Hello everyone
Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Jamie Walters. I have been building a rather interesting car car about 2 years now. The car is a 1967 vw Karmann Ghia with a Gen 3 viper V10 and 6speed. yes, I know it's not your typical muslce car. But that is the point. I love fast cars and I am not really a purist about any car. I look at them a blank sheet of paper waiting to be draw.
Thats how the Ghia got started.
In the last 2 years I have been very blessed to have gathered some 50 sponsors that have put over $100,000 in parts and service in the car. It has gathered interest all over the world...to my suprise, and even been in a few magazines (un finished) like hotrod and Performace VW in the U.K.
If you puch in V10 Ghia or Viper Ghia in a search engine you might find some build pics. \
Dean Laurent is one of the mad scientist working on this car. He is an extrorinadry Fabricator and it was easy to relay my vision to him.
The car are you may expect is a ground up build. There really isnt allot of the original Ghia left save the body. Every peice of the car was hand made or CNC'd right in Deans shop.
I had the chance to work with one of our sponsors to develop a product that will be going into the ghia and also be released for sale to the aftermarket. The unit is a touch screen that takes the place of all the toggles in a pipical custom build...and does SO much more. I will post about this unit if I can find the proper forum.
Thats the basics. Thanks for reading.

To be honest, no I am really a hot rod/ custom guy. Love little cars with big motors. Thanks for checking it out. I have tried to post pics but I think my threads were to big and it logged me off before I had time to post.

O.K lets try this again. Here are some pics for you guys to check out on the car.
This is how it all started. It looks rough, but the car was very very solid and had never seen damage.

After we got it to the shop we fastened it to the chassis table and started some serious cutting so we could fit the wheel and engine in place.
This set the stage for the build and really put a fire in us.

As thing progressed we started to mock up the front chassis and suspension.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
All the suspension components were desgined and CNC'd in house at Deanz Rodz in IL.
Here soe, shots of the front ansuspesnion and Rear IRS lower arms and Carriers, as well of the center section being machined.
There A-arms and carriers are machined from Fortal aluminum and the rear carrier was machiend form a huge peice (350lbs)
of forged aluminum.

Beacause we needed as much room as possible it was nessasry to move some of the engine components. To do this we had to make a new thermostate hosing and a new powersteering resovior. Here are a few pics.

The Chassis was also a very big challenge do the fact that the viper engine's oil pan was flat on the bottom. Because there was no kick up as you might find in a typical Small block or big bigblock it was difficult to find a solution for a cross member. We ened up moving it just forward of the engine. The chassie is fabricated form 2x4 tube.

The interior of the car is truly small. But we managed to get enough room to fit Deanz 6.2 frame in there and be fairly comforatble. Being that I am only 5.7 the car should be fine for just about any average person.
As you can see in the pic the tine has been cut, the new made dash is in and the trans tunnle is made.
In one of the pics you can see the unique bell crank pedal system dean desgined so we could mount all the power brake items and hydralic clutch setup under the dash. This was done to keep the engine bay clean and un cluttered.

The headers for this ride are custom as you can see in the pics above. On a build like this you usually have to take the car to a header shop and leave it with them while they mock them up etc.. But our header and exhaust sponsor has a truly uniqe and exciting way to make this process easier. They send you a mock up kit that you assyemble the way YOU want it and then send the mock up back to them for fab. This means you can design you own header in your shop. Your imagination is the limit. Check out the pics.

The Rear of the car is were the 1600cc engine use to be. There was allot of thinking need to fit everyhting in that little space. But it came together nicly. Here you can see the rear frame section and the shot of the finished tin work and under the rear were the body waas boxed in for strength.

Last week Kyron plating in OH. sent us back the first lot of item they are going for the Ghia. They turned out awsome, it's no wonder they are one of the best in the country. The chrome and purple really make a cool contrast and should add some pop to the engine bay.
Every item you see here was custom fabricated.

I think the one of the best things to come from this build is some very cool product development. The product is electronic in nature and is something everyone in the forum would likley be interested in,....however in oder to follow the regulations on the forum I will not post anything about the product unitl I can gain access to the "New products" page and do so there. I will link post a link here once I do.
Thanks for looking and reading this whole rant. Hope you enjoyed it. More to come soon.

Very very cool build! A good friend of mine has a Ghia. Other than paint, it's stock. He's had it since we were in HS. I'm sure he'd love to trade that 3hp or so (OK, kidding a little - it makes slightly more than 3hp) for your finished product!

Thanks for the comments. Yes I think the stock VW made maybe 50hp and had a 1600cc engine. Now it makes 650 hp and has a 8300cc engine.

I used to build vw,s back in the early 90,s i would be happy with 100hp in a bug and they wouldnt last long . Your car is amazing nice work . I am with ismael if you need a test pilot let me know .

This V10 Bug was this guy's 5th V8/V10 Bug project. He built it with a "Pro Street" style suspension and tires sizes... Therefore, I don't think he'd be taking any corners very fast but I'm sure it's a pretty good thrill in a straight line!! :drive1:

So, after talking with the moderators I have been given the o.k to post some info about the product I had mentioned eailer in the thread.
Being that I am a product representitve as of last week, i wanted to be sure I didnt cross any forum rules. Since this product has been designed for use in the Ghia, this info is relevent to the build, and all the work that has went into it. So here we go.
The unit we developed is a touch screen interface that takes the place of all your typlical toggles and switches. But, it's far more than that.
Besides switching things like, fuel pumps, fans, lights, door locks, windows, truck release etc...The unit offers some really unit features, that people who build custom cars will love. Some of these features were only available to OEM manufactures....until now.
Below you will see the opening screen for the ghia. This pic can also be used as a background as well. We placed a rough rendering just for mockup. The user will be able to have a pic of there vehical installed before shipping.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Another feature of the unit is that it offers a standard security system, that is far better than anything out there. The unit has a security screen that appears after the opening screen. It will cue the driver to enter his/her pin or code (customer chosen). Until the code is entered nothing the screen controls will be able to be activated. Fuel pumps, lights, ignition etc.... once activated this screen will also appear when suffing the internet or accsessing GPS functions etc.. This feature can also be disabled if you wish at the time of order.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Here is a pic of a couple of differnet switch panles we mocked up for the Ghia. As you can see the layout allows for a clean and easily visable
point of interface for all your vehical fuctions.
Each unit's graphics, back ground, switch shapes, colors, function and lay out are dictated by the customer upon order. The unit can also be set up to display in a vertical position to allow install in between the seats in narrow consoles. We will work with you each step of the way and send pics of the screen layouts, so you can change or tweek whatever you want before the unit is every shipped. That means that every unit is unique to the customer, it's your unit. This is why we called it MiMOD (My Modifications)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Things like back dorund graphics and color can be changed from the screen itself. And if you would like button added, removed, changed or a screen added, there is no charge to have it done. Just call up customer service and start the desgin process, o.k the upgarde or change once you have seen it via e-mail; and they send out a new program that will interface with the unit. Done. No ther unit on the planet offers this degree of customizing.
The unit is also capable of displaying just about any sensor. For eg... Air ride suspension pressure, ride height, or outside air temp..ect. We are also working on the innerface for a TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) That will alow you to check tire pressures from the screen, tire temps and give alarms for low air or hi temp.
The unit will be OBDII capable in the very near furure. Allowing you to monitor every possible engine perameter as well as clear bad codes as needed.
Yet another feature we are currently testing, is a WIfi upgrade that will allow you to down load all information to a home copmuter, cell phone or lap top for anaylisis, before, after or during a race.
Aside from this the unit will also be GPS, and back up camera compatiable. And we also offer a split screen option that allows you to display basic gauges such as speedo, tach, Iol pressure, fuel level, vots..etc... in a second panle located behind the steering wheel, while leveing all the other features and touch interfacing to the first unit loctated in the dash or console.
We have some other very cool features in the works, but I think you get the idea.
The units come in 3 basic setups.
Stage 1- for switching and basic monitoring (back up camera and GPS)
Stage 2 unit for- switching, included OBDII upgrade and wifi
Stage 3- Switching, OBDII, Wifi and split screen extrem package.
The basic unit cane be upgraded as need to any stage, as needed.
So tell me what you guys think about this. Any changes? any added features you would like to see? Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the comment, Not to sure about SEMA, just got off a call regarding that, and nothing was set in stone.
As for inputs. the unit will come with everything you need to plug and play. The wiring is very easy since it is a centralized deal. It was desigined to be user friendly in every way.

Hey Will,
I have been waiting for two years to see what ISIS was going to produce for a Touch Screen application... They kept saying it was coming but they have never came out with anything yet. I'm starting to think about my interior on my project now and ready to order my ISIS setup so I emailed Jay at ISIS the other day to inquire one more time about what they had coming for a Touch Screen. He replied back to me and told me they were debuting two different Touch Screens at SEMA this year! I had already inquired with Jamie about the interface of this Mimod Touch Screen with the ISIS system and they said no problem...
I'll see what ISIS has to offer with their setup but it will have to be something REALLY nice to top this product in my opinion...
I am planning on running a bunch of Analog gauges and have all switches and such be handled by this MiMod Touch Screen... I will also have a "backup" camera mode which will be used as a way of recording what I'm leaving behind on the track... also a playback mode for my race videos... also a stereo setup for my Ipod and Iphone... also a GPS Navigation setup.
VERY COOL PRODUCT!!! :1st:

kj, definitely keep me posted. I want the touch screen in a bad way and to meld these two together would be the stuff I think.
Thanks for the update Ray. Keep us posted on the SEMA comings from ISIS. You are right though, it will have to be tops to beat out MiMod. I'm definitely going one of these directions and so far MiMod is on my big list. Especially once ISIS is good to go with it.

ok, this could go many different ways. so the only "thinking" part of the system would need to be the integration of the ecu info. other than that, the other screens mearly work with touch screen signals for on and off correct?
now lets say a guy wanted to have a user definable touchscreen dash readout that could run diagnostics. then, a side panel for controlling lights, hazards, and other on/off type switching. then, another mounted between the seats for windows, locks, seat heaters and other creature comfort type switching. how would your window switching work? could it be made like a normal momentary window switch? will relays be part of the system with kind of a motherboard to wire directly from?
i really like this idea. have seen car pc's that can do your obd2 readouts and gauges, but, it would be nice to run separate systems so you don't tie up all your functions in one screen. like running live ecu info, then have to stop to roll down a window or turn your lights on.
any more info on this on a webpage somewhere?

ok, this could go many different ways. so the only "thinking" part of the system would need to be the integration of the ecu info. other than that, the other screens mearly work with touch screen signals for on and off correct?
now lets say a guy wanted to have a user definable touchscreen dash readout that could run diagnostics. then, a side panel for controlling lights, hazards, and other on/off type switching. then, another mounted between the seats for windows, locks, seat heaters and other creature comfort type switching. how would your window switching work? could it be made like a normal momentary window switch? will relays be part of the system with kind of a motherboard to wire directly from?
i really like this idea. have seen car pc's that can do your obd2 readouts and gauges, but, it would be nice to run separate systems so you don't tie up all your functions in one screen. like running live ecu info, then have to stop to roll down a window or turn your lights on.
any more info on this on a webpage somewhere?
Gottcha, as stated we do have a split screen version of this unit that has already been tested. However we oppted to keep all the touch functions in the first unit loctaed on the dash or console and the other just to display the basic speed tach, fule pressue, fuel level..etc... No point in reaching through or around a steering wheel. That said I have not really thought of multipul touch screens in the vehical. Basically becuase the point was to have less clutter and a central control interface. However I cant see why we couldnt do it if you wanted it done. Just remember each screen you order is extra. The only real limiting factor would the the current screen size limitations. However becasue we can display vertically if needed, that also is not that big an issue.
The current screen interface is VERY VERY easy to use. Going from one screen to the other, or diplaying multipal screens is possible. With 1.6 GHz single (or dual) Intel Atom processor , Windows 7 OS and 2Gig of Ram the unit is fast and efficient.
As for the window switching. All buttons can be customized. So you can have them as ON/OFF, ON/ON/OFF, Monentary, etc....So the windows would work just like a normal window, Hold it until it's down, and then let go.
Another few features (upgrade options) I forgot to mention: Climate control and display compatiable as well as HD /Satellilte Radio, entertainment pack (mp3 video) options as well.
Hope I answered your question. Thanks for the post.

This is really intriguing. Found the website and did some tooling around. I'd love to see more information about how it works within the electrical system, how it actually powers everything, etc. I think the website said something about a 12" screen for gauges, is this a 12" square panel or is it 6"x12", what kind of sizing exactly? I like the idea of blacking out the dash with no switches, knobs, buttons, etc. Can this operate winshield wipers with a delay? I'm really looking forward to seeing more of this as it unfolds. Really want to see it all setup in the Ghia too!

Hi
That 12" screen is 12 diagonal. But you can run a smaller one if you want. We have screen options. You most likley found the site directed to the EV market. The specs are nearly the same but the HP version (hi performance) has some differnt software since there is mo need to monitor a huge battery bank.
As for the wipers, yes it can run wiper, hi/low, delay etc.. and washer fluid as well. Just about anything you can imagine. The unit is very versitle.

I forgot to mention a few features so I thought I would add them like this.
The unit can also run HD or Sat raido, and we also offer a enternatinment pack that will play MP3 and Videos as well. These are option upgrades when you order.
Besides that it can also opperate climate control . Thanks

Thanks for the updates and the PM Jamie. I was looking at the MiMod EV site. Keep us posted on developments. I like what is here already and really want to see more. Also looking forward to seeing how this integrates with ISIS.
Also, do you have any pics of what the screens look like when monitoring air pressure and ride height? Does the system work with the internal ride height sensors already built into the Shockwaves for example, or does it need an external sensor? This thing is great!!!

Hey,
We are currenlty working on the air suspsnsion side of things. Our focus is on being able to adjust the air suspension as well as monitor all 4 corners. Not sure when we will have that ready, but it's in the works.
One thing to note is that if a person wanted to buy a unit to utilize all the current programs, they can always upgrade the programing later to deal with the air ride, Radio, video, wifi etc... or whatever new developments we come up with. We made this unit easily expandable. Our goal is to do it all, in one unit.
Hope that helps.:)

Hello everyone
I have had a few questions about relays. The MiModHP uses the standard relays found in a vehical wiring system. So if you have a new wiring ahrness like EZ-Wiring for eg, then your set.
We are also working on complete unit that would include a full vehical wiring harness system integrated for those who are build from the gorund up. Thanks again for all the support and kind comments on the build and this product.

if you guys set up premade relay banks correlating with the amount of channels, it would make install alot easier. how many channels out is possible?

Thank you. We are very pleased on how well the product has developed. As for the price, I think we will be able to put it well within reach of many. Epecially if they buy the base modle and upgrade as they have funds to do so. This unit is far more veritile than anything on the market. Thanks again for the comments and feedback.

Though you might like a few pics of the Ghia at the body shop. I snapped them today while I was there. Dennis is a master at what He does and the back of the Ghia is looking great. The Trucnk Gap is perfect and the rear of the car should be in primer by mid week. As with any project like this some people dont realize the amount of work involved into getting a car stright enough and all the gaps perfect, it's no easy task. I will say this, I am glad Dennis is onboard the project. More to come soon.

Nice project! Curious what your suspensino goals are with it?
We as far as the suspension goes, most of it was fabricated in house as you may alread know. Dean is a master class machinist and R&D guy. We wanted something that looked cool, but also could stand up to a pounding. The fact we are doing such an extreme car/engine combo also meant using "off the shelf" product was out of the question.
My gaol was to have a car that could handle and drive well and look like a HotWheels creation.
so the choice to go with and unequal A-arm set up in the front was a no brainer.
As for the rear...well thats another story. The current IRS rear ends on the market are limited to Approx 600HP and 500 FTLBS, that wouldn't do it for the 650+ 600+ combo we had. So that meant designing a cmplelty new rear end capable of exceeding our goals. So, Dean Laurent (crazy scientist he is) did just that. He came up with a IRS that can comfortably handle 850HP and over 900 Ftlbs with internals we are going to use.
In the end we will have the benifit of full independant suspension and the peace of mind it will take the abuse. If I was making the car for show, it wouldnt matter, but I am a driver and you can bet that when this car fianally hit the road, she's going to be put through her paces.
Thanks

I have been getting great feedback on the new MiModHP touch interface and I would like to thank everyone for their support.
One qestion we have been asked a few times is if MiMod HP will be compatiable with ISIS power. Well, for those of you interested, we are currently working with ISIS to do just that. Once ISIS saw waht the MiMoD HP was capable of, they were eager to work with us. And we are pleased be working with them to offer you what you asked for.
When you put these 2 systems together we will be able to offer you the most powerful automotive system on the planet.

While the ghia was on the lift at Specialtiy body and paint in mendota I took the oppertunity to sanp a few shots of the chassis. Sorry they pics are a little blurry. Becasue the car is so low you want see much of this once it's done. I am going with a silver vein powder coat on the chassis and cage. Should look sick.

Thanks for making me realiize how bad I suck.
The car and MiMod stuff is killer. I am impressed how capable this setup is- I only wonder if it can support EFI tuning functions on the fly as well? How about data acquisition?
Being able to fine-tune a custom EFI setup and then click over to the latest Avenged Sevenfold video, and then review on-track performance data/video from OUSCI would be pretty awesome.

Honestly if this setup is a netbook per se plus extras I could almost guarantee you it could handle stuff with MegaTune for Megasquirt. and surely could accommodate other tuning programs as it would simply need a USB output for most systems.
So will it have or can it accommodate a USB port? I assume it should be able to or has one.

Well, I can tell you we have something in the works that will make many tuners jump for joy.
We are working with a compnay to have a tuning option. It will be a piggy back system that will interface with anyone using a OEM EFI computer. It will be compatiable with any manufactured OEM system.
This system will allow a person to do things retard or advance timing, turn up boost etc...
All the suff you "really" need to play and tune right. You will be able to accsess this from your seat at any time, no more laptops and crazy programs.
If you start playing with thngs and really mess the tune up, we can even send a tune directly to your MiMod HP and fix it for you.
Couple this, with the rest of the performace and tuning apps like our Accelormeter app, TPMS (tire pressure temp and pressure), Air ride display and control, OBDII and the WIFI options and you have the best tuning interface you could ask for. And you can download in to a lap top or cpmputer in real time or stream in to a pit crew if you want. Yep, we got you covered.
