After owning 4 different camaros over the years and upgrading with each one and finally selling the latest once last July. I have got the itch again already to start a new project and a bigger project instead of buying half done. One of my uncles has a big collection of camaros and corvettes over the last 30 years. I have been trying to get him to come off a 68RS/SS Camaro for 10 years now. He recently got sick and offered the Camaro to me finally.

My issues is this car is a factory 396/325hp car with the original drivetrain, it is missing many parts and needs completely restored but the metal is pristine. I assume the drivetrain is rebuildable but after sitting for nearly 30 years I am just not sure. The car has alot of options like power windows, door locks and factory cruise control but it is missing alot of parts to restore. It might have the build sheet but I haven't looked yet. The car was a factory AC car but all that is missing as well.

The body on this camaro is near perfect, best I have ever seen for 40 years old. Uncut and all original with not even a pin hole. Thats why I like it so much! But my biggest question is should I resell the car and get something more fitting to pro-tour? If the motor is cracked or junk and not rebuildable then the value goes down. Also I want to get rid of the factory AC hole and run a vintage air so smoothing the firewall is a must.

This body is the best I have ever seen, so is it a shame to deface a camaro that may be valueable restored to factory or since it is not a Copo or L78 camaro to just use the body for what I want?

I will be doing mini-tubs and a glink for sure.

Thanks, Erik

I wouldn't cut up that car.

+1. Sell it and get something that is non numbers matching. The engine can be saved I'm sure even crack damage can be repaired if needed (or most likely wanted). Not cheap but to keep the car numbers matching it mostly likely could be saved. I would say find another car.

How many 68 RS/SS's did they make with a 396? Sounds too nice to cut up and I am not a purist.

Here are two pics of my newest camaro. Not sure if I want to tackle it or sell and buy something a little more done and drivable. Matching numbers 396 as well.

Thanks Erik

Don't cut it up an original RS/SS, if you want to cut up anything get a plain jane to do it to. there are so few of the real RS/SS's left.

I wouldn't cut up that car. Restore it or sell it. Seems rare.

As much as I want to modify anything and everything, some cars just deserve to be restored. This sounds like one of those cars. Sell it to a restorer and buy a car more suited to what you are trying to accomplish.

You can buy a plain-jane car pretty cheap. Sell this one, buy a cheaper plain car, and you'll be ahead by the price-difference of the cars when it's time to order parts.

I agree. rare big block cars should be restored. Nobody will loose sleep over a 327 2bbl car getting a protour make over

I would consider trading you my second 67 Camaro..."rainy day" which is a standard 327 car, numbers matching, one owner, Cali car for your rs/ss 396. I was planning a un-molested pro-touring vibe for this car which is my wife's (I already have a pure PT ride). PM me and will send pictures and pro/cons. My car is a much better doner car for your project...and it sounds like your car is a much better suited car for my project.

Just thinking.....

you don't have to minitub it. You can still do alot of the good suspension to it and not hurt the car. And even with the motor you can build it with the retroroller setup and it will be a smooth running motor. Keep it and go that route, At least you know what you have to start with. Remember some of these guys are running pretty good with 8 and 9 in wheels in the back.
Just my 2 cents.....

If your going to do a real PT car then sell it for good money and look for a less rare project or even jump on a dynacorn body as it would be clean then build to your hearts content knowing its unrusted AND not a rare car.

Please do not cut up that car. Run the numbers on the options and paint. I bet its worth alot more than you think.
