Lincoln Welder Question

I am not an experienced welder. I have a Lincoln 140 Mig and cant weld ****. But my buddies shop has a Miller 130 or 135 and the same Miller is at my job and I can weld like a pro. Is it the welder or something Im doing wrong.

I own a miller 180. I was looking at the lincolns, until I tried a friends 140 and I didn't like it at all. We've always used miller's at work and they work great for me. The lincoln for some reason just didn't take to the settings like it should have. I had a real hard time getting the heat and wire speed set correctly. If the wire speed was too fast, a slight turn down had it going to slow. It was very finicky machine. At the time, I just figured my friends machine was just abused, but I still bought the miller just in case. Also, the miller has infinite heat and speed adjustments where most lincolns at the time only 4 heat settings and you had to adjust your wire feed to fit the heat setting. Not the ideal situation, especially for thinner gauge steel. My Miller 180 welds amazingly well.

Having said that, Lincoln is suppose to be right up there in quality.

Are you using gas or flux core?
if your using gas, what type of gas to you have? and whats the pressure set at?
what steel are trying to weld? and what wire are you using?
How thick of steel are trying to weld?

Winner winner chicken dinner. That is what a person gets for paying more and buying a better quality machine. I have had a couple cheaper machines over the years and every Miller I have ever used welded just awesome. A good machine can make a lesser skilled welder better welder and a good welder can make a cheaper machine weld better but when you have a lower skilled welder and a cheaper machine welding can get real tough.

lincoln140 is a POS,I have one as a backup machine,it has at most 10 hours on it and everytime I use it,I get furious,so few weeks ago I got fed up with it because the drive system keeps slipping,called a local independent welding repair shop,the guy told me to buy Hobart,because simply they rarely come in for repairs compared to Lincoln.Hobart is made o by Miller and can be had for about $200 less,needless to say,I'm loving my new Hobart,since my Miler130 finally gave up after 15 years of abuse,I decided inatead of spending cou ple hundred bucks repairing it,I'll just buy a new machine,it doesn't match my Miller Synchrowave,but at least it's made by same company and I like how it performs
