I know lots of people that would be extraordinarily excited to see an autoX incorporated into the weekend

See now that is the kind of thing i need to hear. The trick is that those events cost like $150 or so and if you get too many people your tires are always cold too few and you lose your ass cause the track costs are not covered. I inquired to try and put one together in year 2. I could not get the answers I needed though. Need a host club with the cones and timing equipment for starters. I will look at seriously adding it in 2012 if we can gather some support for it.

I remember when the autocross was supposed to happen 2 years ago. My cousin and I were going to sign up, but then we saw that the autocross was cancelled.

If you could follow the car show mini-autocross format, it should be doable. For 150 dollars, people expect a full on trackday. The autox price would have to at least be comparable an SCCA or club autocross event. Priced right with some promotion on sites like these, it shouldn't be too hard to get a decent turnout.

I am all for it, but the issue was insurance and the help I was getting was flakey at best. I will look into it in more detail for next year. I really want to do it, but it needs to be done right.

Liking I'm reading. I'd much rather autoX that drag race.

Let me ask you this. Do you know any car clubs that have the timing equipment and cones in or around the LA area that could help with the execution of such an event? I do not have the manpower to do it currently nor the experience (yet).

I'm going either way, but I'd down for an autox. I'd be glad to help, though I do not have any experience running racing events, just shows.

It looks like I may need some extra help this year with the car show. Chuck Felton who has been a tremendous help every year is working on the east coast and will not be around this year. He has been instrumental in coordinating the car show for me. So I am trying to find someone to help in that regard. Let me know if you are interested and we can talk.

I am working on some things that would make and auto-x possible next year, I will make an announcement about it if I get it all pulled together.

have you tried contacting the local SCCA group?

I did just recently and right now my message is getting bounced around until hits the right person. I have had a few of them forward the message to others. who knows maybe there is still enough time to pull it off this year.

Ironically, the email from the right guy was waiting in my inbox. Sounds like they have a lot going on the weekend before and after. I answered his questions and had a few, so I will have to see what his reply is now.

Ok well I am doing me Due Diligence to get the info together for an autocross. Help me out here.

Is 75 cars acceptable as a limit?
will you get enough runs in?
Are you guys ok with working an event like this i.e. 2 groups, one runs while the other help out (monitor the cones, hand out time slips, etc...) then switch up
is $75 an acceptable price?

I would think the Monday (the holiday) is the better day to do it. Sunday is pretty hectic as is.

75 as the minimum or maximum?
will depend on ^^^
work assignments are how the scca does their events. I think it's reasonable to expect that from people.
$75 is probably alright if we can gaurantee 12+ runs

75 would be the max.

I take it the site was down yesterday, i could not get on.

Well i will be taking a big risk by doing this because it is not a money maker. I will need to sell out 75 spots. I am waiting on the SCCA, but I am also looking into other groups that can host an Auto cross as well in case they say they can't help.

I will utilize all of my resources once I confirm this (online ads, the email list, autocross forums, specific car clubs) but i am going to need your guys help as well to get people signed up for this part of the event. I am thinking the Monday is best because the street cars typically will drag race on sunday in the TNT. So there is a greater chance to get some of them out to try this on Monday. Personally I have always wanted to do it, just never got around to it.

Like I said before, I am down for the Autocross. Drag on Sunday, autocross on Monday. As for the car show, I'd be happy to help and way I can. I might even be able to get a parts vendor or two to sign on, if desired. I'll send you a PM.

Mark, I suggest PMing Larry Callahan to see if he can rally the PT folks. This site is mostly filled with people who like to autoX so having one will really help to bring out the PT contingent. Also, he may know of people in the area with timing equipment.

As far as cars, it's possible you'll get the full 75 (not sure though), but even so, I think 8-10 runs is doable with a well run operation. It also depends on the layout of the course. Will it be a ~30sec run or a ~50sec run? One car on course at a time or enough room for 2?

Ok well I sent him a PM, that is not the first time I was told to contact him lol, i can take a hint. At this point while all the details are not finalized, I feel a lot more confident that we can make this happen than I did 2 years ago.

Is there any rules regarding convertibles? do they require a rollbar?

I believe the SCCA allows convertibles with or without rollbars

Contact the Calclub guys:

http://www.calclub.com/

They have SCCA clubs that have the timing equipment and experience of course setup and event coordination. I would run your own people for tech(SOME of those SCCA guys go overboard), and get track insurance sorted out. I think that a 75 car field would be incredibly easy to manage of the price was right. I would aim for a mildly technical 45 second course, that you can run 2 at a time. The hard part is finding people to work the course.

Good luck on getting this going! Ill be there if the price is decent, and I could help tech if Im short on cash.

Mark,
You know where to find the AZ crew if you need a count of how many of us will be doing this. Personally, I'd prefer to do this on Sunday over Monday but that's just personal preference.... and knowledge of what goes in the evening fruit punch..

I don't know what to tell you guys. I contacted the SCCA locally and got nothing. I tried another company and got the "give me a couple of days to get back to you" and I still got nothing despite a couple of follow ups on my part!

This is why it fell apart in 2009. I still plan to do this one day when I gain a little experience myself and can afford to buy the cones and timing equipment myself. I am not a fan of being Dependant on others.

Sorry I really tried. The only way I could justify it now is if you can help me get 75 signed up and I will buy the equipment and then help me run it. i.e course design, event timing etc...
Hell then we could do more throughout the year and reduce the cost.

Good call Rick. The VCC has a really good system, and they know how to use it.

I am sorry to report that I was unable to get the autocross again this year due to the late start.

However with that said, I now have all the connections to make it happen at future events. I am trying to see about having another one in Oct.

For autocross you may want to check with Chad at bangshift.com

He does a lot of autocross anouncing for the goodguys show which adds a fun element to it. He may also be the guy with the timing gear. The nice thing about them is the digital read out of your time at the end of each run so you don't have to worry about time slips and what not.

Could also check with the guys at Orange County Race Craft next time too.

So I took a ride this weekend on the Autocross course and I promise we will be doing this at future events! I love a good 4 wheel slide.

For now, just have to enjoy the cruise, car show and drag racing.
