Looking at going with Lizard Skin as opposed to the cheaper mat I was going to use. I am doing a 74 Firebird. How much is needed? 2 gallons or more? Are people spraying doors and headliners? Should I go with a thermal insulator too? Which do you lay down first? I did a search because I remember a similar thread, but I couldn't find it. I am also open to a discussion of lizard skin vs. second skin. It looks like second skin is a supporter here.

i cant comment on the second skin however i have used to lizard skin. We have spray the sound control formula on the inside of our 1969 Ford Galaxy to get the fuel pump to be less audible in the car. I do not have the car back together to verify it helped but i can say that we did the whole inside of that trunk with a little over a gallon and it is sprayed pretty thick put two coats on the floor. There is a difference in the sound of the trunk floor so i think it will more than help. I will be using it on the mustang as the sound deadener sprayed on the entire floor, roof, and ever other little space i can get it. From what i have read the sound control goes down first i think not 100%

All the instructions are printed on their website. MKelcey is the only member that I recall having a full lizard skin installation. I'd PM him and ask him to chime in on this thread.

2 gallons should get you 2 coats of full floor and trunk area, and some thinner coats up inside the doors and quarters.
I would be a 2 gallon pail of SD and see how that suits you. But you'll probably want thicker coverage than that in larger spanned areas of the floors and doors.
We use it a good bit especially for big stereo installs. Works great. And much less of a mess when drilling and cutting holes through it in the hot humid weather we get here in NC.
I've never used second skin for comparison.

Used about 1/2 a 5 gallon pail to cover the entire undercarriage of my car. Thinking of using a mix of second skin and lizard skin for the interior floors.

The Second Skin is cheaper, but not by much. I have just heard more about Lizard Skin. Thoughts on the thermal liner? If I am being honest, I can't think that this car will make more than 4-5 hour trips at the most. On the other hand, even though I am watching my pennies, I don't want to re-do things down the road because I skimped out on something that I could easily take care of now while the car is stripped and I don't have to worry about spraying in a finished car.

I used about 5 gallons of Lizzard skin on my Nova. I sprayed it on every interior panel, floors, firewall, under the dash, roof, trunk, insides of the quarters, doors, and fenders. You can also block it down with 80 grit then spray on a polyester high build primer and block it smooth. I did that on the insides of my fenders and some exposed areas in the trunk. Check out the link below for some build pictures after coating. I like it so far. It seals up everything covering all of the seams, pinch welds, etc, keeping out the water.

Can anybody recommend a cheap gun that I could buy to spray this stuff? Is it just a gun with a larger orifice? For as little as I plan on doing, I was going to pick up a gun off of ebay.

You are probably best off going with the one they sell. $80
That way you know it'll work with the material in question.

I bought their gun and sprayed my underside of the car. Just make sure you clear the gun frequently and it works fine.

I sprayed Lizard skin on a 70 mustang both sides of floor pan, roof, trunk, doors and insides of front fenders with around 6 gal. the gun worked well, I have also used it to spray bed liners, so i think it was worth the money. Car is still not running so I don't yet know how well it works.

as said before all the info is on the site, things to remember are you spray with different pressures with each of the two types, It best to spray many light coats as opposed to real heavy ones, I have done two 32 fords, my 69 camaro, and we just sprayed the roof of our old 70's suburban. We use both the CI and sound control, We spray everything the roof, doors, firewall, trunk... In my camaro I really like the way it left the trunk the same texture as the factory splatter paint, then all I had to do was a light coat to give it the color.
As far as performance, my camaro is to loud to really tell, and we dont have the suburban running, one of the 32 five windows, we did is the quietest car that many of us have ridden in. Some cars like our fendered hot rods we spray in on the inside of the fenders so rock wont star the paint on the nice side. I did my F250 with dynamat and did not really tell any difference... I think that all these products only do so much and that they are all about the same. I like lizard skin because it wont fall off and it will get in all the small cracks and and also seals, and also you can use it as I said before as a protective coating...
