So as the title says the battery light is on, but when I measure the voltage at the battery it is about 14.5 volts. What else could be wrong?

what charging system do you have and did you bypass the stock regulator? stock harness?

The car is an 84 Cadillac. So most likely its internally regulated set-up. The cars bone stock.

If you check it most likely is either the 12 v feed from the harness to the light or the internal regulator may have gone bad.
Now also dont forget to double check for 12v key on small wire of the alternator plug.
A big issue some older GMs had were issues with the 12v feed to turn the alternator on. The alternator will keep charging if the regulator has internally shorted or bypassed.
See the light has 12v coming from regulator key on wire, and also has 12v coming from key on power to the alt light. if one or the other are lost, then the light warns of possible charging system failure.
