Let the Project Begin
Posted: Jan 13, 2011 www.2ndchancecamaro.com

After some time off I've decided to jump back into it full steam ahead and not look back. Carter Hickman (http://www.carterhickmandesigns.com/) and I have been talking about this car for over 2 years now and it's finally time that I start sharing the pictures and the build up of what should be a pretty cool car. The goal with this car is to build a car that anyone can build but of course put all of my little idea's into that will set it apart from the crowd.

My goal is to teach you what I have learned from my last build www.syborgtwinturbo.com and show you how to save money or in some instances and spend more just because you "need " to have the coolest parts on the planet.

The platform for the this build is of course a 1970 Camaro. Why because parts are readily available and that is important if your building on a budget. The goal would be to find the cleanest car you can find and one that needs the least amount of body work. That being said Ron Wilson from www.hoodpins.net helped me find this little gem in California. He has had a long history with the car and it seems like a pretty solid car.

more to come.....

Since Ron new the last two owners they were able to dig up some pictures of the car from what we think was the early 90's.

I don't know if you can do better than stock. That thing was awesome!

Can't wait to see this one come together.

love the rendering w/ the standard camaro nose and full bumper; too many people put the RS bumpers on and it ruins the look IMO. the full RS nose is great, but it's refreshing when you see the regular one too!
the flat hood looks great also!

2nd Chance Camaro - Finding the Right Camaro

Finding the Right Camaro
Posted: Jan 19, 2011 www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Looking back at old pictures is always fun. What is really cool is when you fast forward 18 years and some things
haven't changed. This is true for the 70 Camaro Ron from www.hoodpins.net was able to locate for me. I know in the
last pictures the car was cream in color and this picture it's blue. Shortly after Doug (2nd owner) brought the car home
he repainted it and swapped in a 383 Stroker motor. Here is a picture of the car after he repainted it looks pretty good.

picture from 1992

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/01/20151220203841e5f7194dme-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/01/2015122020384254e67fa5me-1.jpg

A quick call to Jam'e at Browns Auto Transport (http://www.brownsautotransport.com/) and the pick was scheduled.

Like I previous said some things never change. Eighteen years later and here is what the car looked like getting ready to get loaded on a trailer and make it way back to the Midwest. First thing I thought of when I saw this picture was I really need to go rent the movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" again. Hey, it's a cult classic ....

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/01/2015122020390622d0968cme-1.jpg

48 Hours later and the great people from Browns Auto Transport (http://www.brownsautotransport.com/)showed up at my work to deliver the car. The drivers first comment to me was, "man is the floor in this car solid."

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/01/201512202039109cb56bdeme-1.jpg

Not much has changed under this car from the day it was delivered and that was exactly what I was looking for. It does however
have a really nice 3" dual Exhaust. Anyone need a complete dual exhaust & headers for a small block 2nd gen.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/01/201512202039083d7c9341me-1.jpg

Brought the car home - Opps forget to tell the wife. Remember it's easier to ask for forgiveness then permission.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/01/20151220203912d8a9a323me-1.jpg

Looks like I have to pick which one I am going to work on first. One option would be sell Ron the Green one and I build the blue one with Kenny. Should be fun and Interesting.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/01/201512202039142a1a44d5me-1.jpg

So what are the build plans -- you ask. What is it going to look like when it's complete? You are going to have to watch this
build closely and you will find out. At least you can tell that it will have Billet Specialties wheels on it.

Here is the last and final rendering that Carter from Carter Hickman Design (http://www.carterhickmandesigns.com/wordpress/)did for me & Kenny (http://www.kdhotrods.com).

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/01/20151220204257dd021d8ame-1.jpg

I can tell you this car is going to have the new Ride Tech (http://ridetech.com/)Coil Over Suspension on it and it's pretty awesome.

2nd Chance Camaro - The Teardown has finally started

The Teardown has finally started
Posted: Feb 09, 2011 www.2ndchancecamaro.com

In order to keep the back half of my garage heated a couple years ago I installed a Curtain Wall. This has probably been one of the best "Garage" investments I have made to date. Especially when my wife starts the cars in the front half of the garage and leave's the door open for 15 minutes. The back half stays nice and warm. I may even install an Air conditioning unit this summer.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/02/201512202039231edf89a1me-1.jpg

When I am in the garage working on the car or one of the bikes hanging from the ceiling I slide the curtain to the side and I am back to an 800 square foot garage.

2nd Chance Camaro - Removing the Front Clip & Exhaust

Removing the Front Clip & Exhaust
Posted: April 26, 2011 www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Okay it's time to start posting some pictures.

Since safety is a big concern for me. The first thing I did was make a quick call to Race Ramps. I ordered up a set of 12" fixed height wheel cribs and an adjustable set of 12" wheel cribs. It's amazing how nice these cribs are.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/201512202039596df8660ame-1.jpg

With the car on the wheel cribs I was able to get under the car and inspect the floors and work out a game plan. The first thing I need to do was remove the exhaust as I had already sold it and then start looking for rust problems.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/2015122020400145236b12me-1.jpg

Scott (proTour73) was kind enough to come over and lend me a helping hand. He said it brought back memories of his restoration. Scott had the front end off in no time. I think he was hungry and I told him I was buying lunch at the local Mexican Restaurant so he worked really fast.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/20151220204006c3d4e583me-1.jpg

Found some rust. Time to see if I can find some NOS sheet metal.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/20151220204011cd674cdbme-1.jpg

You can see that Scott had the front clip completely removed before I figured out how to get the exhaust off in one piece. It almost made it up and over the rear differential. Sadly I had to remove it so I could get the exhaust out. Not a big deal as all of the bolts came off with ease.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/2015122020401562bc2721me-1.jpg

After a good days hard work this is what we ended up with. Not bad for 2 guys in 4 hours and that included lunch.

Engine & Transmission Removal -/- G-Force Crossmember
Posted: May 13, 2011 www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Happy Friday the 13th to all of my friends

Since the rear differential had to be removed so we could remove the exhaust. I figured I would install a set of 3" lowering block so I could get an idea as to how low the car was going to be once I installed the new Ride-Tech suspension.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/20151220204026a1738b4fme-1.jpg

This is exactly the height I am looking for with the car. Low enough to look cool and still plenty of clearance to be able to be driven on the streets near me.

A couple years ago I had the pleasure to meet Stacy David (( http://gearztv.com/ )). Talk about a down to earth nice guy. I had just watched his show and they introduced a new product from G-Froce Crossmember www.crossmembers.com . He said it was a super nice product and I should look them up on my next project. So I took his advise and I called the Guys at G-Force crossmembers. I told them about my project and they said they had a crossmember that would work perfectly.

One week later this crossmember showed up at my shop.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/201512202043468d6dcae4me-1.jpg

2nd Chance Camaro - Cleaning & more Cleaning & New LS1
Cleaning & more Cleaning & New LS1
Posted: May 25, 2011 www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Morning all,

Since I am not a big fan of a dirty work shop it was important to me to get the chassis as clean as I could. Before I began mocking up parts on the car. I spent a few hours with my daughters cleaning all of the oil & grime off the subframe. Seems they are more then willing to spray a cleaner on the car, but not so willing to scrub the grime off the car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/20151220204103f6687afcme-1.jpg

I stripped as many parts as I could off the subframe before the cleaning actually started.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/2015122020414321421c41me-1.jpg

Safety Safety Safety. I can't tell you how much I like the Race Ramp safety block they built for me. Gives you a little more confidence when your working on the car in the garage by yourself. I surely don't want any of my family members to every find me stuck or godd forbid dead under my car.

I removed the drives side coil spring without any problems. However, next time I am going to just cut the coil springs instead of using a spring compressor. My wonderful Snap On spring compressor actually broke when I was removing the passenger side coil spring and of course I was straddling the spindle when it let go. Talk about scaring the crap out of me.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/20151220204147ea2c90b7me-1.jpg

No Reason for this picture other then the floating wrench.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/20151220204151c033e1d4me-1.jpg

The previous owner was unable to figure out why the car wouldn't start. I have a good guess as to why it wouldn't start. When the motor mount broke it also took out the fuel line.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/201512202041540cab5b1fme-1.jpg

Finally ready for cleaning.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/2015122020420232ed4cd8me-1.jpg

Engine degreaser and a some good old elbow grease.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/20151220204206921c4037me-1.jpg

All done and ready to play with some new Parts.

When I took out the old shims I put them back in the same location. It's a good place to start with the alignment.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/201512202042111791d89fme-1.jpg

More parts to pack up and take to my warehouse. I am running out of space in my garage.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/2015122020421553d865d1me-1.jpg

Time to open up some of my Christmas Presents.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/20151220204221a5486299me-1.jpg

Passenger arms went on smooth as butter. I would have worked on the other side but the guys were going for a ride so off to the trails I go.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/201512202042255a9b7b93me-1.jpg

I spoke with Travis ( Kenny Davis Hot Rods ) and he told me he had an LS1 sitting in the shop and I could buy it. So I bought it and two weeks later it was in my warehouse with all of my other parts.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/2015122020385399e99767me-1.jpg

The motor has about 9,000 miles on it and should be perfect for this build.
Anyone need a set of Z06 Exhaust Manifolds

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/2015122020385789772205me-1.jpg

and I found another thing my daughters like to do.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/20151220204106cfbfcf90me-1.jpg

Yep they painted the transmission housing.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/201512202041100982f90bme-1.jpg

As I said is past posts. I've been collecting parts for this car for years. I pick up this intake from Barry Grant he had

listed it on lateral-g.net and I new I was going to need one for my next build.

So on the shelf it went.

Billet 2nd Gen Front Mount Battery Tray

Good Morning all,

It's amazing what collects inside of these cars. Hard to believe the passenger side was full of vegetation and it had little more then surface rust. So far I am very happy with this car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/06/20151220204114c08ab4ebme-1.jpg

Top side of the Quarters have some surface rust. Shouldn't be a problem for the media Blaster.

All that is left for me to remove is the rear bumper and Deck lid. Then I can actually start mocking things up on the car. I can't wait !!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/06/20151220204130d8a9bcddme-1.jpg

At some point in this cars life it took a little hit to the drivers side rear. The body work they did back then was not that good as you can see in the pictures below.

New Project - Billet Battery Tray ( www.hoodpins.net)

Since this car is truly going to be a driver and I really couldn't care less about putting the battery in the trunk. I wanted a nice billet battery tray up front to put an Optima battery in. So I called up Ron at www.hoodpins.net and told him that we need to make a billet battery tray. He agree and off he went to his computer.

Here are a couple pictures of the prototype.

2nd Chance Camaro - Installing the Ride Tech Front Suspension

Installing the Ride Tech Front Suspension & DEI Boom Mat
Posted: July 25, 11 www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Morning all,

Steady working on the car just haven't had the time to post up pictures it's hard to believe how far behind I am on updates.

Some of the little things you need to do when installing the Ride Tech lower controls arms. You are going to have to trim the rubber grease boot so they can tuck nicely in the lower arm ball joint pocket. Ride-Tech did a nice job planning for this.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/07/2015122020422706047591me-1.jpg

Once Installed they look perfect.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/07/201512202042301dae6b00me-1.jpg

The upper arm went on just as easy as the lower arm on the passenger side.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/201512202042255a9b7b93me-1.jpg

I wanted to know what the ride height would be once I put the car back on the ground. So I asked Dennis over High Speed Welding made me up a couple mock up shock rods so I could set the ride height.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/07/20151220204240ea703d4dme-1.jpg

When I went to install the lower control arm on the drivers side the bushing didn't fit in the frame. Most likely because the car still had it's original bushings and they just kept tightening the bolt to take up slack in the worn out bushings.

This is a cool little tool I made up years ago when working on Syborg. Just slip it in and open up the bolts evenly and it will do a good job of keeping everything square. Just make sure the washers are large enough to distribute the pressure.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/07/20151220204243fc521b16me-1.jpg

Make sure you opened the gap up at least a 1/4" further then you need as the metal will spring back.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/07/2015122020424519da4c53me-1.jpg

Lower control arm fit right in after I spread the lower control arm pocket

Funny in the old days ( late 80's - early 90's ) I would have got out the dead blow hammer and just beat it in. Most likely damaging the paint, the bolts and my skin. However hitting things with a hammer sometimes just make you feel better.

Checking the fully compressed height - wow is the car going to be low.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/07/20151220204256ae4e673cme-1.jpg

When I was at the Good Guys Columbus show I headed over to DEI to check out there new sound & heat insulation product. Talk about a full line of stuff at 1/2 the cost of other guys. I can't wait to start installing this stuff.

2nd Chance Camaro - Pypes LS1 Block & G-Force Crossmember Install

Pypes LS1 Block & G-Force Crossmember Install
Posted: Sept 026 11 www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Instead of installing the LS1 block with a cherry picker I ordered up a Pypes mock up block from www.summitracing.com . Cool product just horrible shipping box as it took 3 of them to get me one that wasn't cracked. All they
did was drop it in a box and ship it ( these were drop shipped direct from Pypes not Summit Racing ) without any packing material.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/201512202043380ea10dc8me-1.jpg

Picked up a set of American Made Engine set back plates from Edelbrock.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/20151220204342e0992dfeme-1.jpg

Here is picture of block #3 from Pypes. Seems they are aware of the problem and it there solution is drywall screws and epoxy. I kept this one as it was the best of the 3.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/201512202043490995d831me-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/20151220204354336c39b7me-1.jpg

Set back plates worked great. I still have to move the factory Stands back about an inch so the cross member bolts line up.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/20151220204407f28607e5me-1.jpg

Installed the G-Force Cross member and talk about a great fit. There is plenty of clearance and the lowest point doesn't hang below the stock Sub-Frame.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/201512202044116a7de646me-1.jpg

I need to move the motor back about an inch. Really happy as there is plenty of room up front to move the motor back.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/20151220204414d5dee6f8me-1.jpg

Since the car will be sitting pretty low with the new Ride-Tech Coil-Over suspension I wanted to make sure the cross member wouldn't hit the ground and the guys at G-Force did a great job.

Hauling the 2nd Chance Camaro to US Collision

Posted: Oct 14, 2011 www.2ndchancecamaro.com
Good Morning All,

The car is finally ready to make the journey to US Collision so I enlisted the help of my oldest daughter. She was more then confident she would be
able to handle the task of helping Dad get the car into the Trailer.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201103052ndChanceCamaro05-1.jpg

She did great the car went in without a hitch.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201103052ndChanceCamaro08-1.jpg

Mario was surprises to see how good the car looked. However there is still paint on the car and you never know what it's going to
look like under the paint.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201103052ndChanceCamaro09-1.jpg

Back in my Garage I needed to make a front end dolly so we could move the car around at Mario's once we removed the subframe.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201103092ndChance7-1.jpg

Flash forward one week and Mario was kind enough to let me come over and work on the car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201103132ndChanceCamaro2-1.jpg

JR helped me strip down the Sub Frame so we could put in the back of my Tahoe since I was to lazy to go grab my trailer.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201103132ndChanceCamaro3-1.jpg

We mounted the new dolly so Mario can tuck the car under his 69 Camaro Project. You have got to take a minute to go look at the build thread
on his 69 Camaro. That car is going to be over the top cool.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201103132ndChanceCamaro6-1.jpg

Finally started bringing parts home from my warehouse. No matter how big your garage is you always want more space.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201105042ndChanceCamaro012-1.jpg

My youngest decided she was going to help dad install the Edelbrock Shorty Headers. As you can see she believes in Safety First.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201105292ndChanceCamaro1-1.jpg

In order to tuck the exhaust on 2nd Gen. Camaro's you are going to need Shorty headers. Edelbrock headers are American Made and the only
choice for this project. They will only need a minor modification on the one side.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201105292ndChanceCamaro3-1.jpg

Both my girls are hard workers and always willing to lend a hand sooner or later I am going to get my wife to come out to
the garage to work on this car.

Cutting out the Stock Wheel Tubs at US Collision

Posted: Oct 26, 2011 www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Morning All,

Now that the Camaro is at Mario's we can start getting the car ready for the new BF Goodrich KDW2
Tires. The plan for the car is to be street worthy and not look like every other Camaro being built right
now. First and foremost it has to be comfortable to drive and not attract the attention of every Law
Enforcement officer on the road.

Mario did all the work getting the tubs removed and trust me I heard all about how the instructions
sucked and that the DVD wasn't much help either. So I did jump in the car and headed over to his
shop and together we were able to figure out what they wanted us to do.

Step 1:
Trim using the provided templates

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201103132ndChanceCamaro7-1.jpg

Step 2. Cutting the floor.
It doesn't have to be a snug tight fit as the new piece that you will be welding to the floor will take up
some of the gap. Also when you clamp the new wheel tub to the vertical piece it will close up any gap
that may be there. (( Picture will be posted later ))

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201103132ndChanceCamaro8-1.jpg

Mario doing what he does best -- did I mention he called me and my car a bunch of names.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201103242ndChance4-1.jpg

Step 3: Remove Wheel Tub
Make sure there is plenty of clearance to get the new tubs in. That's it - it's that simple.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201103242ndChance5-1.jpg

Step Four: Final Test Fit
Make sure you can slide the new tub in and out easily. If not remove more metal.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201103242ndChance7-1.jpg

Mario did his best to take a couple pictures. Seems Kenny and him are both Experts on the Camera.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/201103252ndChanceCamaroUSCollision003-1.jpg

Next step is to haul the car to Pro-Tek Powder Coating to for Media Blasting.

All I can say is Mario is a great guy and I can't wait to ride with him to BBT Fab. I am certain that
ride is going to be entertaining.

Bringing the 2nd Chance Camaro home
Posted: Nov 01, 2011* www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Morning All,

Now that the car is heading home it's time to explain the build of this car. The goal is simple, build a car that anyone can build using as many bolt on as possible.

Where most people make mistakes is they take on way more then they can handle. I've seen people spend thousand on the latest and greatest bolt on part only to realize they don't have the time, tool, skills or funds to complete the project. I've had people tell me they just bought a new subframe and they plan to install it over the weekend in there garage. A couple months later I find out that they have finally given up on there project and it's 4-sale for penny's on the dollar.

So my advise is.
Be realistic in what you buy, do you really need it and do you have time & skill to actually put that part on your car. If you don't have a lot of free time in your life and you want a suspension upgrade. There are plenty bolt on front end kits available.

Picture Time - Mario cleaning out the inside of the car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201103262ndChanceCamaro01-1.jpg

That would be Scott (proTour73) reading a magazine while Mario & I look at the car. Seems Scott already been down this road and is more interested in the latest issue of Hot Rod.* Just kidding Scott

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201103262ndChanceCamaro03-1.jpg

The car shell looks really nice and there are only a few spots that will need rust & dent repair.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201103262ndChanceCamaro06-1.jpg

One modification that I can't live without is mini-tubs I want plenty of tire clearance. The plan is either to run a 295 35 18 or 335 35 18 BFG KDW 2 tire on the back of the car. I am leaning more towards the 295 since the plan is to actually drive this car. Bigger isn't always better plus going to the 12" rim cost $1000 more and the tires cost about $500 more.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201103262ndChanceCamaro09-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201103262ndChanceCamaro10-1.jpg

Next Step is to put it on the Rotisserie so I can have iPro-Tek Powder Coating in Joliet, IL and have it media blaste. I really want to see what is hiding under the paint and take care of the rust on the underside of the roof.

Size Does Matter- Which in the end might not Matter
Posted: Nov 04, 2011 www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Last week I was looking at the tires stored in Mario's 69 Camaro. I couldn't help but notice that his tire looked skinny compared to the 335 BFG tire sitting in my garage. I kept telling Mario that my 335 was much bigger then his 345 and he said no way. So I took his tire home to find out if I was correct. I figured a side by side test would be the only way to prove that the BFG KDW 2 are indeed bigger.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/20111025bfgmichelincompare003-1.jpg

The BFG 335 height compared to the BFG 295 - you can see the difference is much greater

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201110222ndchancecamarobfgtirecompare1-1.jpg

Also the height is much taller on the Michelin.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/20111025bfgmichelincompare004-1.jpg

The plan has to been to run the 295's on the street and the 335's for Good-Guys events. In the end I may only be able to run the 295 on the back of 2nd Chance Camaro because I can't get the bracket from DSE

.
Why you ask ?
The Mini-Tubs I purchased from DSE will fit the 335's. However, since I didn't buy there complete leaf spring conversion kit I am unable to purchase the front offset sping pocket I need to complete the conversion. Where I am confused is I can buy offset shackle & spring perch's but not the lower spring pocket - odd. I had the Allen (really nice sales guy) ask Kyle if I could purchase them and Kyle said no dice which kinda sucks.

So now I may be forced to run only the 295's full time. So Buyer Beware if buy the DSE Mini-Tubs you are going to have to make your own lower mounts for the front or by one of there 3 kits DSE offers. Sometimes you win sometimes you lose.

I do have a couple Options
Option A:
Buy there Mini-Tub Kit # 041221 $1699.00 which doesn't include Leaf Springs & Shocks which will give you an 1.5" drop and then sell the other parts you don't need. Seems expensive but it's only money and you can't take it with you.

Option B:
Would be to have a local fab shop make a set of offset shackle mounts to complete the conversion. If I go this route I will make a couple extra to help out the two other guys I know that are in the same boat as me.

Looks like the teardown is coming along great. And there's still plenty of room in the garage for all those new parts! Keep the pictures coming.

Putting the Car on the Rotisserie
*Posted: Nov Oct 31, 2011 www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Time has finally come to get the car on the rotisserie. I really want to see what is hiding under the 40 year old paint job. Mario from US Collision was kind enough to loan me his rotisserie as we are really trying to keep this car on a budget.

We made a couple modification to Rotisserie to make sure the car was securely mounted and wouldn't fall on Jay the media blaster. He's got a family and I wouldn't want to be the guy who's car fell on him crushing him.* First thing we did was to add legs to the Front End Dolly so we could slide the car onto the lift instead of bolting it directly to the lift.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201104052ndChanceCamaro1-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201104052ndChanceCamaro2-1.jpg

I purchased the larger tube from a trailer shop. They use it to make trailer hitches so there is no seam on the inside and it make for a nice tight fit.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201104052ndChanceCamaro3-1.jpg

Once I hauled the car over to High Speed Welding Dennis quickly made up these support brackets to take the load off the lower body mounts. It's amazing how much the chassis mounts flexed or should I say bend when it's be supported by the factory mounts.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201104082ndChanceCamaro4-1.jpg

Getting the rear on the Rotisserie was pretty easy with the help of a chain hoist and a couple guys from the shop. However, It did cost me breakfast and yes that is the subframe back from Pro-Tek. Super Clean and getting ready for some clean up work.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201104092ndChanceCamaro1-1.jpg

In the rear we used the rear spring shackle mount to anchor the car to the rotisserie.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201104092ndChanceCamaro3-1.jpg

Four Hours later back in the trailer and heading to Pro-Tek Powder Coating to get stripped off all it's paint.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201104092ndChanceCamaro6-1.jpg

Dennis also put a couple extra welds on to prevent the car from sliding around. When the car is off the lift for the last time I will just grind the welds off and it will be back to the way it was when I picked it up from Mario.

ProTek Powder Coating Time for Media Blasting
Posted: Nov Nov 16, 2011 www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Morning,

The car is in the hands of Jay over at ProTek Media blasting. In a couple days we are finally going to know what is hiding under what's left of the paint.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201104122ndChanceCamaro2-1.jpg

You can see the car took a small hit on the Drivers Side rear but it*doesn't look to bad.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201104122ndChanceCamaro6-1.jpg

Mario & I both agreed that I should look for a new rear panel since this one is to far gone. Time to see if Tom from Courtyard Camaro (( [email protected]*)) *has a NOS piece he is willing to sell. If you need Camaro parts he is your guy.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201104122ndChanceCamaro7-1.jpg

We've got a few holes to fix*from previous body work.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/11/201104122ndChanceCamaro9-1.jpg

Really, right on the body line - that stinks.

Let the Project Begin
Engine & Transmission Removal -/- G-Force Crossmember
Posted: May 13, 2011 www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Happy Friday the 13th to all of my friends

Since the rear differential had to be removed so we could remove the exhaust. I figured I would install a set of 3" lowering block so I could get an idea as to how low the car was going to be once I installed the new Ride-Tech suspension.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

This is exactly the height I am looking for with the car. Low enough to look cool and still plenty of clearance to be able to be driven on the streets near me.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Reference picture - Lets see how old my girls are when I finish this project. Anyone want to make bets as to how old they will be once I finish this project !!!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Not only did she win Young Author for the entire 4th grade she is not afraid to get under the car and drain the fluids.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Engine removed and even sold to Ron. Ron ( www.hoodpins.net ) is going to put it in his 70 Z28 project ( www.camarorsx.com ).

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

Ron this picture is for you. Yes, my floor actually gets dirty.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

All done for the day and cleaned up time to ride the Bike.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

A couple years ago I had the pleasure to meet Stacy David (( http://gearztv.com/ )). Talk about a down to earth nice guy. I had just watched his show and they introduced a new product from G-Froce Crossmember www.crossmembers.com . He said it was a super nice product and I should look them up on my next project. So I took his advise and I called the Guys at G-Force crossmembers. I told them about my project and they said they had a crossmember that would work perfectly.

One week later this crossmember showed up at my shop.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

This special modified crossmember is perfect and talk about hugging floor and offering perfect ground clearence.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I can't wait to show you guys pictures of the crossmember under the car.

2012 01-06 Update - Going to get Blasted

Posted: Jan 06, 2012 www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Morning All,

Wow am I far behind posting pictures and yes these pictures are from almost a year ago.

With the car over at US Collision it was time to start working on the sub-frame. Yep another trip to Pro-Tek Powder Coating
to get the sub-frame blasted. I just hate working with dirty or rusty parts. Call me a neat freak but I like a clean work enviroment.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/01/201512202046172b0c78d9me-1.jpg

The frame is pretty much rust free and the should be fairly easy for Jay to blast.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/01/201512202046227ef6f477me-1.jpg

Now that the frame is blasted I can haul it to High Speed Welding. www.highspeedwelding.com Stubby is going to clean
up the welds and add some new weld to stiffen up the frame. Not going crazy just a little clean up.

For the money you can beat the price and the customer support.

Best bang for the buck is the C5/C6 Kit. One of the main reason I wanted this kit is i can still
run a GTO spare tire as I plan to drive this car. For mock up I just ordered the base rotors. When
the car is complete and all bugs are worked out I will get the nice rotors.

I never saw you mention it, but are you running the Ridetech setup in the back too? I am following your build closely and this is very similar to what I have planned for my 74 Firebird. I have looked at all the different suspension offerings and I keep coming back to Ridetech, especially with the new coilovers. The system seems well thought out, and they get out there and test their products.

Yep - The front & rear suspension will be all Ride Tech & Moog. Once the "Prep-Posts" are complete I going to post up the build concept for the car. The goal with this car is to build a modern Vintage TA Car. Tire size will be 295's rear and 255's front so it has nice drivablilty.

So far I am very happy with this car.https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gifTop side of the Quarters have some surface rust. Shouldn't be a problem for the media Blaster.https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gifhttps://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gifhttps://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gifAll that is left for me to remove is the rear bumper and Deck lid. Then I can actually start mocking things up on the car. I can't wait !!https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gifAt some point in this cars life it took a little hit to the drivers side rear. The body work they did back then was not that good as you can see in the pictures below.https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gifhttps://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gifIt's hard to tell in this picture but the floor still has a wrinkle in it.https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gifNew Project - Billet Battery Tray ( www.hoodpins.net)Since this car is truly going to be a driver and I really couldn't care less about putting the battery in the trunk. I wanted a nice billet battery tray up front to put an Optima battery in. So I called up Ron at www.hoodpins.net and told him that we need to make a billet battery tray. Good Evening all,

Now that the car is home and my little helpers are ready and willing to help. A few area's needed a little more primer so my oldest
volunteered to spray a little more primer on the car. It's important to keep your kids involved in every thing that is how they learn.

Good Evening All,

Now that the shell is ready for construction it's time to post up the build outline. The main purpose of this car is to be a Mountain Bike Hauler since Mountain Biking is my first love with Car shows being a close second. The goal is to combine my the two and have the ability to drive to all of the nearby Good Guys Show and then on the way home hit the nearby trails. With that being said the car has to be dual purpose built. It needs to have a good set of street tire and then have an extra set of tires for the Good Guys Events.

Last year at Good Guys Columbus I fell in love with a very understated Mustang built by Pinkee's Hot Rods. If you pick up the last months issue of Popular Hot Rodding you can see the feature they did on the car. After reading that article I new I was heading in the right direction.

We are going to try to stick with the Vintage Race Car Theme without being overstated since I want to be able to street drive the car and not get pulled over every time I drive the car. And then there is that Mountain Bike issue where are we going to put the bike. Let's just say that this is going to freak some of you out and others are going to think it's awesome.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/02/2018121600370875f0f30ame-1.jpg

There are a couple other cars that has truly inspired me and this build. When the car heads to a track event I will print up some removable decals that will instantly make it look more like a Vintage TA race car. Kinda like this beast.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

I have looked at this car for at the last couple years and I just love the look. So this car will also lend some idea's to the build.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

another very clean build.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

As for modification - most of them will be simple. The car will be mostly bolt together with very reliable part and most importantly something that if I break down they won't leave me Stranded.

2nd Chance Camaro - Installing the Ride Tech Air Bar
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
2012 02-21 Update - Installing the Ride Tech Air Bar www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Morning,

Now the fun begins.

The goal with this project is to teach people what I've learned from the last build. The main purpose is to keep people from losing there project because of poor planning. Planning isn't just writing down what you want the end product to look like it's actually being honest with yourself and making sure you have the time, money and the resources to actually build your dream car.

The plan is to show the option/cost you can do just for the rear suspension.
1. Leaf Springs Similar to Hotchkis
a. Benefits of keeping your leaf springs is cost is minimal and the car isn't going to be out of service.
b. Most backyard mechanics can do this swap in there garage or even a driveway.
c. Easy exhaust routing ( keeps your costs down when running exhaust )
d. There is a good chance you are going to be able to find an aftermarket exhaust or even use your existing exhaust

2. Diagonal 4-Bar Similar to Ride Tech
a. Benefit of this set up is cost isn't much more then leaf springs and is very adjustable.
b. There is minimal welding that can be done by any experienced welder.
c. Custom exhaust is a necessity

3. Weld in 4-Link Similar to DSE
a. Cost is more then a Diagonal 4-Bar
b. Your going to need a shop or have a good deal of Fabrication skills
c. Very adjustable
d. Custom exhaust is a necessity

So for this project I choose to go with the Ride Tech Air-Bar Set up using the single Adjustable Coilovers. I can do most of the preliminary work in my garage and haul it over the High Speed Welding and have Jr. set the Pinion angle and weld the brackets on the Axle.

Here is the Ride-Tech Bracket mocked up on the car the drivers side was a perfect fit. The passenger side needs a little adjusting to make it work.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/02/201512202050508d0264b9me-1.jpg

After I located the bracket on the frame rails I held it in place with a good set of clamps. After that all I had to do was drill a few holes in the floor and the upper bracket was in place.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/02/20151220205054664f728dme-1.jpg

Here is a close up of how the bracket hit the floor on the passenger side. Since all of these cars are slightly different you can't expect them to fit perfectly. It's funny I was talking with Ron and his passenger side fit perfect and the drivers side was just a little off.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/02/20151220205052d078f020me-1.jpg

Once the car arrives at High Speed Welding they will flattened the bracket so it would line up with the floor. Very simple fix.

So be honest with yourself if the car your working is you only car then you should go the leaf spring route. If you don't have to worry about the car being down for a couple days then step up to the Ride Tech suspension.

More to come later this week.

2nd Chance Camaro - Mocking up the Subframe
2012 03-04 Update - Mocking up the Subframe
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Evening,

Since the goal with this car is to use as many bolt-on's as possible and limit the custom fabrication which can drive the build cost up and sometimes spirals projects out of control. If you have an unlimited budget and money is no object then you don't have to worry about it. However, most projects are built on a very strict budget these days, this one included. I learned a lot building Syborg and let me tell you there are plenty of places I could have and should have saved money. One of the reason I picked a Camaro is there are plenty of parts available and also a very wise man that will only go by the name "Bob" once said to me when you build something make sure there will be plenty of buyers when it's complete. Remember, you may not have any intentions of selling your project but no one knows what the future holds. So when you looking to build something stay true to your goals which should include a realistic budget of time, money and skill.

With the sub-frame back in the garage it was time to assemble all of these bolt-on parts. I also felt that it is important to involve my daughters and some of our friends kids.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/2015122020510896d2e43cme-1.jpg

Installing the custom G-Force crossmember was fairly easy with the subframe out of the car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/2015122020511191d6aaddme-1.jpg

You can see my little helper putting the bolts in for the engine stands. I think she was having more fun then me.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/201512202051171b6d265dme-1.jpg

and this picture proves it.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/201512202051224b36178eme-1.jpg

I think she did a great job

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/201512202051256aaf8c6bme-1.jpg

Our neighbors son happened to be over so I figured I would let him bolt in the G-Force Crossmember.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/201512202051282af529cdme-1.jpg

He did such a great job installing the crossmember I figured I would let him install the Edelbrock headers. In a previous post I think I mentioned that these are for a 2010 Camaro. With a little modification they will work perfect and we will be able to tuck them up nice and high so they are not visible when you look under the car. This part is another example of an off the shelf header that will require minor modification which will keep the overall build cost down.

2nd Chance Camaro - Mocking up the Kore3 Brakes

2012 03-20 Update - Mocking up the Kore3 Brakes
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Evening all,

Time to start putting on all of the cool parts I've acquired. First to go back on were the old spindles.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/2015122020513426dc1d21me-1.jpg

Then I installed the AFCO steering box from www.hoodpins.net .

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/2015122020513809f0e152me-1.jpg

Next to install was the Kore3 Front Brakes it is a very complete kit and simple to install.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/01/20151220205159316e7ec1me-1.jpg

Per the easy to follow instructions.
First cut off the ears to make room for the new brackets. I took a little off at a time remember once it's gone it's gone so don't go
crazy. Be safe take off a little at a time.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/20151220205203e8c57da4me-1.jpg

Here is what the final spindle modification looked like. The next step it to drill out two of the dust shield bolt holes and re-tap them for new
hardware.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/2015122020520809622dd2me-1.jpg

Now you can install the Bracket, Caliper & Hub

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/20151220205213f011452eme-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/201512202052173fa29840me-1.jpg

All I need now is the correct rotor however I left it at my warehouse so for now I am going to use the rear rotor. I just wanted to see
how the brakes will look installed. I am very happy with this kit and the total install time was less then 2 hours.

The edelbrock headers worked perfect. They cut the collector off and added a new 2 1/2" down pipe. The exhaust tucked perfectly within the stock subframe. Nothing is hanging below the frame. Since I am so far behind on post here is what it looked like.

Since Wegner is building the motor. I figured I would use there front drive set up.

2nd Chance Camaro - Rear Axle Prep

2012 03-22 Update - Rear Axle Prep
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Morning all,

It's time to get the rear suspension on the car so I can get it off Mario's Rotissorie. The Rear suspension is a pretty straight forward install.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/20151220205145d20378ddme-1.jpg

My oldest daughter figured I was hungry so she made me lunch. Now that is a good kid!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/2015122020515050ef6aedme-1.jpg

Since the upper link bar brackets needs to be welded to the axle I wanted to make sure the Powder Coating wouldn't get damaged on the
upper bars. Time to take stock in the 3m Blue Painters Tape.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/201512202052278fa2d16dme-1.jpg

Lower Bar installed

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/20151220205234b34fde13me-1.jpg

I needed to get the rear differential in the trailer so my daughter Kenzie and I installed the rear tires so she could roll the rear differential into the trailer.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/201512202052396e4f06deme-1.jpg

floor pan. Very simple tweak that had to be done. Even though these parts are meant to be bolt-on some-times
they require a little work to fit better.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/2015122020524949a9e194me-1.jpg

After some discussion Dennis at High Speed Welding felt it was important to retain the hardware supplied
by Ride-Tech and to weld the brackets to the stock subframe to help distribute the load on the stock frame rails.

Good Morning all,

The guys at High Speed finished off the install of the Mini-Tubs.
Mario did a such great job cutting out the original tubs it made short work for the guys.

You can see that they have already bent up one side.

2nd Chance Camaro - BBT Fab New Front Spoiler & Rocker Extensions
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
2012 03-28 Update - BBT Fab New Front Spoiler & Rocker Extensions
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Morning all,

I dropped the car off on Friday the 16th at BBT Fab in Champaign, IL www.bbtfab.com with Troy for a couple modifications. After seeing the work that he has been doing on the 69 Firebird I wanted him to make similar rocker extensions for my car.

Yesterday Troy posted a few pictures of the Camaro. It's starting to take shape and once the car is back on the ground I am sure it will look even "more better" <--- my daughters favorite two words.

Firewall Modification
The guys removed some of the unnecessary holes and put blind nuts in the firewall for the DSE Close Out Panel.

Image Missing - Add

Rocker Extensions
The goal was to hide the pinch weld with little to no cost. In the past most builders spend hours extending the rockers
and it doesn't always look right. BBT Fab solution is very simple and clean and it's something that you will be able to buy
very soon for the 69 Camaro, 69 Firebird and Early 2nd Gen Camaro. The benefit of these rocker extension is that it will
make the car look much lower then it actually is and that is a good thing since the roads in the Chicagoland Area are treacherous

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/DSC_0194-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/DSC_0199-1.jpg

Moving on to the front Spoiler
I gave Troy a very crude picture of what I was looking for and told him to have at it and here is what he came up with. With
the spoiler split in the front I will still be able to get a floor jack under the nose of the car and I won't have to worry about
every curb that I encounter.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/DSC_0191-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/DSC_0193-1.jpg

If there is enough interest I will look into getting molds made of the Front Spoiler so Troy can sell them.

Since we have a couple more weeks before Kenny picks up the car the guys at BBT Fab are going to start repairing
some of the original sheet metal. Less for Kenny to do

Hi Tim,

I saw the car in person on Saturday and the front end looks great. When it comes home in two week I will taking the spoiler to the Fiberglass shop to have molds made.

At this point it looks like we will be making at least 5 sets

Hope you dont mind Marty,

I also have installed the ride tech 4-link and DSE tubs and you dont need any other parts/metal then what comes with the kit. ( unless you mess up LOL) I did the tubs first but I dont see a reason that you cant do the 4-link first? the tubs do not interfere with 4-link.

Thanks again for the pics Marty get them coming!!

Serious you are going to have to call me. The DSE Instruction and video suck and leave out so many important information. (sending pm with my number )

We did a very simple modification to the lowere spring pocket that allowed us not to have to cut the existing frame rail like you would have to do with the Quadra-Link.

You are going to need one extra bracket from Ride-Tech to move the lower bars over. It actually clean up the look of the rear suspenion a bunch. I will try to make my post today about the rear suspension install so you can see what we did.

2nd Chance Camaro - Ride Tech Coil Over Rear Suspension Part I

2012 04-15 Update - Ride Tech Coil Over Rear Suspension Part I
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Morning all,

For the rear suspension I upgraded to the Ride-Tech Coil Over set up. However we've added a few new
parts that Ride-Tech offers. First is there offset lower link bar and offset spring mount which gives you an
extra 3/4" of tire room. There will be plenty of room to fit the BFG 295 (12.5" wide) and most 315's.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/2015122021010702652e18me-1.jpg

There new Coil overs - what else do I need to say.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/2015122021013816dd5715me-1.jpg

Very Simple Install.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/201512202101414821bf02me-1.jpg

Okay Plan B
Yes I am changing things just a little. I am going to remove the factory spring perch and install Ride Tech's
new weld on lower bracket. I think they are going to clean up the area. The plan is to move the arm over
another 1/2 which will allow me to fit the BFG 335. It will also allow me to fit the Michelin 345 which is an 1"
narrower then the BFG 335.

Before I bring the car to High Speed Welding I am going to cut off the spring perch's off the axle.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/20151220210225e80bc5adme-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/2015122021022930d869bcme-1.jpg

In order to get it back to High Speed Welding I used some of my extra parts. This cool little part came from
DSE. Originally I was going to keep the leaf springs but since they wouldn't sell me the front spring pocket
parts I needed that idea was soon scrapped. I made a quick call to Ride-Tech and purchased there
complete rear kit. So if anyone needs these brackets there just sitting on a shelf at my shop.

Priced to sell cheap !!!

If your planning on running the bfg 335 you are going to have to buy the offset bars from Ride-Tech and them do the spring pocket mod to get them over the last 1/2". Also you need to cut a little more metal away on the front of the tubs then the instructions/ template states. If you don't you will not be able to fit the 335 without hanging them outside of the fenders.

Also if you cut more them you need it's not a big deal since your pulling the new inner fender over to the new verticle strip you just welded in. Something that is also left out of there instructions.

2nd Chance Camaro - Rocky Mounts

2012 04-30 Update - Rocky Mounts www.rockymounts.com
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

This post is all about my first love (other then my family of course). I am a die-hard mountain biker it is very hard for
me to miss a ride in the summer due to a show schedule. The only way to solve this was either to buy a Lotus and
order a rack from Unique Racks http://uniquerack.com so I could have a cool car with a bike rack on it. But it didn't
solve the problem. I wouldn't be able to do any of the Good-Guys shows (www.good-guys.com ) since the Lotus would
be was newer then 1972.

So here is my dream bike and I am trying to figure out a way to mount the bike on the side of the car and wondering how it would
look. I know most people would put it on the back but that is way to boring for me.

Now that I determined the location all I have to do is find the best looking tray on the market. When I was in Colorado at
Cankworx ( www.crankworx.com ) I walked by the Rocky Mounts Display ( www.rockymounts.com ) and saw the perfect
tray. I wanted to buy one at the show but I figured Southwest wouldn't let me carry it on the plane home.

I ordered up the tray the day I got home and started mocking it up on the car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/201512202105130a058bd7me-1.jpg

You can see that the tray's has a very thin profile and looks very clean on the side of the car. I can't wait to order a set
for my daily driver.

I hauled the car back to High Speed Welding ( www.highspeedwelding.com ) and showed Dennis and Joe my idea.
Good thing for me both of them thought it was a cool idea.

We have two goals make it removable so I can run the car through a car wash and to try not to disturb the original lines
of the car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/04/201512202106538ddaffacme-1.jpg

When the tray is removed all that will be left is two stainless steel bungs on the quarter. Kenny will be making a cap to
cover them up when the Rocky Mount tray is removed.

That was sick! I wonder if it looks harder/trickier on film, i dunno if i have the cojones to do some of those jumps and single wood trac, i do have scars from trying that kinda stuff in the past. "You know your getting old when you go to bed feeling pretty good and wake up injured" (Rodney D)

But, are you hardtailing that Seattle stuff or full suspendy? Looks like a little of both...

Nope I think it's just hard and the Film makes it look easy.

I still like a short travel full Suspension so for me it would be a 26" Tire 3" Travel Bike.

Here is the skinny in my back yard it's part of a course I built so I could just get up in the morning and screw around in the back yard

Thank you and it has taken years to get to this point and it's still not done. I am working on the climbing ceiling and wall next.

I like it. considering the 2nd gen doesn't have rain gutters you were kind of stuck. I also don't like hitch mount racks and used to run a yakima roof rack on my '70 Nova all summer long (when I had my Fat Chance on the roof I tripled the value of the car!)

Which Fat Chance did you have ?
I worked in a shop in the early '90's, custom ordered a Yo Eddy in periwinkle blue, built up w/ Campagnolo Euclid.
then I rebuilt it Campagnolo Record OR when that came out, and sent the frame back to Fat City and had it repainted cheese whiz orange, w/ a new box crown fork.
yeah, I spent a lot of money on it...

LOL no :( I made some big life changing decisions in '93, sold my Nova and that frame. kept a custom Slim Chance I had at the time too (custom purple paint, box crown fork too, and Campagnolo Super Record) but had to sell that frame a year later also.
just have a Surly Pacer now, that's all I need.

Marty, so thinking about your build, are you going to incorporate any mountain bike parts into it? How about a "tuffy" steering wheel? Five spoke from late 70's early 80's bmx bike, maybe too large a diameter though. Any thoughts? Hows it coming?

Actually there will be a hint of MTB Stuff in the car and the trunk. But I still need to discuss that with Kenny.

PS - Kenny we need to make a home for Shoe's, Helmet, Gloves, Camalback, and MTB tool box in the trunk. Maybe even figure a way to mount a bike stand on the back of the car so I can fix what I break on the trail.

mikes70
05-25-2012, 07:55 PM
You may be able to make the "tune up stand" mountable to the bottom side of the trunk, one of the hitch mount portable types cut down and retrofitted to the under of the trunk deck lid and then a couple of hinge latches to secure the trunk lid when open....? Luv this crap...p.s. went over the handle bars on my Cervelo going to watch the second stage of the tour of california, no longer a road virgin..lol (ouch)

2nd Chance Camaro - Kore 3 Rear Brakes & Moser Axles's

2012 05-29 Update - Kore 3 Rear Brakes & Moser Axles's www.kore3.com
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Okay I am way behind at posting updates.

Installing the Kore3 brakes is so easy install even my 11 year old daughter can do it. First we remove the stock axles and original drum brakes.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/05/20151220205935ff12c646me-1.jpg

Here is the complete Kore3 rear brake kit.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/05/20151220205940ed575a1cme-1.jpg

We installed the supplied bracket and did a quick test fit of the caliper.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/05/201512202059426040f4a2me-1.jpg

In order for the GM Rotors to fit on the axles you need to machine down the axle flange. Instead of machining down the 40 year old axle I called Moser and had the build a set of HD Axles with the proper flange diameter. My daughter ran the tap down thru the bolt holes to ease the install of the ARP wheels studs.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/05/20151220205952b8637f12me-1.jpg

Like I said so simple a 11 year old could do it.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/05/2015122020595435770395me-1.jpg

Final Install Picture and yes my daughter installed the entire kit with only a little help.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/05/201512202059577a536b1ame-1.jpg

Since the rear cover was off it was the perfect time to install the Aluminum Differential cover from Summit Racing.

Since this car is being built to haul the family it's important to have restraints for all passengers. I had
the guys at High Speed Welding in Westmont, IL install a mounting point for the 4 Point restraints for
the kids. www.highspeedwelding.com

Well, had a colonoscopy and it didn't go well. They had to go brave heart on me and remove a 12" section of my colon and a ping pong ball size tumor. Yes it was cancer yet again but the good news is that it was isolated to my colon and had not spread to my lymph nodes.

So good new is they removed the bad stuff and they explored around for 2 hours looking for more of the bad stuff and didn't find any. Meet with the Doc and Oncologist on Monday to see if I need to do Chemo but it looks like I may not have to. Even if I do it's just a small set back and I'll beat it again.

2nd Chance Camaro - DSE Brake Booster Install

2012 07-02 Update - DSE Brake Booster Install
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Evening All,

It's very important to mock everything up before paint and final assembly. The perfect example is what happened when I installed
the Brake Booster. The angle is off even though this is the correct DSE part number for a 70 Camaro.

You can see that the hood won't close with the supplied bracket. So back on the phone with DSE to talk with Tech Support,
send some pictures and wait for a response & solution.

A few weeks later DSE has a solution and it's simple bracket swap. I like simple, especially when your trying to build a bolt-on
Camaro.

2nd Chance Camaro - Fitting the LS1

2012 07-04 Update - Fitting the LS1
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Morning All,

It's time to put the actually motor in the car so the guys at High Speed Welding can finish up the edelbrock exhaust.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/07/20151220210053348ad7efme-1.jpg

The plastic blocks are sure awesome it's to bad I am not strong enough to lift the real motor.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/07/201512202100566a543fb7me-1.jpg

I purchased the LS1 from Travis at Kenny Davis Hot Rods it came out of a 98 Camaro.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/07/20151220210059262b122fme-1.jpg

I used Edelbrock adaptors to mount the motor and you can see the F-Body oil pan clears the subframe perfectly.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/07/2015122021010271dea5b7me-1.jpg

Motor is in and there is plenty of hood clearance with the stock intake manifold.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/07/201512202101102ddc99eame-1.jpg

But of course I have no intention of using the stock manifold as this motor is going to have a Carb.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/07/20151220210113155a71aame-1.jpg

Did I mention it's made in America.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/07/2015122021011674c2898dme-1.jpg

Once again you can see I am using as many Edlebrock products as possible. Nothing say vintage race car and Americana
then Edelbrock !!!

Been following this build closely and I must say I love the car and how instructive you have been. I am planning on doing a lot of the same upgrades on my car and with no help or background building cars, I have learned a lot of little tips and advice just from reading this. So Awsome that your thread has been a lot about keeping guys like myself in mind. Always looking to learn and find ways to copy guys like yourself. Love the car and your setup and best wishes for your health. Keep it coming

Thank you very much. I learned a lot building the truck and wanted to share as much as I could on this project. I also wanted to keep the budget much lower on this project. Working with local fab shop High Speed Welding and Kenny Davis Hot Rods have really kept this project on budget.

Also thank you for the well wishes on my Health. 1st Chemo treatment is over and it was not that bad and Friday I get the chemo pump removed which will make doing thing a littl easier. Only 11 more treatments to go over the next 6 months.

2nd Chance Camaro - Tiger Cage Install Part 2

2012 08-09 Update - 2nd Chance Camaro - Tiger Cage Install Part 2
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Evening all,

Installing the Tiger cage is fairly easy. I was able to install the complete cage in about 4 hours. However, I did
need a helper to finish tightening some of the supplied hardware

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/2015122020591329b78d46me-1.jpg

The hoop mounts into the floor brackets which self align for easy drilling.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/20151220205916fdba9b2dme-1.jpg

The down bars attach through the package tray.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/20151220205919a6c2e0b6me-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/2015122020592249574886me-1.jpg

Quick look at the finish of the down bar.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/201512202059241ea6f19cme-1.jpg

The down bars attach to the trunk floor. I used the frame rail spot welds as a guide to line up the bolt holes.
Make sure you line this up perfectly so it hits the flat part of the frame rails. I used a right angle drill with a
1/8 drill to make sure I hit the frame rail perfectly.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/20151220205927304fb815me-1.jpg

You can see that the bolts hit there mark perfectly. I also had to get tweak the floor just a little bit.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/201512202059299f9897aeme-1.jpg

Finishing off the cage I once again enlisted the help of one of my daughters. I also found the perfect use for an
old cotton shower curtain. It makes a perfect blanket for my daughter to lay on.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/201512202059119052138bme-1.jpg

You can see Ride-Tech did a perfect job when designing the Tiger cage. The main hoop is in perfect alignment
with the "B" pillar.

2nd Chance Camaro - Tiger Cage Install Part 3

2012 08-12 Update - 2nd Chance Camaro - Tiger Cage Install Part 3
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Good Afternoon all,

Even my girls are excited when boxes come from Ride Tech.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/2015122021031539f1fda9me-1.jpg

The most important thing is "Do Not Open" the Envelope from Ride Tech. You may order more stuff !!!!!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/20151220210319806ec362me-1.jpg

Now this is how parts are suppose to be shipped.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/201512202103233249fa7ame-1.jpg

Mounting the side bars is very simple. Locate the brackets on the main hoop and tighten once all hardware is loosely fastened.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/201512202103312611fba8me-1.jpg

Still trying to decide if we are going to hide this bracket under the carpet. It's almost to nice to hide.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/2015122021033480944e82me-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/20151220210338477531bbme-1.jpg

On forward door bar one of the bolts must come up from the underside of the car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/20151220210341960b753ame-1.jpg

These are the only tools that you need to install a Tiger Cage after you drill the holes in the floor pan.

2nd Chance Camaro - BBT Firewall Modifications

2012 08-15 Update - 2nd Chance Camaro - BBT Firewall Modifications
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Evening All,

While the car was at BBT Fab the guys did a little work cleaning up the firewall.

Some of the holes didn't line up when I tried to install the Close Out panel . So I had Troy weld up the existing holes and
installed Nut-Zerts in the firewall. This was also a chance to install his new hardware.

Hi Matt,

From the factory they are pretty sloppy looking and globbs of seam sealer. Welding it up allows it to be smoothed and then painted for a clean look.

It's the DSE piece and it's pretty darn cool. I actually had this one and the complete cut & replace version. Since the car's theme is an old factory race car that has been updated this part fit the bill much better.

I actually prefer the look of the plate and the tasteful smoothing. I am not a huge fan of these perfectly smoothed firewalls, sometimes it comes off a little too street rod looking. I want to smooth what I can, but I will probably go with this plate when I switch over the Vintage Air. For now, I am going to give the stock suitcase a try and see if I can get it to work with an LSX.

2nd Chance Camaro - BFG 295's on the Rear

2012 09-22 Update - BFG 295's on the Rear
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Evening all,

Picking the right tires for your car is important, it can make or break the final look . As much as I like the big tire look out back it just doesn't fit with the plan for this car. The goal is to have something that looks very classy and timeless. So the ideal size for this project would be somewhere around 12" wide.

Remember timeless is the goal for this car.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/201512202101453135a680me-1.jpg

What was funny is I asked everyday people what they thought of the tire combo on this car while it was sitting in my garage and everyone
said the same thing.

Looks Perfect !! Not to big, not to small just like the perfect bowl of porridge - Just Right

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/2015122021014826ff04a8me-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/20151220210153b4dcd0fdme-1.jpg

2nd Chance Camaro - Billet Specialties Mag G Wheels

2012 09-22 Update - Billet Specialties Mag G Wheels
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Evening all,

Scott from Billet Specialties was kind enough to come over and confirm the backspacing. He also dropped off the test rims to make
sure everything fit as we hoped. Using the stick you can confirm tire clearance when the suspension run's through it's travel.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/201512202103536fe2749ame-1.jpg

If your spin the rim you can check for other clearance issue's.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/2015122021040001361ccfme-1.jpg

The 2 1/2" on the stick shows upward travel for the rear suspension. You need to make sure that when the tire goes up it doesn't
connect with the inner wheel tubs.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/201512202104051d2adb05me-1.jpg

2nd Chance Camaro - To 335 or not !!![

2012 09-24 Update - To 335 or not !!!
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Evening all,

There has been a lot of progress on the car and I am playing catch up on the posts.

So here are the two tires side by side. 335 on the left and 295 on the right.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/2015122021002133ef95c0me-1.jpg

2nd Chance Camaro - Making Room for the Edelbrock Headers

2012 09-25 Update - Making Room for the Edelbrock Headers
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Evening All,

To keep things simple I wanted off the shelf headers so I ordered up a set of Edlebrock shorty headers for a 2010 Camaro. Very nice
piece I may order a set for my 2010 Bumble Bee.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/201512202105225d218ee2me-1.jpg

We needed to add a little extra clearance so the guys at High Speed Welding notched the frame to clear one of the tubes on the passenger
side. The good news is the drivers side fit perfectly.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/20151220210525a47d2e5dme-1.jpg

A close up of the motor mount stands welded to the stock subframe. I also used the Edelbrock set back plates so I could use the stock style
motor mounts.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/201512202105303dd4dc1bme-1.jpg

Looking down you see that the collector hits the subframe so a little more work is needed on the passenger side to make the header
work.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/201512202105284eb58d58me-1.jpg

One of the reason for the shorty headers is ground clearance. Since the car will be sitting 6" off the ground the exhaust needs to tuck
up tight to the floor. There is only 4" of space between the floor and the bottom of the subframe thus there is no true way to hide
the exhaust unless you run a down-pipe style exhaust.

I have looked and looked for those headers. Edelbrock had a fire sale on them at one point in time and they were listed on the clearance page, but the quantity was at zero. They can still be found for cheap, but after seeing them go that cheap, it would hurt to pay regular price for a discontinued item. I bought some Dynatech swap headers and I am hopeful that they work well with the Scott Mock subframe.

2nd Chance Camaro - High Speed Welding Edelbrock Exhaust Mod Post 1

2012 10-22 Update - High Speed Welding Edelbrock Exhaust Mod Post 1

www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Afternoon All,

The guys at High Speed Welding are finishing up the exhaust and it should be done by the end of the week.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/10/20151220210536029f7523me-1.jpg

The goal is to tuck the exhaust up tight to the stock floor pan.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/10/20151220210550397ea122me-1.jpg

Close up of the new downpipes on the shorty headers

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/10/201512202105522c46ea29me-1.jpg

You can see that nothing is hanging below the Stock Sub-Frame as the car will be 5 1/2" off the ground.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/10/201512202105561ee5ac64me-1.jpg

In order to tuck the muffler tight to the floor they had to raise a section of the stock floor pan.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/10/20151220210558cbefc6e0me-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/10/201512202106018bad4128me-1.jpg

It was very important to keep the factory rear seat for my girls to ride in.

The G-Force cross member made tucking the exhaust up easy. This is a great piece !

Up and over the axle is going to be exciting as the car has been lowered 3" in the rear so it's going to be a tight squeeze.

I love how pictures make things look closer then they actually are.

what was the back spacing on those wheels?... did you have to do anything else to the car to fit those 295's on it?

The back spacing is 6.5" but the only way you can do that back spacing is if you use a set of DSE mini-tub. It will allow you to tuck the tire in some.

Your best bet is a 275 if you have stock inner wheel houses

"Your best bet is a 275 if you have stock inner wheel houses"

I agree. There are some tires that have a more rounded profile where you can squeeze a 285 back there if you also use the BFH tool to work on the inner wheel wells aa little :)

Very nice work and using bolt on stuff most of us "normal" guys can do. Shows that you can have an awesome car without a Kazillion dollars and a top of the line fabrication shop to build your project. Love the second gens and makes me miss my 70 RS SS that I was forced to sell years ago. really enjoyed reading through your thread today, thanks for all the great info.

PS
Please show how the access to the back seat will work with the cage in the car. I really want a cage in mine but also want access to the back seat too so I keep flip flopin on putting he cage in.

The goal was to use as much of the Edelbrock kit as possible. I think the guys did a great job at that. In the end I have a custom exhaust at a 1/3 the price of a complete one-off exhaust.

Hi Todd,

The goal with this car was to use as much bolt on stuff as possible. It keeps the cost down and you can do most of it in your garage.

I will get pics of the cage for you once the interior is in.

2nd Chance Camaro - Flaming River Steering Shaft

2012 11-15 Update - Flaming River Steering Shaft
www.2ndchancecamaro.com

Afternoon All

The stock steering shaft was ugly and I couldn't stand looking it. So a quick call to the guys are Flaming
Rivers and the new Stainless Steel steering shaft & universal joints were on the way. I know I could have
bought it direct from Summit Racing but they didn't have the lower universal in stock.

And yes I have a new rebuilt stock steering column sitting in a box.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/11/20151220210416c9644eb8me-1.jpg

I put the Universal joints on both ends. Slipped the shaft into the gear box side and marked the shaft
were it needed to be cut.

Little more then an inch needs to come off.
