View Full Version : Why are people "ageists" against old cars?

I found this kind of annoying and wanted to share it. right now i live in some of the nicer apartments in my town.(but moving in a few weeks, thank imagination) Anyhow, because i have a roommate i have to park my plymouth duster out in the open parking spaces and i park my daily driver truck next to it so i don't have to worry about the baffoons hitting my car.

My truck has been sitting for about 3 weeks. It has some spider webs on the bumper, is covered in dust and just doesnt get used often.(i have a work car). My duster is just dusty because i live on the outskirts of town and cars get covered in the span of a week. I drove the duster last week.

Well my roommate ran into the property manager this morning and she threatened to tow my duster because she thinks its a broken down car. It has a clean paint job, and from a 5-10ft distance it looks like a fully restored car.

The same reason that people won't hire older folk...they think they are has been's that can't do the job....

New and shiny = better

Just sucks....

Our older cars rock

When the property manager goes on vacation, have his car towed. :ssst:
If there isn't anything in the contract saying vehicles must be driven every other day tell em to go pound sand.:here!:

Had the same problem living in some town homes, old man from up north told me he was going to have my 68 towed, I basically threatened him with his life, no more problems!

This did happen when I was younger in the late 80's,

print up something to put in the window that tell's on looker's that this is a running driving car that has a current tags & insurance and the car is not to be towed until you are contacted first.Put your name, cell phone number, and apartment #,some the dumb as# tow truck driver might call you first.Call the building owner not the building manager and talk to them.

Sit down and ensure her the vehicle runs and drives (drive it to her office). Remind her that it is legally insured and tagged. Let her know that it's not a daily driver so it may appear to not move for periods of time, and that you park it in the same spot perhaps giving the appearance that it has not moved. Bring up the point that you are a good tenant who pays your rent on time.

If she persists in threatening, then you might want to bring up that the burden of proof (and you could drive the vehicle to court) would lie with her, and she could be held personally liable for improper towing not only for towing/tow yard costs, but possible vehicle damage and inconvience as well.

When I told my landlord I had my '66, he wrote up in the contract that "vintage car must remain in garage". I always park it in the garage regardless but the fact that I was basically told it can't sit outside at all peeved me. I guess he believes it is some broken down POS that gives spiders a new home. Too bad my 97 S10 is a piece of junk compared to the Mustang. Ohh well.

I would make a formal complaint to the manager's boss about what is going on. Sometimes the quickest way is up and around.

I've lived in a few appartments that seem to have this attitude that thier cheap complex is like some sort of gated comunity where everyone drives nice cars and lives the same lifestyle. Well, its an appartment not an expensive condo. I was frequently in trouble for fixing my car in the parking lot, or having and unregistered vehicle on occasion. Not that I was in the right, but its how I could afford to live at the time. Anyway I've gone off on a tangent, but for them to almost tow a registered classic in good condition is absurd, and they should be made very aware of that.

well yes, and i am moving out in under a month, but its still annoying. especially when my neighbor drives a beat up geo metro that barely runs. Its such a pos that he doesnt ever roll up the windows. knowing that no one wants it.

when i lived in an apartment, the owner of the building (in his 70's at least) was pretty cool about it and would come out and shoot the breeze with me when i was laying under it changing the oil or trans fluid in whatever old POS i had at the time. he thought my V8 powered 76 Vega wagon was pretty cool...
he even stood in the entryway and told me how crazy i was when i put the Flowmaster exhaust kit in my Nova when it was 40 degrees and raining and then told me how nice it sounded when i finally got it together and started it up..

my fellow apartment dwellers were less than enthusiastic about the junk i had in the parking lot- up to 4 cars at one point in time- but i was there before and lived there after most of them and would alwaysh elp them dig their pretty late model cars out of the snowbank or give them a jumpstart when they needed it...
