View Full Version : Which ride for PT 2011?

I'm trying to get ready for the upcoming Power Tour. I travel a lot for work so I don't have a lot of time to work on my cars but I cant decide which one is a better choice so I'm asking for opinions.

1) 66' Mustang - Needs engine refresh and overdrive trans. I would want to redo complete under hood at same time. Has ICE COLD A/C and a killer stereo. Great looks IMO and gets tons of attention. I just don't know how well it would do driving across country in summer heat.

2) 97' S-10 - Needs wheels BAD!!! and some interior work. Has some beat up body panels but nothing too bad. A/C needs repaired but can be done cheaply. I actually enjoy working on this truck since everything is super easy to do. It won't get much if any attention but I would drive it anywhere in a heartbeat.

I'd take the Mustang. It must still get around 14 mpg anyways doesn't it? Plus if you don't open the hood you could leave the engine compartment the way it is (if you don't have time to get to it). The most important thing is that you make it some how or other.

come on....... you gotta take the stang for sure!!! s10's don't belong at the power tour mustangs do. and like ^fordsbyjay said just get it to the point where you can trust it even though the engine might not be to pretty , but as long as u get there and have fun is all that matters.-Dom

Dude hit car-parts.com, get a running 302/351-AOD and swap it in for tour, then take time and rebuild your original engine at your leisure.

Well get this, I have a complete kit to swap in an AOD but my headers wont work, plus I don't want another automatic.

just swap in some lower highway gears on the cheap and make sure the engine wont die on you.

First and probably the only vote for the S10. :)

If everybody took their daily drivers, how interesting would HRPT be?

Didnt you just drive the Mustang over from Atlanta or somewhere in the heat? How did it do? Find yourself a t-5 and be done with it.

You need the mustang just as a conversation starter.
I’ve been on HRPT in an S10 Extreme with nice Boyds wheels and I’ve been on HRPT in a few different musclecars.

Drive a musclecar and people come up to you and start conversations about all types of things: The one they had; the really fast one some other guy in high school had; the one they currently have parked across the parking lot; the one they are working on at home; the one they are gonna get. Also you’ll get all kinds of questions: how you did something; where you got a certain part, etc.

Drive that S10 on HRPT and you’ll get tired of S10 stories in one day.

Mustang! for sure, more space to stretch out in, has a trunk for extra stuff, and a great stereo for the drive.
If you have concerns over possible heat issues, get a new aluminum radiator, and dress up the under hood a little if you want.
Get out and enjoy the drive.

I honestly wouldn't be caught dead in the S-10 on Power Tour. Not trying to bash your truck, but I just don't think it belongs on the trip.

Maybe if it had a decent set of rims, tires, cool paint, and a killer stance AND you didn't have the Mustang, then I could see it

But come on..... you Stang even has A/C?

I trailered it from coastal GA. Y'all gotta understand that I'm SUPER picky about this car. It already has 2.80's in it and an aluminum rad. The under hood isn't that bad but I basically want a show car you know? I'm in the process of piecing a T5 swap together so that should come together be fore too long. Everyone seems to be favoring the Mustang, I didn't know there were so many Mustang fans on this board!!!

I'm actually a Chevy guy and hate most Mustangs, but what's right is right.

Believe me when I say that no matter what you do to your Mustang, there are going to be cars out there that make it look like your S-10 compared to your Mustang. Not trying to insult your car, because it has a nice look, but that is just the truth. Don't forget, it's called Power Tour... not Power Show. It's all about the driving and meeting tons of cool people. A chip in the paint or dirty engine compartment isn't going to matter.

It has 2.80's in it and you're worried about an overdrive? Really?
My guess is you are a younger guy who didn't grow up with cars like this when they were new. That's not a knock, it's just that those of us that did, know that cruising a 3.0 geared car with no overdrive was a normal part of life and it worked just fine.
With a 2.8 gear and 6" tire at 75 you are cruising at 2714 RPM, which is no big deal! We have just gotten used to 1700 RPM cruising RPM with new cars.
I wouldn't be caught dead on something like power tour in that S-10 (or my Ranger for that matter) JMO

Well, it has 2.80's and a 2500 stall..... weak excuses I know. I'm 25 btw and yes have grown up MAINLY with overdrive cars although my dads Camaro had a TH350 and 3.42's for as long as I remember. After cruising at 80+ in a late model Z28 at 1800 kind of spoils you. I should just quit being a puss huh? Y'all are quickly whittling away at my "need to do" list!!

Yeah take the 'stang

I just sold a set of wheels to a brand new classic (69 Vert) 'stang owner.

He took it from here to winnipeg and back (3000miles round trip), without even giving it an inspection. When I bolted the wheels on to it, for him, I noted that the general state of the car's drive train, looked a little the worse for wear (car itself looked not bad).

So if he can do it, I guess we all can ;)
Pack a little essentials kit, and take her for a run!

Well, found a couple wrecked 5.0's for under $1K. I hope one is worth it. I may just put a roller 302 in it!!

I havent completely crossed it off my list for next year but my calendar is filling up fast. So many events and so little time. Do we know which venue will be hosting the RideTech Autocross next year?

Mustang it is way cooler than the S-10. S-10s are a dime a dozen.
