Well, I just got the bill / fine for my speeding ticket (81 in a 65). I have not gotten a speeding ticket in years (by luck mostly, I suppose) but this one is gonna cost me $395 plus the cost of traffic school to keep it off my record......WOW!
Needless to say, I will be more tuned in from now on, lol

It's no longer about obeying the limits as much as it is revenue.

the lawyer will make money, the court will make money, you will be out and not be able to take traffic school to keep it off your record. Lesson learned, do not speed, it's not worth it

Was it a HiPo I assume? what city/county? I always contest my tickets by trial by written declaration and I have won 5 out of 6 (yes, you read that correctly). It's free to do so, and at the very least, it usually delays the cost of the ticket by a few months the one time I lost. They refund your "bail" when they dismiss. It's worth the effort.

It was in Santa Clara County on 680 Milpitas / San Jose border. Its a known speed trap but I just slipped up. The chance of getting out it are pretty slim I would assume since the state is in such bad shape, they need all the revenue they can get.

$195?? ... $395??? ... $430???? ..... BAH... Back in July, I got the brunt of Illinois' new Construction Zone penalties....try $605!!!! $375 minimum fine for ANY violation whatsoever, speeding, illegal lane change, doesn't matter what ....... plus the cherry on top of $230 in court costs. I won't go into details but I tried to argue my way out of it ("Officer, I was going with the flow of traffic") that was a waste of time.
That one stung for a long time. Not to minimize you 3 guys that also got bit, but I'm just showing you a worse scenario!! $605 would have bought some nice Camaro parts for me.

Many many years ago when I was much younger and dumber I had finished doing an engine swap and after doing the break in went for a run around the block in the industrial park. Long story short I did a burnout, launched, ran nearly a full quarter pass, shut down and stopped to pull into our shop yard. The cop pulled out of the driveway of the shop across the street and being an ass wrote me four wonderful tickets for stunting (5 points and $405), Racing (5 points and $475), Excessive speed (6 points and $750) and Undo care and attention (5 points and $450). In Alberta we only have 15 points before you lose your license. Thankfully the cop did not fill in the date and my name correctly and I was able to get out of the tiockets in court, but I should have lost my license in that one stop. Worst part was it was a friday night and it was 3am. Shouldnt he have had better things to do??

I'm not really sure they can get away with the racing ticket if you were the only car on the road

You guys got nothin'. In Ontario we have a "street racing" fine. $2000 and your car gets impounded. Thing is, the people getting busted aren't actually racing. The first one to get busted was a garbage truck. Yup, a garbage truck. Here's the story.
Ontario's new anti-street racing laws were enforced for the first time when a garbage truck was clocked doing about 70mph in a 40 mph zone. The Record reports that the Great Lakes Waste Management truck would be impounded for seven days, and the driver's license suspended for a week– on top of a $2,000 fine for street-racing. The citation has caused the Ontario police to expand its investigations into alleged street racing beyond the initial targets ("young men in cars," surprise, surprise). Their undue diligence now includes commercial vehicles. "The more we apply this new legislation, we're seeing this problem is across the board," says Ontario Police constable Joanna Van Mierlo. That, or garbage truck drivers are far more dedicated to time efficiency than previously thought. Talk about going like stink!
An old lady down my street got her "whip" snatched on the way out of town last year. Like many places we have a limit and an unofficial limit . The police often drive over this but I stay under it.
One day when I was about 30 over (hefty fine) I saw a constable pull over to do a U-turn and then get caught with a bunch of traffic going both ways. I went to run him and burried my foot looking for a side road when from the back seat I heard "slow down Daddy!" I hadn't even thought about it or where I was putting others. I've rethought a bunch of things since that day.

Same thing in Oz, anti-hoon laws. $ thousands in fines, cars get impounded for 1 month, loss of license. Here's the rub, "hooning" is almost discretionary. Speeding, burnouts, dounuts etc. I've seen a guy get done under these laws when he took off in a family truckster wagon from a hill start and the rear tyre did the tiniest barely audible "chirp" copper behind did him for Hoon driving. It is all about revenue
Oh by the way, DIY in Oz, less than $1000 fine, keep your car and only if you are like three times over do you lose your license, otherwise you are good to go when you sober up....
More people are killed from drunk drivers than hoon drivers, but most drunk drivers are "older" people (ie not 18-30 yr olds). I've done a heap of analysis on statistics and you'd be suprised by the ratio of deaths to age, 18-30 is roughly the same as 30-45, male and female similar...so the argument of "young blokes in fast cars" doesn't wash with me....
Education, not regulation....
But we aren't politicians are we...

Common misconception. you can in fact still take traffic school if you fight a ticket and fail.
