67 non-RS tail lights. They are half red, half white. I think this exhaust mod would look cool.

Or 68 non- RS taillights with the clear back-up light. If you want them fancy get a Marquez design bezel and DigiTails.

I like the exhaust tip idea. I am inclined to mention the super annoying rattle I used to have that caused me to split a piece of 3/8" rubber hose and put it on the leaf spring and the lower fender for dampening as there was just enough lump at idle that my right tailpipe would get some weird harmonics and resonate through the whole car.
Not fun. This was with turn-downs right between the body and leafspring.

Actually, I considered this idea for my 67 RS Camaro. Although, I was going to have custom made bezels made for the exhaust tip. Anyway, since you have your tank. The tank might need to be narrowed. The notch is just for around the edge of the tank.. I don't think you have room now, but just make a template out of cardboard of your tank and see if you have room to go through. Also there will be more work involved on the rear panel, so that it won't rattle through the car or burn the paint.
