Sice I like to do things differently, my car is getting some little 16s and I have quickly discovered that hardly anyone makes a good performance tire for that size rim that exceeds a 245 series width. My eyes hurt and my fingers are numb from searching the internet. I looked at Toyo,Falken,Yokohama,Dunlop, Hancook,BFGoodrich & Kumho. I'm looking for a 275-295 width, 40/50 series on a 16. Hopefully Z rated with an agressive tread design but it seems almost impossible. Does anyone have a co. I haven't checked yet or is there such a thing as custom made tires? Any help would be apreciated.
This is the only one I found so far that seems somewhat decent and is still a little on the skinny side for me.

16s are the ******* size wheel. Nobody has ever embraced that size wheel. There are no normal size drag slicks for that size anymore either (Mickey Thompson used to sell 28x16s, but discontinued them). 255 wide is about all you might find, as most 16s are only 8" wide or narrower.

Move up to 17s, or go down to 15s. many more options available then.

I know, I know...I was hoping you wouldn't say that. The rims I have are just so nice and look so good on the damn car when I mocked them up in my wheel well. The wheel that I linked to above comes in a 265/45/16 size. Doing the math means almost a 10.5" contact patch on a relatively sticky street tire. You guys think that'll be enough for the car on the street? The Chevelle is going to have roughly 400HP to the tires....
I'm determined to keep these rims if I can.....do I have any other options?

Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's. 255/50/16's. I run them and their fricken sticky. 400hp should be no problem. However their a fast wearing tire (like any other performance street tire) They are not the best in rain but if you slow down their good.

Can you do me a huge favor and take a rear shot of your tire in the wheelwell? Almost like your sig but from a dead on POV with the tire? I really need to see how this looks. Thanks...
BTW- do you have a website for your car or some pic galleries?

The reveiws on the 712's over at c-c.com are good overall dry traction, suckass in the H2O. Just be careful in the rain, rumor has it even driving Miss Daisey with some water on the road can be a challenge.

Here you go. I think this is what you are asking for. Ignore the mess.

Also, I've posted 2 pictures(total on the board) and my limits.

Exactly what I wanted...thanks. Is that the kitty litter oil-delete mod? ;) Thanks for the info on the 712. So has anyone tried the v700 on their cars yet?? Alot of mixed reviews so far on the tire.....

V700 is supposed to be the ***** for an inexpensive autox tire. I beleive USAZR1 (Clint) is running those in the rear, maybe not.

16's are becoming the poor redheaded stepchild.

One problem with running a 50 series street tire is that the sidewall is too soft for road coarses, especially on front-heavy cars.

I just traded up from 16's to 17's. Here's something to think about. The overall width of a 275/40/17 on a 9.5" rim is only 1/4" more than a 255/50/16 on a 8" rim. The 275 however has a LOT more tread width. Plus, the 275/40/17 is just about the most popular tire size on planet Earth, so finding any kind of tire is easy.

Take a hard look at the Nitto NT555 IIR. Nice tire, great price. Good to learn with.

Here's a teaser...

I'm running V700's all around,,275/40/17's on the front and 335/35/17's on the rear. Very sticky.

haha....all that fuss and I end up running 17's and 18's. Going to try the Ecsta MX tires from Kumho and share my review as soon as they're cooking... :)

Hey everybody,
I ran those NITTO drag radials on a '96 SS Camaro. And those are sn awesome set of tires. They hook like crazy and at the same time they handle very good. After I bought my set, a friend of mine got a set and put them on his '98 Camaro. He even ran NOS on his car and said that he couldn't beleive how good it hooked even with the juice.
I would recommend them to anybody. :3gears:
