Ok If I am to go an EFI conversion I need to get a fuel pump capable of doing so. From what I am told the in tank pumps are the better way to go. If that's incorrect set me straight. If not my question is can I take the stock sending unit out of my tank which is in a 1984 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser wagon, and then drop in a fuel pump and sending unit? Aren't the areas where the sending units go the same as the in tank pumps? The holes and locking rings look similar. Any help is really helpful. It would save me buying a tank.

Yes the in tank is the better set up and it can be done, using a LS1 fuel pump module, like this.

This link has some good photos.

The access hole for the LS1 pump is larger at 3.875 in.
The LS1 pump can be compressed between 10 3/8" and 9 1/4" tall. Depending upon the depth of the 84 Olds tank determines whether or no you will have to sump the tank or not.
The fuel level sender is another consideration. The Olds is most likely a 0-90 ohm while the LS1 is 40-240 ohm. The above link to the H body forums mentions sources for the correct sender. They are available for about $ 100.00
