View Full Version : Opinions please - what wheel to put on this Shelby Cobra?

The last set of wheels I bought was a set of Boss 338's for my Chevelle. I quite like them, but it shows my complete lack of imagination when choosing wheels...

I've just bought an early replica Cobra, and it can fit MASSIVE wheels & tire package. It will fit up to 10" rim width in the front and 12" in the rear.

As you can tell at the moment, the car has a set of Cragar Gliddens, which obviously aren't period correct. Rather than just fitting a set of Halibrand style wheels, I'd love to hear what else you think would look good.

Rim diameter 15 to 18"

We can do a set Bonspeed Wheels and have the centers colored in a magnesium look for a retro compliment for the Cobra.

Thanks for the opinions. Those Schott Modsports look fabulous, but $1585 per rim for 18x12 is just too much...

I really love the NewGen Lite, which has got me thinking. At less than $400 for a 17x11 in any offset, I'm also interested in looking further at the similar Vintage Wheel Works V48. I'm going to do some searches to see people's opinions on VWW quality and availability.

Thanks,

Craig

If you go to www.superformance.com and look at the MKIII-R they run an 18" American racing similar to the vintage look...just a little updated.

I think the lite wheel would look bitchin on that car, in the right finish it would really set it off. We also have some new NewGen stuff about to debut that I think you'll like ;)

IMHO, the vintage look has been played out on Cobras... I really dig the vintage look, but with Cobras, every one you see has one of about 4 different vintage style wheels.

To me, a Cobra needs wheels that have a serious "road race" look to them.

I'd go with CCW Classic wheels like these, but with black or gold anodized centers...

An update - I knew the car could take a large rim in the rear, but I obviously had no idea how big!

Just because they were sitting around, I fitted the Boss wheels for a laugh. These are:
18x8 with 245/40/18 and
20x10 with 315/35/20

There is over 3" clearance to the frame rail on the inside, and the rim can go out another 1.5" at least to the rear guard. If I keep the diameter to 28.5", I will be able to fit a 14" wide rim without a problem!!!

The plan - now that I know what can fit - is to look at an 18x10 front and 18x13" rear with 345/35/18 drag radials. At 27.5" tall, it should be just right.

Anyway, here's what the Cobra looks like with the 18/20 combination. I thought it would look terrible, but the rear rims followed the shape of the rear guard a lot better than I expected.
