I've been looking into widening my soft 8's from 9" to 10"... i know that most tire manu. suggest 10.5" min (except bfg drag radial - 10")..
I know the best thing to do is go 11", but when (quoted from a local guy) I'm looking at $75 an inch on each side to get the right offset ($150 per wheel).... multiply that by 4- i'm looking at $600 bucks before tires, which defeats the whole budget wheel thing.... I can justify $300 if i can run a 315 on a 10" .... but not $600 (yes, i'm going to try and fit 315's on all four corners)

Just wanted to know if anyone has done 315's on a 10" rim and if they had any problems... or if you think i should keep the 9" wheel and just run 275/40/17's on all four corners...

Thanks in advance,

-Sean

I run and have run a 315 on a 10" wheel for some time. It fits just fine. However, for the price you're telling me, i'd say stick with 275's on all four or if you really wanna widen them up, go for the 10" wheel and put some 295/35/17's on all four(if you think you may have tire/body interference)

I say it depends on what your goals and timeframe are. Are you going to stick with these wheels for a long time? Are they just a place saver until you can pick/afford your dream wheels? Are you gonna use the soft 8's as a track wheel when you do get your dream wheels? Etc. If they are a place keeper to get you rolling, then I would stick with what you have. 275's are pretty wide and will fill out the wheel well sufficiently well on your Malibu. Sure 315's are cool, but if you are going to be upgrading sooner than later, it may not make sense (although it would be cool to have 315's on some soft 8's)

Hello!

315's on a 10" wide wheel will have more of bulged sidewall. When you mount this tire it will almost bead itself due to the wheel technically being to narrow thus when we mount we are pushing down on the tire more to get it to mount. Does this make sense?

a 315 tyre is said to have a 12.40" section width. If put on a 10" (10" x 17") wheel can you say how wide the section is likely to be?

How can that be? (that is, smaller than what is expected on a wider wheel!). How does one work that out or is it based on experience etc?

Thanks.

Ok it depends on the tire mfg. My nitto 315/35 drag radials fit on my 9.5 rims. They measure about 11.25 across. Now if you were to try a bfg or some goodyears then they might bulge a little. You loose footprint by doing this but its still more tire. Go to an autocross and check out what some of those guys are running. I saw quite a bit of tires that should have been on a wider rim. Also not all tires are created equal if you put 6 different 315/35 next to each other they will all be different. But after all this a wider rim is always better which is the route I'm going next.

I was looking into this last spring. I was all set to install Nitto 315/35R17 on my 17x10s but I didn't have enough time to make sure I had clearance, so I pussed out and bought 275/40 R17. I had to hit the road the next day.
Nittos run a bit small and Sumis run smaller still. Many have installed them on 10s. I even found some threads with mustang guys squeezing 315s on 17x9 wheels!

There is a red 67 Chevelle we did on our site with 315s on 10" rims

A 31535R17 is spec'd on a 11" wheel at 12.30" so when you decrease width of a wheel your are essentially sucking the sidewalls in thus creating a bulge and losing some section width. A few years back we figured that for every 1/2" increase or decrease in wheel width equates to .25 increase or decrease in tire section respectively.

FYI! When a wheel manufactuer states 10" wide that would be inside bead to inside bead. If you measure outside to outside you will gain approx 1" and this in the past has confused people on determining fitments on tight fitting wheel wells.
