Does anyone own one? I'm thinking of getting one, or at least an Explorer Sport (same 4.0 drivetrain 4x4) or even a 4.0 5spd auto Ranger (2001+). Interested in hearing feedback about these..thanks.

The biggest complaint I've heard about the Sport Trac is the lack of usable bed space. If you don't intend on carrying anything larger than a few suitcases you should be fine.
The new gen Sport Tracs, or whatever they're called now, appear to be a little larger.

I've got two friends that have 'em and love 'em. One complains about lack of bed space the other doesn't care. Actually the one friend came by and picked up my wife for work this morning in it as it is 4x4 we have about 9 inches of snow over night. Wife called from work and said it drove through the snow without any problems

I have a 2002 Ranger extended cab 4X4 with the 4.0 auto. It has 185K miles on it and still runs like a champ. If I had to guess, the first thing to go on mine will be the transmission, it's starting to shift a little sluggish when it's cold, but nothing that worries me yet. Mileage is about as bad as a full-sized truck at 17mpg or so, but I don't drive it every day so I don't really care about that. Other than that, it's a great truck.

It mostly depends on your intended use.

Sounds consistent to what I'm hearing... thanks.

If you get something with the 4.0L check the inquire about the water pump if its been replaced or not. A friend of mine had a 2k ranger edge xcab 4x4 5spd that the water pump went out on and he didnt notice it till the truck stopped running.turns out if you over heat that engine it makes the timing chain become brittle..then bad things happen.

about the only real bad thing i have heard is that they do not get the mpg's they should.... for being a mid size, they should get 20 + all the time and sleldom do. it that is not an issue for you and it has been well cared for i would not be scared of them.

Yep... I've heard the mgp's are 14-16mpg combined... pretty cummy for a midsize!

The new gen's are nothing to write home about as far as space is concerned. That sport truck version is pretty sick looking, but i drove one w/ the v8 at a dealership. They're really nice all around, but wont fit much in the back of the bed. I don't really get the point of it having a bed.

Because not everyone needs to haul a stack of 4x8 drywall. I'd rather have the cab space and still be able to haul landscape materials, car parts, furniture, etc.

I bought a Sport Trac new in 2004.
It is great.
There is nothing that I haven't been able to haul with it, with the tailgate down and the cage in place it makes for a 6' bed.
Recently brought home a 6' tall, 60 gallon dual stage Ingersoll Rand compressor in the back.
I don't know what I would do without it.

LOL on "don't really get the point of it having a bed"

oh i know, but they make rubber mats for the storage spot of an SUV. Some of which are contoured in a way that they wont leak landscape materials/oil onto the carpet and can be easily pulled out. And most suv's have some sort of fold-down seat option that'll work for furniture.

JMO. Its kind of what stopped me from buying one/or a similar crewcab truck.

Yes but furniture and SUV's aren't a good mix. Odd shapes never work well with a roof line or hatch.. I just prefer a bed where the skys the limit and I can leave the tailgate down.
