i swapped an LS1/6 speed combo into a 68 chevelle.im using the KWIK p/s and alt. bracket.i modded the factory 68 chevelle P/S resevoir to accept a return line.problem im having is after 10-15 minutes of running the p/s pump gets noisy and hot.i thought it was the pump.so i swapped it for a brand new one from march performance.but still doing the same thing.the fluid isnt foaming and im using correct p/s fluid, not tranny fluid.anybody have any ideas?does it need a cooler to not get hot?is heat the issue?is air getting in somewhere?has a brand new P/S box from CPP.steering worked fine when 396 big block was in with old style p/s pump.any help would be great
I have added a cooler and same issue after 15 minutes. We have checked all of the lines and there are no obstructions. We thought it could be the fact that it was a type 2 pump and a saginaw 500 series box, that the pressure was too high. We put a pressure check on the pump and it is right at 850 which is the same as a big block PS pump.
We even took off a PS reservoir from another pump and mounted that temporarily in place of the reservoir that we made, figuring the baffles where different. Still No luck. I have called Detroit Speed, Unisteer, CPP, etc...
Can anyone help? It seems as if air is getting into the system somewhere, but we really cannot figure out where it would be, we have gone over and over everything there.
PLEASE HELP!!!

The pump should not be making much pressure without turning the steering wheel. Is it making pressure all the time? If so, then you have something plumbed wrong or plugged up. The pressure inlet line should be connected to the engine side port of the steering box. Return is the outboard line.

I went over the schematic today. The thing that is weird is that it is plummed right and today we took the original PS pump that was on the engine and put it back on with a corvette style remote reservoir and it was still whining, but not nearly as loud as the brand new pump that we had on. It just doesnt make sense at all to me.
We had a can type remote reservoir off of a big block with the same original pump and it was whining like crazy.

Have you properly "burped" the system? Perhaps there is trapped air somewhere? I would jack up the front end and with the wheels off the ground turn the wheel lock to lock several times, while keeping an eye on the fluid level. I have a C5 accessories with a Cardone rebuilt pump and AGR quick ratio box. It's very quiet.

Already Tried that too. Fludi went down, added and topped off. The fluid has tiny little bubbles when we bleed it and occasionally a bigger bubble. Other than that, it has been bled over and over again. Could it be picking up air somewhere? The reservoir is about 22" of house from the pump. It is mounted on the driver side fender well, could the hose length be a problem?

It's possible. With the stock C5/C6 accessories the tube from the reservoir to the pump is 2 inches long. What accessories are you using?

Were Using the Quik Alt and PS bracket with a unisteer PS Pump. We modified the PS reservoir from the Big Block (changed fittings, etc) to work with this pump so it looked stock.
There is no room in this setup to run the pump with the attached reservoir on it. The Alternator is on top, and the PS pump is on the bottom above the Steering Box.

I have a KRE pump with remote reservoir and I had to use special Aeroquip hose that will not collapse under vacuum. Not sure if this is an issue here but it might be worth checking. Here is the info from KRC:

Thanks. We just went over everything again, and have exactly what that article says.

Problem solved. We figured out that the aftermarket external reservoirs are not baffled correctly. We used one from a 2000 vette and worked like a charm. Hose length has nothing to do with it either for anyone who ever has this problem in the future. Thanks everyone.
