My current project is a 94 trans am. I'm making the stoke 350 to a 383 stroker. My goal is to try to get in the 12's and be able to snap your neck at a red light. but i need help figuring out the setup. I have a few parts in mind as well as recommendations but I would like more opinions and recommendations.

Based on the "snap your neck at a red light" comment I am going to assume that this vehicle is going to be driven on the street. In that case, to get those power levels with those cubes AND maintain drivability/low end torque...Forced Induction.

A couple turbos, a high stall/transbrake (assuming auto), short rear gear, forged pistons and some nice con rods.

I was thinking about a 383 stroker with a pro charger. would that be a good combo? and as far as the combo being the 383 has high compression most the time. What pro charger would be a good choice since they usually work best with lower compression.

Compression all depends on what parts you use to build the engine, unless it is already built. I would look into running turbos, they are basically free horsepower, and you won't have to change any of your front accys to run them.
A couple companies make some really simple TT headers, or you can make a system using a set of shorties.
Do a bunch of research, and 600hp on a 383 is pretty easy.
Are you building an LT1 or is this a traditional SBC?

Personally I like the idea of a ProCharger on the street as opposed to a turbocharger. There is less equipment required, it is belt driven which equates to instant response even if jumping out of a light at idle, and I assume less cost as well. I myself have always wanted to run a ProCharger with my 383...only thing that's stopped me is budget.
If you are going forced induction you should set the engine up for it. Try not to use something built for N/A, for you will not get the same results. Take the compression down to ~8:1. Get a blower cam, fully forged bottom end w/ ARP studs, some quality heads bolted down with ARP bolts/studs, and make sure your cooling system is up to the task. Don't skimp on this stuff..."garbage in, garbage out".
instant torque and pro-charger/vortec/powerdyne/any centrifugal blower etc do not belong in the same sentence. There's nothing instant about any of those blowers when driving on the street. They all have lag as bad or worst than a turbo system unless you're starting in the sweet spot ~2500-3000 rpm. Drag racing is another story.

Hmm...I never thought of it that way. Guess the only way to get that instant torque is twin screw/roots. You learn something new every day, right? I went back to look at a few Procharger torque curves and you're absolutely right. Thanks for correcting me Trey.

no worries. I've built a number of pro-charger and magnacharger cars. Yes, the pro-charge cars make more power but IMHO the magnacharger cars are way more fun to drive simply because they do produce more torque right away. The term is positive displacement. Your roots/screw blowers make the engine feel bigger. Where as the centrifugal blowers are simply boosting the engine. It all comes down to intended use and where you need to make your power. I prefer to enjoy my cars and how they drive versus making more power than my neighbor. To me, torque rules. I want it everywhere but especially low in the RPMs.

A properly sized TT setup can make boost right off of idle, and "should" make more power than a roots or centrifugal. It could also be the least expensive; a couple of diesel truck turbos, some headers, piping and intercooler. Maybe looking around $1200-1500.

Jon is correct as well. My comment about the lag of a turbo was a generality or stereotype commonly associated with turbos. It certainly doesn't have to be that way. I'm actually looking to build a "positive displacement turbo system" Basically, I'd like for a turbo system to respond like the magnacharger cars do. I'm still studying so I'm not even sure I'll achieve my desired results. I believe I'll be able to though
