I just put a sbc and th350 in my 68 firebird and its about to come out for an ls2 and transmission choice that is yet to be decided. Its funny that for the coin I've spent and am about to spend I could have bought a 02 trans am that does everything I want this car to do only better. Ah well. Anyway, it will see the odd drag race, I doubt it will ever be autocrossed as I'm in the middle of nowhere. Mostly cruising and hopefully beating up on my brother-in-laws vette.
The engine will make about 500 hp at the flywheel and I need a transmission that will handle it but I would rather find one through somebody here or locally. I don't want to go to a big name retailer and spend more for the trans than I did for the engine. Now here's the twist - the car was originally a 6 cylinder 4 speed that got changed over to a 307 auto by some brilliant mind far in the past. They left the brake pedal but took out the clutch pedal. My wife won't drive a stick but that's not a huge problem for me.
I've hear the 4l60 is weak and that a 4l75e would handle it. I've also heard that a t56 would handle it without a hitch. I don't know anything about sticks so I don't know. What are my options and best choices?
