View Full Version : Rich Evans...am I crazy?

I just got back from SEMA and I don't get the fascination with this guy. His "designs" are ridiculous. Is it just me? For those of you not familiar with his build style, allow me to ruin your day:

He debuted this car at the 2007 SEMA show. This was the first time I had ever heard of Rich Evans.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

He just debuted this Challenger at the Mopar booth at this years SEMA. Any of these body mods look familiar? Lmao.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

He also has an "exclusive" line of steering wheels with Grant.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

He also has a "signature" series of tools by VIM tools and Sears sells a tool box "designed" by him.

Call me a hater or whatever, but I just don't get the love for this guy and his style.

I usually try to find the good in things. For instance, if I see a car that is not my style, but somebody put a lot of wrench time into it, then I can at least respect the commitment, but there is no redeeming value to anything about either of those cars.

I have personally met Rich and have seen some of his paintwork and it is of the best quality. This mustang is way over the top for my own taste but I am sure someone is buying it. He has built his company by doing quality paintwork and restoration and building one off customs for people. he definitely does some outrageous stuff but he has also won many awards for beautiful paint jobs. You cant please everyone and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The mustang does look like its out of some crazy movie and again I would not drive it but someone loves it:hmm:

rich is actually my old neighbor and he has done some work for me. i need to take my truck back since the clear is now coming off. i have no doubt its a cheap clear he used when doing insurance work. his custom jobs are friggin nice and better materials would last. check out his trucks and youll see what i mean. i dont think i could afford one of his custom jobs now. none of that stuff is my style though. the work is nice, the image is not.

BTW I think this the same guy that got busted in a insurance scam in June?

it is, but you need to know the whole story. something about a DA and a re election the next week?????? that sounds familiar.

At leat the Vette in 'Corvette Summer" wasn't just a bunch of bolt-ons

I was noticing that the ad said it was limited to 1000 kits... 1000 kits?????? Hmmmm..........

Just not my type of thing, but maybe young kids would opt for his bolt on stuff?

If the mods don't make a car better/faster/stronger, or even more aerodynamic, I'll probably hate them. The mods I like are based on performance and commonly mimic something on the race track. Style-wise, mods should enhance the original design and complement the car's lines and shape.

Based on my criteria, this guy's stuff is a failure of epic proportions.

That being said, he'll probably be rich, famous, and legendary...but I'll never like it.

Call me when he wins OUSCI. I'll take another look at that time.

Did he change the shop name from the original Huntington Beach Bodyworks?

On the way to SEMA Monday He, or at least his crew, almost caused a big wreck. Just before Stateline they had a caravan with the truck and enclosed trailer leading, a BUTT Ugly Mustang following and then a couple more cars. Without warning or signals they abruptly slowed and pulled to the side of the highway. The car in front of me swerved and I almost hit him. Then they pulled back onto the highway and started going again. Don't know what it was all about but the only thing I could think of was, well at least if I hit that Mustang with my truck, no one else will have to suffer permanent eye damage looking at it ....

Maybe a little harsh (I really don't care for his style, no biggie) but I was really pissed about their lack of concern for others while driving

Ya Dave, that's him. In fact, the frame of the car he never finished was at SEMA. They had it tilted on it's side to show off the skulls...

That Mustang was like a welding flash burn. He was there, never cracked a smile.

Reminds me of mad max cars.....Guy seems like he likes himself a bit too much.....He was in one of the latest mags in every picture he is either flexing or "look at me I am a bad@#@" look....

On a side note....It take a lot of hours and work to make a mustang look that bad.....

Those is some sweet scoops!! Really flow with the lines on the mustang!!

And the challenger......does it have 17's on the front and 15's on the back?!?!! Looks goofy around the rear wheel openings.......among other places!

Just to put everything in perspective, I head just as many negative comments about pro touring at SEMA as I did about cars like this. A large portion of the general public and automotive aftermarket HATE big wheeled big braked muscle cars. They'd be happy if we all had Cragers. To each their own, everyone has different tastes and different styles.

Back on topic, it does look like death race 2000 mustang doesnt it?

I followed and listened to as many car comments as I could during my 5 days at SEMA. The Pro Touring cars that I consider the real deal, you know the ones that are actually driven and used in events like OUSCI, that have reasonable sized wheels, garnered positive comments.
The over done cars that look like Hot Wheels to me, the ones with 20's and bigger and no suspension travel were the ones that I heard being laughed at. To me those aren't really Pro Touring cars at all, not really sure what to call them - maybe just real life Hot Wheels

i think we all like the clean look but rich has a lot of cool stuff, all the stuff he builds is so over the top that it never flows into the car only his parts stand out not the car as a hole.

If by the fact that some Pep Boys stores carry them somehow makes them a Pep Boys "Brand", then so is Edelbrock, Holley, Hooker Headers, Accell, MSD, Eibach, Bilstien, Ford Racing, B&M, Auto Metere, Comp Cams etc.

How much time and money does it require to ruin a Mustang or Challenger? You can't even argue that beauty is in the eye of the beholder when someone is fleecing the public pushing garbage like this. Anyone who likes it is just flat wrong. His complete lack of style and design sense has boggled my mind for years and his Challenger on the turntable in Mopar's booth made me wonder who the hell at Chrysler is picking their SEMA vehicles. His 15 seconds must almost be over, right?

I had never seen Spectre products anywhere else besides pepboys before they become a forum sponsor in all honesty. Perhaps pepboys was a launching platforum.

Our Pep Boys (Orange, CA) has had the above mentioned products for YEARS! And they have now opened a section called "Pep Boys Speed Shop" within the store. They were working on it just before SEMA, so I haven't been back in to see it yet.

As for Spectre, Summit has carried the product for a while, first place I saw it. Along with their Semi at Good-Guys
