Well this 64 Chevelle wagon is hardly a new project to our family and many of you have seen it at different events over the years, but we figured it was time to start a build thread so people can see the big changes we’re making over the next few years. Sometimes we think build names are overdone but this one seemed pretty catchy so we’re going with it.
Some folks probably have been following along with our 66 2-door hardtop Pro-Touring build and know it has been our main effort for the last 8 years. The wagon was bought in 2003 when we realized that the 66 was going to be a long project. Even though we’ve made some huge improvements since we bought it, we’ve continued to drive it and enjoy it. This was really considered our wagon until the 66 was on the road, now it has become "her" wagon.
So, here’s where it is right now:
Powder coated frame
SPC upper A-arms
Reinforced lower A-arms with Del-a-lum bushings and custom swaybar mounts
ATS/AFX spindles
C5 front brakes
Hotchkis 1 3/8” hollow front swaybar
Jeep Grand Cherokee power steering box
Hotchkis lowering springs
KYB GR-2 shocks
Basically stock 327
Edelbrock performer intake
Holley offroad 600 cfm carb
GM HEI distributor
Hedman shorty headers
200-4R transmission with B&M shift kit
GM 12 bolt rearend with Eaton carrier, Moser axles and Richmond 3.42:1 gear
Rear disc brakes (some sort of small conversion using GM parts)
Wheel Vintiques 17x7” steel ralley wheels up front and 17x8” in the rear
BFGoodrich KDW’s
Here’s what’s coming up: (hopefully in 2011)
L&H Kustoms Pro Billet Tall Spindles
TKO 600 transmission
“LS1” rear brake swap (12”)
Wider tires front and back

The wagon wasn't a hard sell to Deb really at all. She's a little strange anyway, enjoying our hobby and turning wrenches when she can. Oddball!
A two door wagon would have been our first choice, but after getting this one and cruising with two kids and two dogs, we're happy for the extra doors!

Tom, I still smile when I think about us cruising down to the 7/11 at Pigeon Forge in the wagon. That is a totaly cool cruiser that can run the cones on any given day! I keep toying with the idea of adding a 66 wagon to my pair.

Made some progress! Sam was off school for four days last week due to the ice storm so we worked him like a borrowed mule on the house remodel and car projects. We also got to work out every morning together so that was pretty cool too.

Someone on our Chevelles.com build thread asked why we would get rid of the ATS spindles in favor of the L&H Kustoms spindles which is a great question and I will answer it here also since I know some are wondering the same thing. OK, I will be lazy and just cut and paste my answer I used on the other forum...

"Good question! We had originally been looking at the L&H spindles in the fall of 2009 when we found a used set of ATS spindles. After meeting Luke (of L&H) at the 2010 Pro-Touring dinner and talking to him at the Optima Invitational he made us a great deal. The ATS spindles functioned great and we also have them on our 66. They have already gone to a close friend and will be on his Chevelle soon!
If the L&H spindles perform half as well as they look, we'll be thrilled. Deb is looking forward to thrashing them on the auto-x soon and road courses before long."

Ditching the KYB GR-2 stock replacement shocks for the Edelbrocks. We bought these a few years ago for our 66 project, but ended up taking them off when we installed the DSE coil-overs. Sam thought he was getting these for his 67, but was ok with not getting them when I told him he may end up with coil-overs before his hits the road.

Those spindles do look really sweet. I assume they also correct the geometry (like the ATS parts)?

I decided I needed to make a post on this thread since this is the car that I like to run the best. My great husband and son have been doing a fabulous job getting the car ready for me. I have to admit that this year I have not spent very much time in the shop wrenching with them. I have a good reason (I am going to Paramedic school) and they say they understand. I am still going to try to make as many events as I can this season and will definitely be 100% on board next year!

Hey Scott,
Yep, same basic idea about improving geometry. What's going on with your wagon? Am I missing a build thread somewhere, or are you making improvements under the cloak of darkness? Sneaky Skunkworks stuff? :naughty:

You must have seen the house pictures on Deb's facebook. I have been thinking about posting some pictures of it in the outhouse section here. That way I will have an excuse for not getting car stuff done...

Well, I thought I would be able to make a smart alack remark about this, but Deb helped out on the 66 yesterday for a handful of hours so she took away my ammunition... Truth is, as much as we use power tools and play hard we can definitely use a paramedic around the house. My EMT skills just aren't that good (especially for self help).

The wagon hasn't been getting much love lately with all the time and money going to the LS conversion in the 66. But, since we have a SCCA auto-x school this weekend we needed to come up with a better way to secure the battery and also install the rear shocks. My plan was to just bungy the battery in for now, but one thing led to another and I built a hold down. Not too nice, but pretty good for a port-a-band band saw and a drill press.

Debbie is busy Saturday so I asked Kaytlin if she wanted to take the wagon to do the auto-x school and she jumped all over it. She's starting to want to be more involved with us in the car hobby so I told her that the shocks needed to be changed before this weekend. With very little guidance she had the job done in just over an hour. Good kid!

Just a quick update. The wagon performed great at the SCCA auto-x. Kaytlin had a ball and both cars were very well received. One of the instructors who drove the wagon (sports car guy) couldn't believe that a car so big actually handled so well, especially a wagon.

Deb put the wagon to the test last weekend at the Run To Music City event. So, the real changes since last year were spindles, shocks and slightly more aggressive alignment specs.

The plan was to drive the 66 from Indy to Nashville (Debbie and Sam) and I would trailer the wagon. About an hour into the trip the 66 just died. No luck with quick trouble shooting so we unloaded the wagon and loaded the 66. I ended up driving the wagon down at a relatively quick rate of speed to try to make up time. (Sorted out the 66 as soon as we arrived so took that on the 80 mile cruise.)

Saturday was auto-x all day in the parking lot of Nashville Superspeedway. Deb did great and consistently improved her times on every lap. The car is just grossly under powered and even though the KDW's look great, 205's up front and 235's in the rear just don't stick that well. No matter what, people always get a huge kick out of how stable it is for what looks like just a beater.

Sunday was the road course and even though Deb had said all along that she didn't plan on running the wagon on it, when we arrived she changed her mind... According to Deb the car handled great and again, her times were very consistent. After two twenty minute sessions the trans started to overheat so she called it "done" and put it on the trailer. It really needs a lot more engine to cook along the road course, but for now it provides tons of entertainment for everyone.

We were really bad about taking pictures at this event, but here is one while she was waiting to go out for the first session.

One step ahead of you Scott! We have a really solid 65 El Camino that we're starting to make plans with. It's just a shell right now, but we have all the parts to start assembling it. It will be fourth on the hand-me-down list, so at this point it will be B-body spindles and 12" brakes up front and some generic 11" discs in the rear. Might even get the 283 that Sam and I rebuilt quite a few years ago. Once we're sure it's a go, we'll start a build thread. I might need another job to finance the family hobby...

We're long overdue for an update on the wagon but since our 66 and Sam's 4-door have been getting so much attention we've been slacking. Debbie has been driving the wheels off of the wagon and doing great! Keeping in mind that the 327 is worn out and 205 and 235 tires don't stick too well. She had a blast on the auto-x at the Motorstate Challenge and then last weekend had a good time on the Goodguys auto-x in Columbus. The L&H spindles are working great and Deb is as happy with their performance as she was about their good looks. When I drove the wagon home from Chevellabration I felt a some bumpsteer, but then realized the air bags in the springs were full from having it loaded down with coolers, tools and chairs. Once I let the air out it drove excellent again. We can't say enough good things about Luke and L&H Kustoms!

Here's a picture of Deb's three backseat drivers exiting the wagon after a fun run at Columbus. Yep, that's right, a total of five people in the car... I still have Chad from Bangshift.coms' words running through my mind. "We have tire rub!" Good times though!

Jimi Day from FM3 Marketing / Optima was kind enough to allow us to park the wagon inside the show Friday and Saturday night then really went over the top on Sunday by letting us leave it there all day. Great display vehlicle...

Not too much exciting happening with the wagon lately, but here's a little modification we made to the brake pedal. At some point I had stolen the rubber pad for another project and Deb had been driving it with just the bare metal. So, I removed the old pedal pad, took a piece of 1/8" steel plate, rounded it and welded it to the pedal arm. Blasted, primed, painted and glued anti-slip material to it. Just a stop gap until we win the manual transmission lottery and one shows up on the door step...

Well, the wagon and I made it through the weekend at the Midwest MuscleCar Challenge without a problem. The wagon just keeps going even when I doubt it. I ended up with 2 practice sessions of about 15 minutes each and then 5 timed laps. We were not the fastest on the road course Saturday but, the car handles like a dream. The transmission on the other hand was starting to loose some fluid by the end of the timed session and was smoking pretty bad, the review mirror even ended up splattered with trans fluid. (figure that one out!) It is probably more of my fear of pushing it to the edge the then car not being able to handle it. My instructor was even a great sport in riding the road course with only lap belts. Thank you Jeff Preston for all the pointers, I was feeling much more comfortable by the end the day.

Sunday was a full day with the Autocross and speed stop. Once again the wagon did great, I would like to have more power but, I am getting lots of practice and having a blast getting through the cones. I had to laugh, after I let Sam have a go at running the wagon on the auto cross, he said he has been giving me the wrong advice on the line I should be running, it was harder than he though to maneuver it through the cones. I have decided that I will keep running the wheels off the wagon and having a blast. I will just go through the learning curve again once it has made it to the top of the projects list and gets upgrades that will make "us" better!

Just a quick update on the wagon since Deb is at school and too busy to do it herself. We finally bought the DSE seven speed wiper kit and they brought it with them to Goodguys Indy. Long story short, since there was no autocross on Sunday, Sam, Deb and I installed the new kit. It has to be the easiest intall we've dealt with. Only weirdness was installing the switch into our custom instrument panel, but even that was realatively painless. Deb was actually hoping for rain on the short trip back to the garage/shop, but no luck there.
Here's a few pictures:

The front tires on the wagon have really had it. First off, I bought these KDW's for the front three years ago "new" on ebay. At that time I had no idea about date of tire manufacture but did know that the 300 treadwear was much better than the 500 on our Kelly Chargers. So, Deb put the wagon to the test this year with many autocross laps at different events and track days at Run To Music City and Midwest MuscleCar Challenge. I'm sure age was a huge factor, but the 205/50-17 was no match for the 3700 pound wagon. Here's the result. New wheel and tire pictures will follow within the next couple of days.

Im guessing the exposed belts are on the outside edge of the tire. What are you running for static camber? Another degree or two mite be helpful since it would keep more tire in contact with the ground not wear down the edges like that but Im sure age is a big factor as well

I would have to look back at my notes from the last alignment, but I believe it was right around -1* static camber. We could go a little more, but since it is still heavily street driven we need the best of both worlds. The pictures don't show the threads on the insides or the rubber chunking out across the whole tread. High temperatures and age are the true culprits.

It would definitely look more at home in a stock dash. We had to drill a hole for the anti-spin deal. I will fill that hole with some JB weld or something similar. Not that it will help the look of our beat up dash, but it will make me feel better. They also sell a headlight switch knob to match this one too.

What a great weekend we had at Charlotte. No, the wagon did not make the trip but, we did come home with a T56 to drop into it for next year. I am so excited at the progress that is taking place on the wagon. Tom and Sam deserve all the credit for keeping the cars on the road & track this year and for keeping the upgrades happening. I know we have a lot to do this winter to get things together for next season but, I am already anticipating the fun results from the upgrades.

Tom and Sam loading the T56 into the trunk of the 66. Yes, I said the trunk of the 66! Wow, were fully loading on the ten hour trip home!

Quite a few people already know this, but Deb recently won the drawing for a complete Holley EFI setup at the Pro-Touring dinner during SEMA. She has officially informed me me that we need to do something different than the worn out 327 that's in the wagon now. We have a few plans in mind to house the new EFI, but nothing firm yet. No matter what, I figured it was time to figure out exactly where we we're right now power wise so I drove it up to Norris Motorsports on Friday. Although Mike's clientele is usually a bit higher end, he was kind enough to put it on the dyno for us...

A 383 is a possibility for sure. I hate to be cheap, but if we stick with a one piece rear main seal internally balanced motor we can use the flywheel that came with the T56. $325-$460 savings....

Then because we really wanted a road race oil pan for the "new" engine we purchased this Canton pan that is really designed for a Corvette chassis. The sump is 13" from front to rear so we knew fitment would be an issue.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/01/DSC06063-1.jpg

Solutions; move the motor mount frame stands back 1" and cut a little off the engine crossmember. I've never been a fan of cutting on crossmembers, but I know guys alot smarter than I do it and I'm confident that I can do it without loosing any strength. I'll spare you the pictures of the first attempt where we completed it and it still interfered with the oil pan. Second attempt was much better... I really should know better than to prime and paint something before test fitting! I know the paint is not pretty, but it's the wagon and if anything should stand for "form follows function" it should be that thing!

What seat(s) are you going to run with the T56 change and engine set-back? The bench seat might require a heck of a curved shifter handle..... you may have already said, but I forgot.

Nothing firmed up yet. I planned on a set of ebay seats like we bought for Sam's car, but Debbie said no. We'll probably end up searching the local pic-a-part and pull-a-part to find an oem takeout. No matter what, the bench seat has to go. Deb is done sliding around while cornering!

I actually did a lot of reading about moving the engine back and it's said that moving an inch doesn't do much to help, but in this case it was done more for oil pan clearance than weight distribution. But yes, she will be tearing it up for sure!

True. I think the engine needs to be moved back at least 6" before it starts to make a difference. The cool thing is you can fit the engine in place and have about an extra inch of clearance between the engine and radiator. As all of us early A-body people know too well, the front part of the engine compartment is cramped!

Ok, here's some news that we have been dying to share! Just about a month ago I was looking through our gift certificates from different events and noticed that we had one from Ridetech that was going to expire at the end of 2011. As a matter of fact, we had a few gift certificates from Ridetech. At some point Bret Voelkel had made the mistake of giving me his cell phone number so Sam and I decided to take a picture of all the gift cert's with this message: "Winter wagon upgrades for Deb. ZZ4, Holley EFI, T56, bucket seats and better restraints! Ridetech coilovers??? What do we need, who do we need to talk to and what kind of cash do we need to save up?" We kind of laughed about it and went back to working on Sam's car. About fifteen minutes later this is the reply we got: "We're in Indy today... If we get done early enough I may drop by if you're working on the car" So, long story short, Bret, Sharon and the kids dropped by that night for pizza at the shop. Bret knows the wagon and the way Deb drives it so it was easy to figure out what she needed. Single adjustable coilovers, lower StongArms and all the bracketing for the rear.

Bottom line, this just is another example of the great vendors that support the hobby we love so much! Deb can't wait to get the season started and report back how the improvements work out.

I think it is great on how hotrodding is a family event. I am getting married in july and she likes the rods and the bikes but neither of us have ever been to a event like run to the hills.i did do some barrel racing @ bike week myrtle beach :) i think it would be a great exsperiance for both of us. I couldent be more impressed with RideTech's service and i have told every car guy i know how i am a customer for life just because how they handled it. Thier product is great and it is worth the extra money. I have been working daily on the car tring to get the car ready.I ran the car with the old turbo setup but havent ran it yet with the new turbo setup and serpintine belt setup i built.Motor is still arpart waiting for the new Ross pistons to come in. I have three months and i am hoping to have it painted in time and have the bugs worked out of it for New Jersey. if i do go i might trailer it to Nj just because it might be the maiden voyage and i would hate to break 7 hours from home.

Things have been slow going, but we were able to get the trans and driveshaft tunnel cut out. The driveshaft tunnel really doesn't need to be raised for the T-56 swap, but we figured that as low as this thing sits, it will make it easier to set drive line angle.

To say I am excited about the upgrades to the wagon is an understatement. I have had so much fun driving the wheels off my wagon, that changing components had not really been something that I thought much about until, we changed the power steering pump last year at Run Through the Hills. I felt the difference immediately. I know about running quality parts from our 66. But, like I said I just never really gave it much consideration on the wagon, it was always something that would happen in the future. Winning the Holley EFI system at the Pro-Touring dinner started the upgrade ball rolling to that "future". After basically sitting out of the garage for the last year it has felt good to get back there and begin work on anything but, working on the wagon gives me a different purpose. I can't wait to get it finished and out on the road again. Granted, I will have to relearn how to drive it but, I think I am up for that challenge.

It has felt really good turning wrenches on the wagon. Projects never go as quickly as you think they should though! Unfortunately the wagon is not making the voyage to GG Columbus. But, we have it registered for MotorState so the midnight oil will be burning next week to finish it up. I will hopefully be driving it before then to work out some of the kinks that we know it will have!

Fell behind on updates, but we did get things together enough to make the trip to the Motor State Challenge. Here are some pictures to bring things up to date.

We replaced the old "metric" rear brakes with C4 calipers and the drilled and slotted 12" rotors that came off our 66.

Once the new driveshaft was installed we realized that the tunnel under the rear seat needed to be raised too. Deb used the plasma cutter to cut out the old tunnel and then formed the sheet metal for the new one.

We needed a shift handle and I had a nice piece of surplus military curved aluminum sitting around. I still can't believe I was able to cut it on the bandsaw and successfully thread it. We also had this cool shifter boot that Sam picked up used last year. Sure it was for his car but we can get another one by the time he needs it...

Still more progress pictures to share, but the bottom line is that we trailered it up to Motor State (Sam and I drove the 66). We bled the brakes, changed oil and checked the timing Friday so it would be ready for Saturday and Sunday. Deb drove it hard both days and had a blast!

Any updates on the long roof....

The wagon will get some work this winter, but for now it's getting stored in the shed until the we get a bunch of other projects completed.

* New clutch disc and pressure plate
* Upper and lower A-arms
* Build a new harness bar that will let the seats go back further
* Fine tune rear wheel back-spacing
* Build some sort of access panel for the fuel cell

Believe it or not, the wagon actually made the Pro-Touring calendar! Deb is willing to autograph March for anyone who asks... LOL!

Well, the wagon sure has taken a back seat to the 66 over the winter but absolutely needed a few things done before taking it to the Heidts event next weekend. Obviously after running it fairly hard at four events last year it needed a thorough bolt tightening and general inspection, oil change and lube, new harness bar built, new front tires (had been rubbing on the inner fenders) and most importantly, have the flywheel resurfaced and replace the clutch disc and pressure plate.

All was going pretty well until we pulled the transmission and noticed that the throwout bearing guide tube was broken off and just flopping around on the input shaft. After an emergency text message to Mark Bowler on Sunday I realized we had a problem. Note: Important smart people should never give me their cell numbers... Make a phone call to RPM transmissions in Anderson, Indiana this morning and they had the part. Ran up there this afternoon and should get the trans back together tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully back in the car too.

New harness bar so Sam and I can confortably drive the wagon. Deb was fine with the old one...
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/DSC08569_zps18111370-1.jpg (http://s205.photobucket.com/user/tommycomfort/media/64%20wagon%20driving-project/DSC08569_zps18111370.jpg.html)

I think Deb and Sam ride the clutch ride the clutch too much and this is the result. Easy to blame other people!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/DSC08572_zps45ba6bd3-1.jpg (http://s205.photobucket.com/user/tommycomfort/media/64%20wagon%20driving-project/DSC08572_zps45ba6bd3.jpg.html)

It was hard to tell the guide tube was broken.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/05/DSC08604_zpscf128ca6-1.jpg (http://s205.photobucket.com/user/tommycomfort/media/64%20wagon%20driving-project/DSC08604_zpscf128ca6.jpg.html)

I built this bracket to hold the trans while we took the mid-plate off. Normally special tools take way too long to build, but this one was fairly quick.

Deb was super excited when I got the speed wrench out to remove the bolts. Weird!

We installed a piece of 3/16 steel in the B-pillar that the harness bar bolts to. We had purchased a Carey Bender with 1.5" die back when we did the 66 harness bar. Nothing too fancy but definitely solid.

It's been a couple of weeks since we ran the cars at Midwest Musclecar Challenge and I'm just getting around to posting pictures. The wagon did great with Deb, Sam and I all driving it some. Deb and Sam did the bulk of the driving. We're still finding run slips that the SCCA provides, but so far we have come up with 121 for two days, two cars and three drivers. We could have had more, but swapping drivers just took extra time and at some points we were just worn out and took breaks.

Lined up all the tickets for a picture with the award that the 66 won.

Time for another change to the wagon! The single adjustable Ridetech coilovers have been working great and Deb and Sam who do most of the driving love them. But, the opportunity to make the switch to a nearly complete DSE setup came up and we jumped on it. The new setup will be using AFCO double adjustable shocks and have remote canisters up front. We already have the current Ridetech setup earmarked for a future project that should be entertaining for everyone.
