My Android phone (Samsung Vibrant) is my newest obsession. I have already hacked the operating system and am going to overclock the 1Gig processor. The best site for Android information is this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php it is a website run by Android Operating System developers. At the top of the Homepage, type in your Manufacturer and Model number and go to the sections that deal with your phone. Do a search for app's, skins, themes.

Being that it is an Android phone just tap on the Market icon and to start with, go through the FREE apps that look interesting. I you don't like them delete them from the phone and try another.

Which one? I have the original Motorola "Droid" with the slideout keyboad and love it. They're good stock, by most every means, but rooting just opens up a whole new realm of possiblities. I've found that the two apps that get used the most on my phone are discreet apps, LauncherPro and SwitchPro. Both have made the phone much quicker to use. I am currently running BuglessBeast Froyo V0.5, mostly because it truely is bugless. Cyanogenmod has always worked well also. Cyanogen works on the greatest number of phones, so you're most likely to get a version of it first, he also seems to do the most updates. Call Blocker Gold also works well, though it has gotten a bit over-complicated over the last few updates.

Can't wait to upgrade to a Droid. Likely going with the Droid 2. I have an older BB now and I want to be able to jump on and check the boards here when I get a free moment. Takes forever with my BB.

I upgraded from a windows mobile HTC device to the Droid 2 about a month ago. I love the thing, but it does annoy me at times because I was so used to WinMo.

Games:
Angry bird is a dangerously addictive game (Free)
Pacific Wings is a top down plane game similar to 1942 (Free)
Chess Free is a good free chess game
Brick Breaker is another addictive game (.99 or 1.99, but worth it)

News: (Free)
AP Mobile
WikiMobile
Bloomberg
Fox news

Other cool stuff:
PANDORA---GET THIS MUSIC APP!!!! You put in your favorite artist and create a channel. The channel streams music similar to and including the artist you set up. You can create multiple artist stations, and the only commercial interruption comes after every 30 songs and it lasts a whopping 15 seconds.
There are some limits-something like 30 hours a month, then you pay .99 to finish the month. You can get it ad free by paying 36.00 a year.

Goggle Goggles
barcode scanner
aDyno
Compass Pro
aFlashlight
Advanced Task Killer-will clear your background apps and make it run smoother.
And the coolest of them all? The United States Constitution-has the obvious and other great historical documents as well.

Anyone else got some cool ones? Post away-I'm always on the lookout.

With 2.2 and above you really don't need a task killer anymore. 2.1 and 2.0.1 REALLY did.

I have the original Moto Droid and have rooted it and installed Cyanogen Mod ROM (now on RC4). I've also installed a different kernel and overclocked it. SetCPU is a good app that allows you to control the processor speed. I just have mine slightly overclocked, but have it peg the processor down to 300MHz when the screen is off. It has helped my battery life a lot.

I have a good friend that is a serious Techie and keeps me up on the latest and greatest. I have to say that it is a much better phone after all of his suggested changes.

They say that the Android OS will surpass iOS4 very soon (don't get me wrong the iOS4 is what my sister has, funny she always ask if she can play with my Vibrant hmmm....) any way on to the apps:

Root explorer.......if you tweak your phone as much as I do you need it to move files around

Shazam................What is the name of this song? Just fire up the app and let it work its magic Song/artist/and album name

**Swift Key**..........Awesome app practically finishes the word for you as you type a lot faster than the built in android keyboard as well

***TiKL**...................Want to call your cousin in NYC and don't want to use your minutes? If they have an android phone you can talk using the push to talk feature for free it uses the cellular network and it doesn't matter if they are on Verizon, AT&T, Tmo, or Sprint if it is android it will work!

Toss it Pro.....Another cool time waster game that is addicting

PacMan.........Need I say more

I actually don't like Handcent, I can't even place why, but the stock is just clean and easy for me to read, so anything else seems like it's just taking up space, but I haven't played with it since I first got my phone and was on stock 2.0.1, so I may give it a whirl again soon.

I agree the stock SMS/MMS app is very clean but on the vibrant if the text was longer than 160 characters than the stock app would make me go an extra step by seeing the rest of the text, plus I like how you can customize Handcent now as well.

Thanks Alot! I haven't been able to stop playing AngryBird since I downloaded it yesterday after reading this. Now my wife has run off with the kids, the bank foreclosed on my house and my dog won't even look at me. By the way Droid X for the win.

Everyone has listed most of the popular apps. I went from the Motorola Droid to the Motorola Droid 2 and gave the wife the Droid 1. One cool thing that we use is Grocery iQ. I can add my groceries to the list and send them to her phone. Also if you have Fios tv service, download the dvr and remote control apps. Its pretty neat to control the tv with your phone and makes setting up recordings pretty easy.

Proud owner of an HTC Droid. I love this thing. No need for turn-by-turn navigator, just bring up Google Maps app and the phone locates where you are precisely. From there you just use the map to get to your destination. I don't have many apps for it yet, pretty much just use it for Internet, texting, and of course phone calls.

I will buy HTC again, very happy with the build and quality.

Heads up. Walmart has the Droid X for 149 and you get a 100 dollar Walmart gift card. I am probably going to pick one up. I haven't seen any black Friday deals better than this. This offer ends at midnight TONIGHT though, not tomorrow, it is ending before black friday.
