View Full Version : Someone parked illegally in a handicap spot, I handled it protouring style

Hard to believe but I'm handicapped at the young age of 31 from Chronic pain from chronic pancreatitis. I have a intrathecal pain implant and everything. Typically I park in normal parking if there's a spot but this particular place always has screwy parking. I draw some interesting looks pulling up in a loud camaro, but you can never judge a book by its cover I guess...

I went to get some coffee and there were no spots available. I noticed this guy parked illegally in the one handicap spot without a placard so I did what comes naturally.

I took my time and took the dog to the dog park and enjoyed my coffee. The manager laughed and told me he'd make sure I didn't get towed. :rotfl:

Up next: Protouring Xmas tree!

Your my hero!

Mine too. I have a friend who is in a wheel chair and has a van with a lift. Seems everywhere we go all the hanicapped spots are taken especially the van accessible ones. For some reason seems like everyone has a placard and 99% don't seem to have anything visibly wrong with them. Best one is a guy jumping out a massively raised up 4x4, that takes off jogging.

Been thinking about having some bumpers stickers made up that read "Stupid, fat and/or ugly isn't a handicap, gtfo of the handicapped spots."

it doesn't seem so hard to be able to get a placard, but OTOH, not everyone's handicap is easily noticed.
some places seem to have TOO many handi-spots, like home depot and lowes! like 8 or 10 spots, and usually only 1 or 2 taken.

You Rock, I totaly support what you did. I recently lost an uncle to cancer that needed to park in handicap spot.He became so week he had to walk with a walker. When it's someone close to you it makes you realize even more the purpose & importance of the handicap parking.

If that was me I don't even think I would be mad because your car is so cool. I'll admit at 2am running to wallyworld or the grochery store I would park in handycap spots but 9 times out of 10 i was one of about 15 cars in the lot and i was in and out in less than 10 min.

Sometimes it's not easy to tell who needs the space and who doesn't. I once saw a guy come out of the store and get into his truck parked in a handicap spot while waiting in the car. I hopped out of my car and asked why he thought it was OK to park in a handicap spot? He looked a little uncomfortable and then said "I have a tag, but I didn't put it on the Mirror". It turns out that he had a health issue that wasn't apparent. I felt like a giant A-hole, but the coolest thing was that he actually said "thanks for looking out for us" and gave me a big smile. I still call people on it once in a while, but I am a little more careful about it.

I had knee surgery some years back, and nothing else ticks me off more than inconsiderates that think the handicap parking is for their convenience.
I get militant on people that pull that crap. If they are pulling into a slot near me, they better have a permit, or the plates.

You're the man!
I've got severe arthritis, so I have a hang tag.
Some days I hurt pretty bad, other days not. (Michigan winter is not kind to people with arthritis).
I don't always use handicapped parking, but I do pretty often.
It pisses me off to see someone parked in a handicapped spot without the hang tag, or handicapped plates.
Maybe they do have a health problem, but they need to thru proper procedure to get the tag or the plates.

Kudos to you! I'm in the same boat. One knee destroyed, the other is not much better. But it's mostly a stairs issue, so I'm holding off getting a card. Save the spaces for those that really need it.

I've got 2 handicap places in front of my shop and watched a man pull into a non-handicap spot . He got out and was on a cane and moved painfully slow . I heard the lady with him mention the handicap spot that was open and he told her that someone might need that more than him . I thought that it was sad that this man thought that someone might need that spot more than him and yet the FAT lazy people get a handicap tag/plate so they can park at the front door of Walmart .. I'm not saying that all handicap tags/plates are abused but I've seen more than a few that were just fat lazy people . I loved what the original poster done .

Good for you. I watched an elderly gentleman do the exact same thing at the grocery store near our home about a month ago. Some jackwagon pulled into the only remaining handicapped spot and literally ran into the store to go pick something up. The older fella pulled his 3/4 ton pickup (with hang-tag) up behind the guys lexus and parked. He was blocking me in as well and asked if I needed to get out. I told him that the clown in the lexus needed to be taught a lesson more than I needed to leave and told him I'd have his back. We then alerted the store manager who called the police and went into the Pete's coffee next door and waited for the fireworks.

There are alot of people who use anothers placard so they can park up front. In Cali if a cop see a person come bounding out of a handicap space into a store (the guy in the 4x4 jogging comes to mind) they will stop them and make sure the placard is issued to that person. There was a big thing in the paper a few years ago, where the local police were sitting on the handicap spaces at the mall and nailing all the low lifes using Grandmas handicap placard and cars (with handicap plates). You should have read the lame excuses of the offenders in that article.

Kudos to your action putting a self-center a$$ is his/her place. I would have called the PD to get a ticket issed on top of the block.

I know people like that! grandpa does the driving, parks in the blue spot while the whole family runs out of the truck into the store!
what else I don't get is the people who will wait for a spot close to the store; seriously, the time you spent waiting you could of parked at the back and been in the store already. I always know where my car is, the one by itself furthest away.

My best friend from the age of 5 who just passed away last Christmas at the age of 49 from brain cancer was electrocuted at the age of 21 in an accident. He took 7500 volts in the side of his head. It blew off his left foot and they amputated below the knee. It further blew off his big and small toes on his right foot and blinded him. My friend was very athletic you would never know he had been injured or had a fake leg. He worked as a drywall mechanic in construction most of his life. Every now and then his stump would get raw and he would use handicap parking he had a placard. You should have seen the look on the guys face one day when we pulled up to the mall. We parked in handicap right up front by the door and got out to go in. An older gentlemen who was trying to do the right thing screamed out at my friend hey you that’s handicap space. Things got real silent when my friend stopped reached down raised his jeans up unstrapped his leg and pulled it off.

Thats hectic. RIP. You can never judge a book by its cover. I've had similar experiences, once with a valet guy who got pissed I drove right past him and parked in the handicap spot and put my placard up. He proceeded to tell me I'm not handicapped if I'm driving stick in a camaro. I proceeded to lift my shirt where he could see a 4' incision with a hockey puck sized implant right below my ribcage and also a 4' incision along my spine. He quieted up real quick and got an earful. By the end of the conversation I had calmed down with the manager there and realized it wasn't the guys fault. He's right. There ARE a lot of BS people out there taking advantage of the placards and dirty doctors.

I see them all the time. I'm always shocked how many placards the DMV freely hands out with simply ONE doctors note. Theres should be tighter regulations on the medical history required for a placard. In my case I have a 3" thick file of medical records, 3 hospital visits, 2 surgeries that I carry with me. I also have a card in my wallet that identifies me as an implantee and lists the meds and purpose it serves. The goal of it is to present it to the TSA or security somewhere. I've yet to use it because I've yet to fly anywhere since getting sick.

That's why I love driving classics. On good days I get to have a BLAST driving to the grocery store and it brings a smile to my face and to others. Its a friendly experience and makes good days that much better :)

The best part about track days is, no pain on the track. ZERO. Once I pull into the pits after my session I'm back in pain. I avoid using meds on track days for obvious reasons so they are typically incredibly painful days except when I'm on the track.

I recently did an autocross event and was so frustrated that I spent 45 minutes off track, only to spend a few minutes on track, on a small course where your adrenaline can't get up. Its just not my thing and not worth it.

I'm hoping to do the Cal Speedway roval soon. Turn 1 and 2 are pain free at 140mph. Big Willow as well! :6gears:

Home Depot and places like Best Buy/Frys/Costco always have 10 spots and they are always filled. I don't bother unless I'm in severe pain. And when I'm in severe pain I usually don't leave the house. There are entirely too many placards written for BS excuses by 'compassionate' dirty doctors.

I'm pretty sure the manager told him I did it on purpose and that he would have to wait until I got back. I was at the dog park for over an hour taking my sweet time. I seriously doubt he was getting coffee for an hour. Either way tow trucks won't tow it. Most tow truck drivers are deathly afraid of touching a classic. Rightfully so.

I'm off to get my xmas tree strapped to the top :attn:

FYI that guy was not near as floored as the guys at the basketball court. My friend schooled this guy in a freindly full court game one afternoon at the local rec center. After holding the court most of the day we all sat down and were chatting about what a good day of ball we all had. The guy who had guarded my friend and got schooled said I bet you were pretty good before you messed up that knee. My friend replied theres nothing wrong with my knee. You should have seen all their faces when he pulled his leg off that day.

that's awesome! I can't stand it when folks park in handicap spots, especially when they are waiting for someone. The worst is that it's so easy to get the placard, that now all sorts of fat folks are using them. I saw a fat lady with one park in the last spot, when another person that was in a wheelchair had to park down a dozen spots. If the fat lady would have walked from the farther spaces instead of using the handicap spot, maybe she wouldn't be in the spot she is now :)

We have people in work that abuse the placards all the time. i work with a disgusting lasy guy in his late 50's that thinks the world owes him everything.

If he worked a full week, he would make about $90k a year but since his wife is "sucking off the system" he has to be careful how much he makes. We get paid OT on anything after 8 hours a day, not 40 hours a week so what he does is only works day that he knows a 12 hour day is available. We worked this saturday for 8 hrs at time and a half, and this sunday for double time. He now didn't show up today, and probably won't show up until Wednesday because he will have a chance at a 12 hour day again (got to love big unions huh?)

He also has a handicapped plate because his wife is "disabled" but he still parks in the handicapped spots at work (no, she doesn't work here). I told him that I would be totally embarassed to do that, hoping he would feel shame, but he felt none at all. He tells us he needs it too because he is a diabetic, as he litterally runs across the street to the store to buy all kinds of junkfood. I hate people like that. Too many people get those tags just because they are just fat and/or lazy, and the people that I know that really need them, use them as little as they can because they don't want to feel like a burden on society

Sorry for the rant, but just thinking about stuff like this gets my blood boiling.

He's even come into the plant with a limp and a cane before, and then once management leaves he hangs it up. Onetime I thought security saw my badge as I was driving in, but I guess I drove though the gate too quick, and that ended up getting me two weeks worth of onsite parking taken away.

He still wants to be as independant as possible and do his own thing, then whenever he goes to a store the handicap spaces are filled with lowlifes who could care less about someone who really needs it. I keep saying it should be legal for him to take a few shots at the car with is cane. (or better yet, the driver ! )

X1000... Placard or no placard these are abused.... I would bet that over 50% don't need them and only use them out of convenience..

Big props to those who have some old or hurting bones but would rather deal with it before considering themselves in need of a handicapped distinction.. Doesn't anyone have any pride any longer...

Great job.

That always irritates me when I see people park in handicap spots. I have made comments to several before [with no placard or plate] and they often get defensive about how "it is only a 5 minute trip"....then I tell them to move for an additional 10 second walk.

I can't stand it.

Look at me, I go to USC medical center every week, 4 hospital visits 100+ doctors visits over 3 years. I have a pain implant, yet love to go to track days and push 165 every chance I get. Guess its the natural endorphins from adrenaline that help with pain.

You NEVER know. I'm always happy to share a 1 hour story with anyone who asks though haha.

I do agree its far too easy to get a Placard in this state. Just a doctors note. EVERYONE knows a doctor. I know a doctor who does this and is an aquaintance of a friend. I reamed him pretty hard for it. I believe he has stopped. He even wrote himself one.

They should require medical history and files that are linked to the placard #.

Not every handicap person has visibly disabled. Your comment of stupid, fat and ugly is pretty insensitive. My active, independent wife of 30 years was diagnosed with brain cancer at age 50. The chemo, neuro radiation, and cancer took a toll on her independence, physical fitness and appearance for the last four and a half years of her life. I hope she didn't fall into your "gtfo" group.

You don't always now what or why people are disabled. Like you, I used to prejudge the use of handicap placards based on appearance, but looks can be deceiving.

pretty funny... but is it worth the risk? I'd be afraid of getting my door beaten in. Someone who has no regard for the law and parks in a clearly marked no parking area is likely the type with no regard for other's property.

I cant stand people who park in handicapped spaces without plates or tags.

This isnt really related, but I once shared an apartment with my brother in law where we paid for covered parking in the rear. My work schedule put me out of town for days at a time, and I started finding a car in my spot, that I pay extra for, when I came home at night. All the management would do is put notes on the car threatening to tow it, but it never got towed. I posted notes on the car to call me, knocked on doors to find out whos car it was, to no avail. Finally I came home one night and found it again and I'd had enough. I took the chain I had in the back of my truck, wrapped one end around of the rear control arms on the car and attached it to my truck. Then I drug it out of my spot, tires squealing, over to the fire lane. I saw it get towed, and I never saw it again after that. I never heard anything from anyone either.

Aaron,

That is classic!! I absolutely love it. I have no pity for those who have no regard for rules nor do I have any pity on those who don't respect the property of others. It doesn't matter if it is a handicap parking or a paid parking, it is a reflection of the persons character and more often than not these people operate below the line in my opinion. What goes around comes around.

I have a problem with people that "stand" wait in the handicap spots. I confronted one of them a few years back. Her answer was "If I see a handicap person coming I will move, until then I am going to wait for my kid to come out of soccer" WTF?!?! So the handicap person has to get out of the car .. walk up to your lazy ass .. .tap on the window and ask you to move!?!?!? Well I did not say that .. all I said was that it was very inconsiderate.

Call the cops with license number, park behind her, read a book if you have the time. Otherwise tell the manager to call the towyard they usually will/

Apparently its a common thing there. Now I keep an eye out for cars without placards.

I support this. I would have waited for her to come out, confront him/her on video tape and post it on youtube. Embarrassing these people who do such things might be the only way to change their attitude.

you did the right thing. I would have loved to see the look on her face when she came back out to her hybrid Lexus. I wouldn't have worried about her hitting you with her driving that she wouldn't dare scratch her probably rented (leased) Lexus. Hell I would have left her less than 4" got my coffee and sat close to watch her expression then let her sit longer. then come back to the car and if she gave me ANY grief, well time to walk the dog again. Great job hope that beeoch learned a lesson. Nice Camaro btw.

has this thread been officially upgraded from epic to legendary now? Well CSU pomona is pretty good about watching handicap spots, quite a few people come in with $413 tickets most have legit placards and are cool while we wave the ticket. But then there are the fellow students who cry me this river on how they forgot to put up their placard and hand me a placard for someone who was born in 1920 trying to waive the ticket. Needless to say it gets confiscated.

This has to be my favorite comment from the link...

"The owner of the black Lexus HS 250h in this picture made two mistakes: illegally parking in a handicap spot and illegally parking in the handicap spot usually used by the owner of this classic Z/28 Camaro."

Three, actually. He's the owner of a Lexus HS 250h.

That's friggin' awesome!

After reading this thread, it has prompted me to be more cognizant of these tools who park in handicapped spots. I have a Randall's pretty close to my house (an uppity grocery store that is way too expensive) and soccer moms are doing this all the time! I got lucky and got a spot up front one time and some soccer mom with no tags pulled up right next to me. I waited for a few extra seconds for her to get out to make sure she knew that was a handicapped parking spot, but she took her time and I was in a hurry.

Funny thing is, the lot isn't even that big! There's regular parking spaces just a few feet away. Humanity is doomed.

dont you think its a little funny that they have handicapped spots at the mall and wal mart? to shop at those places, you need to do a lot of walking so... unless you walk from the parking lot directly to the electric wheelchair you are defeating the purpose of the handicapped spot no? what about handicapped spots at the gym?

im all for special treatment for the handicapped, i just think that some of those parking spots are ironic.

Many handicapped people have their own wheelchairs, and in some cases stores (like walmart) supply those. In any case, if they still do not use a wheelchair or scooter, the less walking the better.

What about handicap spots at a gym? Are you saying handicap people shouldn't work out? There is alot they can do that do not work out legs. And if you've ever had knee problems, there are specific exercises with machines to help strengthen muscles to lessen the problem that do not stress the joints like walking or jogging would. For a handicap person gym access is really even more important because they rely more on upper body strength and because they may not be as active (from lack of walking) to burn enough calories to offset eating in the way a non-handicap person would. What's ironic are non-handicap people at the gym fighting for the closest spots so they can go in and run 10 miles on a treadmill!

Like Formula said you can not know where a handicap person will want or need to go , nor what limits they have. I used to get a giggle out of handicap parking at the selfserve salavage yards and skating rinks. Who would decide which businesses would be exempted from having special parking for the disabled. Handicap parking isn't just for those that have trouble walking long distances.

Used ot work at a Big 3 auto plant, everyone had a handicap of somekind and the placard to go with it.

Funny how the lady that uses a cane in the plant was able to RUN to her car on Friday with her paycheck. Had the plant medical person come to the gates with me one Friday and put an end to that situation.

I'm sorry to hear about your wife. Sorry if this offends you, but having grown up with friends who are really seriously permanently physically disabled my view is centered around people actually in wheelchairs (one is paraplegic and another is quadriplegic) I have frequently driven around with them and been unable to find parking due to this very issue.

The worst are those with placards that take the Van accessible spots that only people in wheelchairs should be taking (they really can't park anywhere else; the lifts in their vehicles preclude that).

IMHO disabled spots should be for only those in wheelchairs or with very serious mobility disabilities. Those are pretty visible and pretty easy to spot if you watch people for a few moments, most of the time it involves wheelchairs or other orthopedic equipment. If you are able to walk even with pain that is a far better spot than someone confined to a wheelchair who has very significant trouble navigating even with help.

There is certainly different levels of disability but when people who are nearly completely physically disabled can't get parking in handicapped spots (who they were originally designed for) then maybe its time to raise the bar back up.

Hi folks! First post here. This thread caught my attention and wanted to chime in. Thank you to all those who have inconvenienced these offenders. I have a couple stories.

I was at a local store parked at the closest accessible spot at the end of the row, as I reached down to open my door when a guy in a RAV4 came real close to sideswiping my truck and stopped in the loading zone in front of me. I got out and told him that I almost opened my door when he drove in, "oh, sorry". He was stopping there to pick up his wife and baby. As we started heading towards the store, another lady came up and parked about 8 inches from the side of my truck, half in the loading zone, and half in the driving lane. I continued in and my wife told the lady that she can't park there, she looked at her and said "What are you? the cops??" (my uncle's brother in law is the chief of police) We continued toward the store, my wife opened the door so I could get my walker in a little easier, as I'm headed towards the door, the same lady barges by me and goes though the door. She went to the head of the line, cutting in front of about 5 people, the clerk at the store told her to wait in line. She did but was very unhappy about it. My wife spoke to the store personnel and the cops were called, unfortunately, she had already left. I would love to see her again as I am now mostly in a power chair, I might have a controller malfunction and drive over her $400 shoes. My uncle, a retired cop, told me that if she was parked illegally in a loading zone, and I happened to slip and the butt end of my cane were to, say, go through her side window, she would have to make a choice. She could suck it up and pay for the window herself, or, call the cops, pay the fine and then pay for her window.

Just read some of the other posts. As far as HC spots at the gym go, I have called many times in the past 3 weeks because when I go to work out, there is someone illegally parked in the space AND in the loading zone. I have a rear mounted chair lift so I don't need the extra space for a side lift, but I do need to open my door up all the way to get into my truck. I also need the space so my chair can come up close to the driver's door. I have our local non emergency police number stored in my phone. I used to park in regular spots before I had my chair, the only time I really used it was when I was at work, I did ATM repair. I still feel awkward calling the PD as often as I do to deal with these people. I'm just worried that the PD is going to stop coming. I doubt that they would stop, it's $250 every time I find one, but still, I don't want to become the guy that caused a criminal to get away because I was calling about a parking issue when the bank was being robbed.

My father-in-law was confronted for parking in a handicapped space, because he didn't look disabled, so he took off his prosthetic leg. Needless to say the person apologized profusely.

I think about friends who have lost limbs in combat and refuse to use the spots

This is one of my biggest peeves- Last august i pull into wall mart and noticed two harleys, each one parked in the yellow hash zone between the two handicapped spots, sure enough one guys comes out about 6' 3" about 250lbs all inked up and as he gets on his bike I ask him " Are you serious???" "What??" he replies "Thats a handicapped spot, are you handicapped or just stupid?" His lack of reply led me to believe the latter. I then tell him" hey I'm just looking out for you and that sweet bike, because is someone with a side loading wheelchair car pulled up next to you they would have no choice but to open up on you bike probably knocking it over, and then when you called the cops you would have to pay another $200 fine for parking there." hopefully he thinks next time- and I'm glad I didn't have to bloody his fists all up with my face to get my point across

I love stories like this, good for you.

Many people complain that our parking lots at GM have too many handicap spaces (and technically they're right....there are 35 handicap spaces for our building and maybe 8 of them are ever in use) but I think it's kind of stupid to complain about having to walk the extra distance...when you CAN walk the extra distance. I have to think the 8 people who park in those spots would LOVE to have our problem.

My father has this happen to him all the time even with the disabled thing hanging in the mirror. He is younger so alot of people just assume he is ok. He always wears jeans so you can't see it and he walks perfect. You can't tell. He has a fake leg. He lost it on a bike at 18. He also has had a heart attack and has heart issues now. People approach him all the time just because they can't see what is wrong with him. Not saying you did anything wrong. I have watched him to the same thing to people and feel horrible about it. Sometimes you just don't know what has happened to people.

I have the same experience a lot. I am young, and appear healthy. But I have a 4' scar with a intrathecal pain pump implant in my gut with a scar on my spine where the tube runs to. I suffer from chronic pain/chronic pancreatitis. I was scheduled to attend run to the coast but had to cancel the day of due to pain. I was looking forward to running with everyone and meeting everyone. Its day by day for me, some days are hell others I feel great. But driving the camaro always makes me feel better. At track events I feel fantastic while driving because of all the adrenaline and endorphins but feel horrible in between sessions. Its a double edged sword. My camaro is a rare sight on the street these days, let alone the track. I have a hard time attending family events and bbqs. For now my car is covered until I can get back on my feet. Enough poor me nonsense. :nopity:

I did manage to go for a drive in July. I went up Latigo canyon. Amazing drive.

At one point I wasn't able to drive up that road without making multiple point turns. No power steering made it next to impossible. These days its a wonderful drive.

I work with a woman that uses her mother's tag to park in handicapped spots. I give her **** about it all the time but since my company doesn't seem to care there isn't much I can do.

Once our office moves in a few months I am hoping I have some more leverage to make her stop since there are several disabled people who work in that building and parking is limited.

Yeah, I'm gonna agree with you, if someone's diagnosed with cancer, and given three weeks to life, every second is important for them, I have no problem walking from the very end of the parking lot (I know quite a few people recently diagnosed, actually). In fact, I park at the very back at Walmart every time even if the parking lot is empty. Never understood the 'need to park close and will spend 3 hours to get that spot' mentality.

Not that it has anything to do with disabled parking, but the mentality that they will wait forever to find that close spot. I went to a heavy commuter campus college (Cal poly Pomona). Every morning, there were 5 or 6 cars sitting in the aisles trying to get a 'good spot'. Every morning I drove through the road between the close lot, and the adjacent lot. I always found a spot immediately and walked past all those same people sitting there. God we live in a lazy society.
