i bought a sbc with a 6-71 blower and i got a good deal on it. my buddy and i dropped it in ourselves but we have little mechanical skill. we were able to get it in just with the help of all of you guys on this forum. now that its in i can get it running but here is what happened... it idles pretty high regardless of where the idle screws are set and it will run for a little while (20 seconds or so) and then it sputters and wants to die. i also think it might be running a little lean. i am wondering if maybe i have a vacuum leak somewhere? i ran the line for the boost gauge but the gauge is not installed so i am wondering if it could be sucking air from that spot or should that not make a difference? I've adjusted the timing fast and slow and cant seem to just get it to idle correctly. please help! AHHHH!

sounds like maybe a vac leak. get the carb cleaner out and spray around the intake, carb, etc and see where the idle changes. is that line capped?

no the boost line is not capped. i cant get it running well enough to be able to get out of the car and mess with the tuning. it revs, then it boggs, then it dies, etc...

You need to cap that line. It is causing a vac leak @ idle and an escape for the boost (if you can ever get it start to rev up).

would that cause high idle or lean condition? put the gauges in this weekend so i am going to try again tomorrow.

It would cause both high idle and a lean condition, yes. Plug that line!
