View Full Version : Low Budget!? Use everything from LS 6sp swap car and finish around $4000?

I'm doing and LS1 6sp swap into a 64 Skylark vert. I bought a wrecked 02 SS Camaro and stripped it clean. I don't have the money that I see many spend on these swaps. Out of the 02 I'm thinking that I will use the steering column, dash gauges, complete harness, radiator, hydraulic clutch and so on. I plan on modifying my fuel tank to recieve the Camaro fuel sender and pump. I will change out to a 9" rear and keep the final drive speed the same as it was in the Camaro. I may even adapt the cruise control and AC.
As far as other parts to make is work; I will have the oilpan modified to fit around the cross member, an after market motor mount kit, a shorthened driveshaft. A bracket will be purchased to relocate the alternator up top as it will hit the gearbox. I figure the computer will need to be reprogrammed due to no longer having the traction control and safety restraint system. Any fabrication I can do myself.
Am I missing something? I figure I can do the whole swap for around $4000 but I have not seen anyone go down this road. Interested in your thoughts.

If you have fab skills I say use the frame mounts and motor mounts from the f-body donor. It will allow you to place the engine were you want it. Wait 4me will do a mail oreder tune for 84$ I can help with the alt bracket if you need one. Good luck with your build.

i have done this swap on a '67 camaro i had and i'm doing it again on the '69 camaro i have now. its not too bad if your good at wiring, i had to add 4' of wire to one part of the harness and 2' to another part of the harness.
the column i had to make about 3-6" shorter and weld double D steering shaft into the end of the column to adapt iy to the gear box.
if you have any questions about it you can PM me if you want.

So many are making motor mount kits that it didn't seem worthwhile for me to fab up. I ordered a complete set for around $80. Trans mount I will fab. Thanks for the info on the tuning, that's cheap enough! You have an alt bracket that will bring it up top?

Man, I'm glad I'm not alone in going this route. One can research these threads for hours and sometimes still not get exactly what you're looking for. Don't get me wrong, I'ld be lost without this wealth of information but other times I can get lost in it! So you have done the swap with the column and all? Any regrets? Did you keep the original fuel pump, use the cruise and .... Is there a thread on it?

i didn't use the fuel pump. i used a fuel cell and the stock pump was broken in the crash, same with the donor car i have now.
the cruse didn't work on my '67. since the system sets ABS codes it disables cruse. so if you want cruse you will need to do alot more work. it would be easier to get an aftermarket cruse control kit and wire it to use the stock camaro switch.
no regrets on the column. it worked out very well and i kept the chip keys so i had anti-theft working on my car. doing the same on my currant car.
i don't remember if there was a thread about the column or not. there was a few during my build, i sold the car in '07 so that time or before would be when you could find them.

The cruise issue can't be programed out huh? Disappointing. Anyone else ever able to get past that issue? Want to do some far away shows and crusie keeps me out of trouble.

no its not something you can tune out. its linked to the EBCM. now if you have the EBCM wired in and you don't want ABS you could tie all 3 (if yours is a 3 channel) or 4 (if yours is 4 channel) to the speed sensor on the transmission so the EBCM thinks the speed sensors are working. now i'm not that far on my car so i can't confirm that will work for you and i plan on using ABS on my car.

Well, I obviously still have much to learn. I will not be going with ABS but have everything that was with the Camaro. I guess I will cross that bridge after the main hurtles of motor mounting and suspension are done.
More than anything, I was hoping to confirm that premise of using the column, gage package and dash harness was something that could be done.
Thanks!
