View Full Version : OEM cooling fan to use instead of a SPAL dual 12" setup?

I have used the Lincoln Mark VIII with great success, but it is too deep for my current project. I have used the Ford Windstar dual fan with moderate success (it cooled well, but was a pain to trim/mount).
For my current project I am using a radiator core that is 26" wide x 18.25" tall.
SPAL has a unit that is 25.8" x 17.3", which is pretty damn spot on. image below

Cost is about $350 though.
So I am curious if there is a popular OEM fan that gets used by people on this forum?
I do like the mounting tabs on the SPAL unit, but I have to put forth some effort to find a 26" wide by 18" tall OEM dual electric cooling fan assembly.
Have you looked in to a Ford Taurus fan? They are a 16" fan and pull a lot of air.

I have seen a few for sale adds for them, but no application use. I should have put down that I will have a twin turbo 540" engine and be street driven, so I need to get the heat exchanged like nobodies business. Perhaps I should just get the SPAL and then go from there.

Here's one from a 1997 ford contour:

Attached are it's dimensions. unsure on CFM though, but it is 3.3 inches deep versus the 4" deep dual 12" spal setup.
but only being used on a stock V6 suggests a weaker cfm. I am going with the SPAL setup. If it's too deep, I will have to go with a custom sheet metal shroud and then put in a thinner SPAL unit. Like a one big, one small kind of thing.

Just found a post about the above Contour fan:
http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=314940
It clames:
The contour fan pulls 3400 cfm. The Taurus fan pulls around 3800 cfm for reference.
The radiator is around 3" thick and I mounted it to the front support.

I've been using the 98-02 WS6/camaro twin fan setup on my turbo TA. Kept it quite cool. Its for sale in the parts section...I'll link it cause I have the dimensions so you can see it. Only upgrading cause I had a brand new aluminum radiator sitting there and I am adding A/C to the car as well, so I got a Lincoln MkVIII fan. Otherwise it kept the car cool, and as you can see from my signature the TA puts down some serious power. Of course you have to look at the size radiator it was attached to as well. Probably too deep for what you need though.

I'll go out on a limb and suggest the Spal setup is not going to be up to the task of pulling enough heat out for you. What exactly interferes with you not being able to use a Mark VIII? A pic would be great! I've trimmed up to 3/4" off the face of the fan shrouds to gain clearance. With what you have or will have invested in the engine, I would modify the radiator support to use a Mark VIII fan because you wont find a more powerful fan. When it really comes down to it, i would do anything I could to use a Mark VIII fan-they are that good!

I've been using the Taurus fan as well. It has worked great on my Pontiac 455. $25.00 at the Pick Your Part.
Picked up a Taurus fan from a pull it yard + DC control unit + homemade shroud and it works great.44550445494454844551
