I must say, I really like it even if it doesnt win. Great stance, rolling stock and the body mods/details are awesome. I especially like the blacked out frame work for the vent windows.

I dig it except for the "battle axe" stripes... too "loud" for my tastes I guess. But paint ain't everything, and that thing has got plenty else for me to gawk at... it's definitely a contender. :bananna2:

With Dodge's resurection, I can see the Cuda from last month's (I think) PHR taking it. It wasn't completed as of yet (expected to debut at the Goodguys Columbus) but man is it going to be bad@ss.

i like the dart, but the battleaxe is way to much, and to me does not fit the car, but thats my opinion, i would still love for it to be mine

I don't think there is anything wrong with those stripes at all. They are very tastefully done. Shwartz Extreme Performance did a great job of putting that car together in a very short time!
Well done, Jeff Shwartz and crew!

If you STARE at the graphics for a while, I can see how they'd throw the car off. You'd always notice them. I don't think it's bad looking at all. I say awesome work Jeff. I gotta get out to Chicago and check it all out. That's a damn good looking Mopar right there.

i don't think anyone said they were bad, we said if it were me it would not have them, they drag your eyes to it when you look at it, which i would rather have the attention brought to the craftsmenship of the car, killer car jeff, nice work

I remember the first time I saw a rendering of it and now it is just a cool as the pictures. Does anyone have a rear shot of it. I want to see how Jeff ended up doing the tail lights.

KrisHorton
06-07-2005, 05:25 PM
The taillights aren't like the original one (68 Charger lights/bezels) but they're not too shabby. I think the car looks pretty killer. I don't like the white engine compartment even though it makes the most sense for it to be white. Just too sterile and lifeless. The chin spoiler might be slightly too big, but like I said, overall, nicely done.

Picking the SM of the year is like trying to decide what woman to take home for the night from a room of supermodels.. The best one for one guy will probley not be the same for another.

Nice car though! :)

Like the car, like the paint, like the wheels. After reading the above comments I agree that maybe all 3 don't work together? Looks killer but just a little off to me in mixing styles although I am tired of the Euro look anyway (It is cheaper to just go out and buy a Porsche if that is what you wanted) Different, and that is what makes it stand out. Nice job!!

It's a beautiful car, I'm not knocking it. Actually it's one of my favorites. But no...it's not the Hot Rod of the year.

I would say there are 3 cars in contention for that title.

- 1st would be the Twinsting Corvette

- 2nd would be John Parson's II Much (if it's finished this year)

- 3rd third would be that black Barracuda that was in PHR a few months back with the amazing full blown pro-touring suspension. Awesome car. It's on Power Tour as we speak. A picture of it is below thanks to Steve Benson.

I am currently writing the feature on the black hemi cuda.. sweet car, IRS and a hemi - how can you loose? It was built by Matt Delaney and is simply an amazing car. It was also at SEMA and there is a picture of it in the July issue of PHR "a mopar in your future?"

I would have to say that every year the pool of cars worthy of SMOTY gets bigger and bigger...

Thanks guys. We started Poison Dart for Imagine Motorsports in Feb 05. The car was out for blast, powder coat and paint for about 6 weeks. So Schwartz Extreme Performance did dis-assy, fabrication, and assembly in 10 weeks (about xxxx hrs).
And there was a bunch of fabrication of the subtle body mods.
The tail lights we made from scratch (lenses, box for bulbs, etc) to look like road runner. Contrary to what's shown on tv, I don't believe anyone has done a car of this level in that time frame. We had to build it the way the customer wanted it, I personally like the graphics.
There's quite a bit different on our rear suspension compared to the black Cuda. I did meet Matt Delaney on Power Tour, swell guy.
More build shots here: www.schwartzperformance.com
thanks again,

Steve,

I think it would be interesting if you could research the past SMOTY winners as far back as 2000 (or earlier) and post pics and specs here and Lateral-g.net I will even help w/ my limited memory skills.
2004 was the Silver T-Bird
2003 was Chicane of course
2002 was the '56 Chevy right?

Anyone remember 2001, 2000, 1999 etc?

Who decides these things? Does the car have to be shown first at a car show? Is there a deadline date for completion to be accepted for that years honer?

Maybe Steve from PHR knows? I loved his comment about the similarities of beautiful women. It is a matter of taste than it is of quality. These cars are all magnificent. In my opinion all these cars that are nominated are all true winners. These cars are just amazing. :hail:

The Dart is very nice and something different for sure, but just doesn't seem quite up to the extreme level of some of the other cars. The 67' Nova and the 56' 210 were some of my all time faves. Oh yeah Chicayne ain't too shabby either, too bad it wasn't a Bubbletop though.

Roger,
First of all we are talking about a coupla different awards here. I started the thread as Hot Rod of the Year. This is awarded by Hot Rod magazine and decided by the editors of the title. I think Poison Dart might do well as Hot Rod of the Year since it represents a departure from the norm.
Others have mentioned Street Machine of The Year, which is awarded at Goodguys Columbus, OH in a coupla weeks. Your car has to be there, must be entered in the competition, and then a panel of judges decide who wins.

Yes, SMOTY is awarded by the Good Guys group.. which is funny since they are more oriented twords street rods than street machines..

After it is picked it is immediatly shot for PHR.

Hot Rod OTY is (as stated) picked by Hot Rod magazine then shot for thier book..

picking SMOTY is very tough and it comes down to the tiniest thing usually..

I will be in Columbus picking the PHR top ten but the GG group picks SMOTY..

I like the subtle mods that don't immediatly catch the eye. At first glance it may not look like much was done to it, but when you see the Poison Dart next time, take a look at some of it's innovative features.
1) The grill material, never used on a car before, look at it side ways it looks nearly solid, look at it straight on an there's nearly 0 restrction to airflow, cost to make this piece? 5 figures.
2) The chassis, under and inside of body, a 3 step powdercoating process in the exact metalic orange as the paint, complete with clear powder, never done before. cost nearly 5 figures.
3) Extensive body mods, primarily on the valances and bumpers.
4) One of a kind tail lights made from scratch including lenses, any one notice where the front turnsignals are? Yea, I know that was done before, as was the paddle shifter and the vacuum operated flip down license plate.
5) The frame rails? what looks pretty normal is not, super stiff, with secret stiffening device hidden inside, if you saw V8TV.....
6) Carbon rear diffuser any other street cars had that? Not sure, just asking. Notice the door handles?
Here's a shot of the rear, without the carbon diffuser installed.
I'm not trying to change anyone's opinion, just pointing out some things that could easily be missed at first glance. I personally like the Cuda body style better than a Dart, but I like doing things out of the norm as you probably know already, so I enjoyed doing this for Imagine.

I just saw TwinSting tonight.. the guy is VERY cool and down to earth.. He has had the car two weeks now and loves it.

Having seen the car in person I can say it is VERY VERY nice and well engineered.. He will not be going to Columbus so he will not be in the running for SMOTY.. nice guy and car though, it is the poster child for the term Street Fighter..

Steve Cook will be at Goodguys with his dad's new '69 Camaro. It is definitely a show car but will get driven. Look very carefully at it and you might see something very different with front of the body. Lots of small cool mods on it as well. It is powered by a Gen VI 454 twin supercharged, Air Ride suspension, handmade aluminum grill which is sick, and it is very yellow. I saw it Friday and he was down to finishing the interior and detailing the car.

As it's their customer's car, Poison Dart is being used by Imagine to promote their business.
The events I'll be attending where it will also be are Car Craft Nats, St Paul MN and Hot Rod Super Nats Springfield IL, SEMA. Maybe a few others.
You'll most likely find me nearby with Cadillac Attack, and Y Gen 3rd Gen. I don't have anything old enough (yet) to display at Goodguys.

Steve Not to start a label debate but how is twin sting a streetfighter?

Streetfighters are garage built cars or bikes with an emphasis on the go, not the show.
No smooth firewalls ac or gloveskin leather to be seen , just rollbars , gnarly interiors and bad manners.

Twin sting is a gorgeous car and the owner is a nice guy, the car is a showstopper.

It is the polar opposite of a streetfighter.

I am surprised the guy who goes by the name streetfighter has not addressed this but he may feel awkward about it, if I am speaking out of turn let me know.

That is going to be a killer ride, when done. I got to check it out while my car was in their shop, getting my Air Ride set-up installed.

Mike, was that black 57 Belair still in their shop? That wouldn't be a bad protouring ride either with LS6/4L65E,C4 IRS,and full Air Ride suspension.
That 56 Ford convertible with Morrison chassis,427 SOHC cammer motor w/EFI,TKO-600,and quickchange rear is going to take the show circuit by storm when it's done, too.

Maybe I was mistaken but I thought the definition of a streetfighter was more of hybrid PT and street racer. Not really setup for ultimate handling or 1/4 mile drag racing, kind of a happy medium between the two. Garage built cars, PT of streetfighter, can be built for show, go, or show and go.

FAST, PRETTY, CHEAP.....pick any two because you can not have all three.

MuscleRodz

My history is a little rusty, but the term streetfighter is a term used over in Europe for choppers. Bikes that are stripped down of all but the bare necessities, anything that does not help performance is taken off. Choppers over in Europe are supposidly much different than American choppers (not OCC, but America as a region).

With that being said, a Streetfighter is a car built for pure acceleration, handling, and stopping. There are no creature comforts (A/C, leather, heat, etc). Take a look at Steevo's car which I think is the posterboy for a street fighter (Steve (Chryssos) was also the one to imply the term Streetfighter for use with pro-touring type cars), you won't find heat, A/C, leather interior, 200lbs of sound deadening, billet wheels, or any other "unnecessary commodities". Just a 500hp small block, an over drive paddle shifted trans, a 10pt. dual purpose SCCA/NHRA roll cage, 18" forged wheels, race rubber, and a car that is up for anything.

I usually stay out of these label debates because they tend to lead no where, but the term streetfighter is getting tossed around too much lately. A Streetfighter is a bare bones G-machine built for performance. It's basically a street legal race car. To take the wording straight from Steevo's feature, StreetFighters are G-Machine counterculture.

Of course the term is open to interpretation, but this is what the term first meant when it was used by Steve a few years ago and what it still means today to many people. Check out the feature on Steve's car in PHR, I think it was March or May 2003 for a good description and example of what a streetfighter is.

Ahh yeah, now I remember it was stripped down sport bikes. I think it was worded as streetfighters are their (Europe's) choppers. I'm almost positive it crossed over with Steevo's feature (Steve wrote the feature). I'll bring the issue to OBI next time.

Well twinsting is not pro-touring.. it is not pro-street.. somewhere inbetween.. I guess it is in how you define something..

So now streetfighter has to be build in your garage?? :hmm:

I guess you had better contact GMP and tell them the 68 Camaro diecast is NOT a street fighter..

I tood streetfighter to be a car that emphasised power over handling.. a pro-street car that can handle some.. You know, if you wanted to battle on the streets rather than the track so the car had to have more pro-touring elements like better brakes and handling but not at the sacrafice of raw power.

Learn something new every day I guess.. Did Steveo build his car in his garage? is his interior ratty? I do see you points but that is one NARROW definition.. doubt I can think of more than a couple cars that fit that description.

And this is why I hate lables.. everyone has thier own take and it is usually pretty narrow and specific.. Like I said, another day, another definition learned.. :)

So if you have no AC, no heat, no stereo but you have a smoothed firewall then it is not a street fighter? Or if your firewall is ugly and you have dynomat then you are DQ'd...

Wow.. this stuff is complicated.. anyone have a chart?????

Labels do get quite annoying. I would not define a streetfighter as a pro-streeter that can handle, though. If anything I'd see it as the opposite, a car with more handling capabilities than power. I think when Steevo used the term he intended for it to be narrow, and therefore counterculture.

In the end though, labels are useless. Build your car for yourself, and call it what you want.

lol, throw a wrench into the mix. Steevo has a "small" hidden stereo, that he added after a year or so of the car being completed. BUT, he has no door glass. Damn, steve's gunna get pissed from us picking apart his car.

I don't think a Streetfighter needs to have or not have all of those things, but it's the big picture and the cars intended use that count. My car is being built in the streetfighter sense, and it'll have a smoothed firewall. No A/C, heat or stereo, though. Fixed back seats, and 12pt cage.

This is what makes labels so diffficult. New cars and ways of thinking are constantly blurring the lines between what it(genres) is and what it once was.

TwinSting is where Pro Street needs to be. So call it Pro Street. Other examples? Mike Desmond’s 65 Malibu, Tony Bartone’s 69 Camaro. Bartone's car has 6 piston “Martinsville” brakes and 255 front tires with 90 vette spindles. It handles, rides and brakes better than traditional "big and little" Pro Streeters, but will NEVER be a true handling car.
So these cars exorcise all of the old school pro street demons. How? By co-mingling pro-touring parts. But in the end, they are still Pro Streeters. The most significant component on TwinSting is the rear tire. It accepts a large diameter wheel and offers the ride and handling characteristics of a true street radial--but the outer dimensions are pure pro street. That's big news!! The large diameter wheel allows for real brakes and matched pro-touring parts up front. So Pro Street may have a bright future. Trust me--you'll be doing Pro Street a favor by "labelling" TwinSting as such.

As for streetfighters, there's no need to argue the specifics. All you have to do is park Big Red next to TwinSting next to the Mule.
If you can't see the difference, it's time for an eye exam or IQ check. Strip away all the amenities and creature comforts and all that remains is raw performance. Once you start piling on options and hyperdetailing, it doesn't matter what you call it, but it ain't a Streetfighter.

In the case of my own car, I could not afford--nor did I have the skills--to build a "perfect" pro-touring car. So rather than build a half-finished car, I drew attention to the imperfections and deficiencies. Can't smooth a firewall? Fine: Rivet a big, obvious sheet of aluminum where the heater core used to be! Gotta have high end forged wheels but don't have the money? Fine: Spend the money allocated for fuel injection and AC! I actually indend to add AC to my car some day. But I'll mount the compressor way down low and out of sight so as to preserve the stripped down attitude of the car--just as I did with the stereo. Gauges are mounted where the stereo should be. The stereo head is hidden where the left/rear quarter window regulator should be. The rear quarter windows are lexan and fixed in the up position. And the stereo controls are flush mounted in the back of the floor shifter. All this took a lot of extra work, but it preserves the car's attitude.

So for anyone who is sick about "mines bigger than yours" escalation in hot rodding, there's a way to embrace your car's imperfections. Maybe it deserves a label, maybe not.

Lastly, labels are important because they allow us to express ourselves on pro-touring.com and follow along with the pages of Popular Hot Rodding. Otherwise we'd be typing sentences like this:
Hey did you guys see that new BLANK? Yeah that's the coolest BLANK I've ever seen--although, I like Bob's BLANK better. It has some BLANK influence, but also some BLANK styling cues. BLANKITY-BLANK BLANK BLANK. Ever try logging on to www.blank.com? Noone bothered to secure that domain.

I had only heard of Streetfighter as a term used for sportbikes in Europe, where a trend deeloped after guys who had dropped their plastic bikes were not going to spend 2G on refitting them in new fairings. Function created form here, maybe a parallel would be ghetto kids wearing ill-fitting hand-me-downs that becomes a trend in suburbia with everyone wearing clothes 4 sizes too large. In the streetfighter mags of a few years ago, less was more, and you could leave your credit card at home b/c off-the-rack bits would look like it. Some of the bikes were frankensteins without much of concept b/c of the emphasis on budget (or lack thereof). Some were super counterculture in a way that you can't fake. Those guys probably didn't even own an automobile- or know anyone who did- smelled bad, and called in sick on alot of Mondays.
LS1, don't be surprised when you redefine a word on a website dedicated to talking about just such distinctions. Chill out! You sound pissed.
