42844Full Floating Axle Conversion

PROBLEM: Traditional flanged-axles employ a single axle-bearing and together they support the weight of the vehicle. When cornering the flanged-axle is levered by lateral forces. Axle deflection, “bowing” or “bending” occurs as lateral forces rise with cornering speeds.

AFFECTS: “Knock Back” results when the axle flange and the brake rotor to which it is attached deflect causing the rotor to “knock” the pad “back” displacing brake fluid in the caliper piston(s). The driver must then “pump the pedal” to move fluid back into the caliper and re-establish a firm brake pedal.
• This axle deflection also alters the lateral grip unpredictably resulting in reduced cornering speeds, uneven tire temperatures and wear.
• The affect on single axle-bearings (even tapered units) found on traditional flanged axles is dramatically decreased bearing life. As bearing wear increases so do knock back and handling concerns.

42846

APPLICATIONS AFFECTED:
Live axle rear ends, Ford 9”, Dana, 10 or 12-bolt, others

CONCEPT: Eliminate conventional flanged single bearing axle and thus eliminate deflection at the axle flange.
Employ durable floating axle technology mandatory in many forms of racing and the accepted standard required for heavy-duty truck applications. Do so while packaging this technology for ease of adaptation and serviceability for ultra high performance cars used both on the track and the street.

GOAL: Eliminate axle deflection to minimize knock back, improve handling and increase bearing life.

IMPLEMENTATION:
• The axle must become a drive mechanism only, no longer directly supporting vehicle weight or absorbing cornering loads.
• The existing flange on the end of the axle tube (or housing) is decapitated and a precision steel spindle is jigged to ensure accuracy in its location before being welded in its place.
• NOTE: With Baer’s TRACKER Floating Conversion the billet parking brake backing plate, Banksia 1-piece park shoe and actuation hardware would be assembled onto the spindle next.
• The hub is assembled employing two massive bearings spaced for maximum load capacity.
• ARP 1/2-20 studs are installed (5 on 4.5”, 4.75” or 5” bolt circles).
• The rotor plate (on TRACKERs this is also the hat for the park shoe) is then fixed to the hub and in turn to the appropriate rotor from 12” to 15” diameter from .400” to 1.25” thick.
• The complete rotational assembly now slides in place on the steel spindle, a 2.00” locknut and retainer secure the assembly to the spindle.
• The flanged axle drive plate made of 4130 chrome moly is then bolted to the hub.
• Last the double spline axles (31 or 35, not included) are then slid into place and the axle cap is bolted to the spindle.

Spoke to Baer last week, apparently they've been shipping these since the beginning of the year. Hoping to get some feedback from anyone using them.

Hoping to get some feedback from anyone using them.only pre production units to certain people from what I have been told. I have 2 kits on order and one of the very first in line. Rick said about another 2 weeks, waiting on the last parts to go to plating.

I've been curious about this set up myself. Frank, if you see this - Do you have any plans with incorporating this set up in one of your builds, if not, do you want to? May go this route with mine since I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on my rear end. I'll give you a call in the coming weeks to discuss.

....pre production units always concern me a little.....

BAERS new floater kit is nice from specs given........but I have recently purchased a kit that seems far stronger in comparison. Dont get me wrong...I think this is a great street kit, but for the serious racer this is not the strongest on the market. :poke:

I'm interested as well. I'm waiting on Baer so Moser can build my rear end. It's already been over 2 months, and nothing...I'm interested, as my patience are wearing thin. :(

What kit did you get? Details?

Sorry for delay, I just spoke with the manufacturer of this product today. As I already knew from speaking with them upon purchase of mine, that the release date to the public would be Friday :secret:July 1st. I was lucky enough to receive my "Floater Rear" prior to the official release date (lots of begging). The manufacturer has asked me to not give details as they will be giving these themselves July 1st here on PT.com! What I can tell you is that this Floater setup is a complete custom piece designed specifically for the serious PT/Autocross enthusiest. I was told that the shelves will be more than stocked and ready for shipment (as to not duplicate Baer's situation). Gotta respect that! Based on what I have seen.....I would wait until July 1st to make a decision on a floater kit.

Wow, you've got me beat. I can't wait this long on parts anymore. At this rate, my car will never be completed. It's too bad, because it looked promising. I'll give it until July 1st. If I don't hear something by then, I'm done. What's another 6 weeks right?

Believe me, I would like to brag to all about my new purchase, but out of respect/request by this manufacturer........I have a gag order issued as part of a condition of reciving one of these beautiful FLOATER rearends! It makes sense....look at the comments that are surfacing towards Baer who released info and even took deposits a little premature........:ssst:

GMR was working on their system for the last year... He went silent last year with no further updates... I got tired of waiting and went with Moser's Circle Track system. We did some modifying to make it work with a Street application. :twothumbs

It's interesting that once another company comes out with the full floater set up, Baer finally starts delivering their long awaited/promised product, literally within the week. Perhaps it's a coincidence, perhaps not....Either way, it's aggravating for those of us that have been waiting sooo long.

Ok, I'm off my soap box. Good luck with your rear. Hope it works well, and please post pics. As for me, my 4+ month wait is over, I'm going with GMR. I'll post pics asap, as I know everyone wants to see some good eye candy! :)

Just a thought on this subject. Someone on the el camino forums was asking about installing a 5th gen camaro rear in a 5th gen g-body. Seeing the cost of converting a rear to full floater makes the idea of retro fitting a later model IRS rear just a little more appealing, particularly for someone with just a crappy stock rear. The late GTO units are probably closest to a workable as is size for most retrofits.

For someone with the Welding and fabrication skills, I’m sure it would be more cost effective. Since I have a Quadra link car, it sure would be a pain to cut it all out. The would probably be $10k for someone like me to have it done. For my comparison the parts and labor would likely amount to $15k over the $250 in labor to have floater ends welded on my housing. An Art Morrison set up is $13k just for the parts, labor and incidentals and I see upwards of $20k said and done. I think I would buy a new camaro before going down that road.

Yea, didn't really direct that thought towards you vehicle, but for someone like me nursing a toughened up 7.5" gm rear with drum brakes behind a stick shift LS, the thought of the possibility of retro fitting a used factory IRS capable of handling what I'll likely put it through as it comes sounds worth looking in to.

A portion of holding off on something like a Ferd 9 rear is the brakes. I got knockback issues on my old daily driver sprinter company van & double braking sucks.
Prices of Heidts & other aftermarket IRS are out of the question for average folk.
Now that 5th gen camaros & 2000's gto's are getting older it could cost less than a good 9" rear, suspension upgrades , & the high cost of floater upgrade if the how too became more common knowledge.
Was hoping someone that knows more than me on the subject may jump in here.

By the way, sorry to hear you can't weld or fab, I couldn't have had a half decent teenage childhood without getting a start making schtufff.
