I just registered for this car. Poopy how is your car doing? Is the project still alive?
It is alive, sort of. It is currently sitting in my shop with the motor removed while I finish off the engine bay and get it painted. I just had an aluminum flywheel made for the new motor, so once painted it will all go in and get rewired and tuned with a new ECU. Then I will start picking away at the body work, I didn't have it on the road last summer and that was a let down for me. So this spring I hope to have it back together. ;)
Thanks for registering!

I do have a couple of questions:
- Is it also possible to use an LS400 instead of the SC400? The wheelbase is slightly different (LS400: 2,814 mm (110.8 in) and the SC400: 105.9 in (2,690 mm)) And also the width is larger (LS400: 1,821–1,829 mm (71.7–72.0 in) and the SC400: 70.5 in (1,791 mm)) And afaik the engines aren't that different. I thought the SC400 has a dry-sump and the LS400 doesn't?
- How did you fix the shortening the drivetrain? Cause it is a RWD right? :)
- Why did you make a custom petrol tank? Did you have to remove the original one because you had to shorten the whole car? Or because regulations with track cars? In other words, can the original tank be used as well?
- Are the original seats of the SC400 useable in the volvo?
- Where are the chassis numbers of both cars located? This because I would like to have it roadlegal (in the Netherlands)
- Is it possible to get the wheels more inside the car by using other ET-values rims (I dont know if this is called the same way in English). When you use rims with the center placed more to the outside of the wheel so it will be placed further inside the car. Maybe with some re-welding of the inner fenders (I have no idea how to call this, I hope it is clear what I mean)
I actually have a lot more questions because I love the project. But I'll keep it with these for now ;)

I would not use the LS400 just because of the width, the SC400 was hard enough to make fit. They use totally different suspensions, the SC is the same platform as the last generation Supra, so there is actually a bit of aftermarket for it.
- How did you fix the shortening the drivetrain? Cause it is a RWD right? :)
Yes RWD, and I just had the stock driveshaft shortened to match the amount I shortened the SC400 chassis.
- Why did you make a custom petrol tank? Did you have to remove the original one because you had to shorten the whole car? Or because regulations with track cars? In other words, can the original tank be used as well?
The SC400 tank sits high up behind the rear seats, not a great place for center of gravity, as well, I wanted an SCCA approved fuel cell, but otherwise the stock tank might have fit, if it cleared the Volvo package tray area. I didn't try it, so I am not 100% sure.
- Where are the chassis numbers of both cars located? This because I would like to have it roadlegal (in the Netherlands)
The volvo has a small riveted tag under the hood, the lexus is on the door jamb and on the dash i believe. I wanted all trace of lexus gone, so it is registered as a volvo.

Yes a little bit, mine are ET35, so you could get a bit extra as long as the tire doesn't start contacting the suspension, or frame when turning.
Hope that helps!
One thing I would do different next time: Unbolt the front and rear suspensions from the lexus and just build a new frame, and put in all new sheet metal. Trying to join curvy lexus sheet metal to straight volvo bits was a tremendously frustrating task. It would have been faster to start from scratch with all flat steel.

Got some paint on the engine finally. My first attempt at ppg envirobase, it was pretty damn easy to work with. Came out a bit more blue than I was hoping for, but it really changes with the light. ;)
Do you have any more info on the paint color? Really like the looks of it.
Thanks

Sorry guys, this thing keeps getting delayed. I feel much guilt!
Paint color is Audi Nimbus Grey. ;)

No guilt. I understand the limits of time and funds. Absolutely awesome build. True hot rod spirit poopy!
Would love to see it on the road beating up tossers in Porsches or Ferraris. Update when you can as I am sure I am not alone in following this.

This engine seems to have 2 upper cooling hose outlets. It seems the Lexus uses an odd downflow radiator with two upper inlet, one of which goes straight into the upper tank, the other through an expansion tank first.
Any insight why Toyota would design this thing with the two outlets (it seems quite odd to me)?
What are you plans for cooling this beast?

I'm not sure what they had in mind, probably some intake warming emission type crap, the race truck this motor came out of had them all tied together with braided hoses. I already have a mishimoto radiator with dual fans and shroud that I ran with the original motor. It worked quite well. ;)

Just read the whole thread, awesome build. The new wheels look great too. Really suit the look. Keep up the great work.

Great car in general... but I really dig the "hidden" tube bumper idea. New wheels look great too. Somthing in the darker simpler wheels that looks more sinister...

Really awesome project! Just read through the whole thread and it is a good bit of inspiration! It appears that while you are very good at the panel work you dont seem to enjoy it much,(just from some comments you've made) it is something I am not looking forward to, any tips you've learnt for a newbie to the cut and shut proffesion? I was wondering if you use different wire to do panel work to other structural work? Keep up the good work your on the down hill run now and im sure im not alone in looking forward to the updates! Thanks for sharing.

If I could do it over again, I would have bought a Tig welder to start with. I just bought one a few weeks ago and it sure works great on thin steel with little to no grinding when you're done. The non stop welding, grinding, warping, hammering, shrinking, welding, grinding, warping routine got old really fast. The tig would have forced me to do a bit better fitting, and would have saved me a hundred hours of messing around making a mess. The other tool I bought after the fact is an english wheel. In reality I should have shaped and tig'd the panel roughly into shape, cut the whole 1/4 panel off strategically, english wheeled it smooth and perfect, and tig'd it back on. Maybe next time! lol
As far as the mig wire, I tried 023 and 035, and really didn't have much preference between the two.

Haha ya, but this car still has useable suspension travel, it was mostly lowered by dropping the body.
